So I can’t log into Facebook from some computers I use daily (work, phone) because I forgot the password.
But when I try to change my password from the computer I can log on with (home), Facebook needs the current password to change the password to a new one.
Does anyone know a workaround? Can I make my home PC tell me the current password? Or, get Facebook to change to new one without old one?
Probably not, maybe, you could google around to see if you can get your browser to give up it’s stored passwords. Just remember, if you can, so can anyone else with access to your computer.
Just hit the ‘forgot my password’ button.
ETA, type in your password wrong, on the next page hit “need help logging in” then on the page after that there’s a ‘reset my password’ button.
A few weeks ago I logged into Facebook at work, then realized I had forgotten my password (not needed on the home computer). So I followed the prompts to reset it - which got me a notice that Someone was trying to log in to my account and that I needed to send Facebook a photo ID to prove I was me.
My take was “who need this crap?”. Some time later I tried logging in at home with the new password. It was rejected, but then I got a new screen that said Facebook thanked me for proving I was me, and let me log in.
Moral of the story: the Facebook dingbats have multiple ways to screw with you.
I would suggest using a password app like 1Password to manage your passwords. It’s cross platform, you can use it on any smart device. It keeps an encrypted file of all of your passwords on Dropbox. I’ve used it for years.
On Chrome you can do this by going to Settings | Advanced | Passwords |Manage Passwords to get the full list of all stored passwords on that browser/computer.
However, you do need to put in your PC password again in order to access it in non-starred-out form, so it’s not quite as insecure as it at first seems.
