The irony of it is that I agree with you about this. When any person identifies prejudice in himself and overcomes it, it’s a thing to be celebrated. It doesn’t matter what race or religion or other group the person belongs to.

Here’s what happened in the story: she admits that 25 years ago, a farmer came to her for help. She did help him. She didn’t help him as much as she could have, partly because he was white but also because she felt he was being an arrogant racist in dealing with her. So she sent him to a white lawyer and assumed the lawyer would help him. She found out the lawyer was screwing him and helped again, ultimately saving his farm. She learns a lesson and the white family is grateful to this day. Did she do the wrong thing in discriminating? Yes. But she learned a lesson and no one was harmed. If that’s your standard for being a jerk, what would you call someone who insults other people without bothering to learn what he’s talking about?
