I’ve gotten two friend requests in two days, one from Sudan and one from Gabon. Is anyone else getting this?
Is it fishing for scam bait?
It is because I’m female and they’re looking for cybersex and/or money?
Is it because I happen to have the same name as a member of the Gabonese cabinet? (I know, random, but true–google my name and you get the gov’t of Gabon)
I’m inclined towards answer #1, but curious to know if it’s happening to anyone else.
This would be my guess. I’ve never had an experience with being added by a person from Africa, and in the few cases where people did add me accidentally, I recall being able to trace it back to name confusion.
The other options happen, too, but usually only when you are new to Facebook and don’t have many friends. They tend to think you are less world-weary then. And are more likely to think that your account is a dating type one.
Incidentally, my sister got one from a guy who claimed to be a missionary there, and was pleasantly surprised when the guy actually seemed to know something about the Bible. She wound up subscribing to one of his groups to get monthly reports on his work.
