Facebook

I got a notice when I try to log on to facebook, saying I should make a copy of my government I.D… They say I can cover everything but my name, my picture and my date of birth.
This sounds fishy to me. Does anybody else know anything about this.
I’m not going to do it.

Do you mean they asked you to upload a copy to them/your account, or just that you ought to make a copy in general?

Going out on a limb… I’m saying horse puckey. Ignore.

There’s no reason Facebook would ask for that, so it’s surely a scam of some sort. Besides ignoring the request you might want to figure out where you were compromised, either your account or your machine.

Had a few friends have this happen to them.

Are you using a pseudonym? They really don’t like that. They are trying to verify that you are who you say you are. If your Facebook name is “Hingle McCringleberry” and that’s NOT your real name, you’re busted.

They want me to upload a copy to them.
I agree that it doesn’t sound right to me and I am using my real name.

I take it back - Facebook apparently really does this

It’s to confirm identity in cases where you may be hacked or spoofing someone.

Here is so more info.
I am on facebook and this just popped up today (12/05).I am not doing anything different.
I am not asking for anything. All I ever do is talk to other people, I don’t sell anything.
There is no way to turn this off or contact facebook to ask whats up.

I have a friend who uses a fake name on Facebook. It’s kind of a stage name that she uses when she performs. It took a few years, but they blocked her account after she was unable to prove the name she was using was her real name. So, she set up a whole new account with a new, similar fake name. I’m waiting for it to happen again.

Which is technically a felony under the Computer Abuse and Fraud Act to make a new account after your last one was banned. Legally it is considered gaining unauthorized access to a computer network/server/service

If it is, then it’s a toothless law, since banning an account is not the same thing as banning a person. The idea that Facebook was banning the person would be hard to uphold when they will let you make a new account with your real name, and be perfectly fine with it.

I think the argument that they would make is that by banning you they are in fact denying you access to their network/service/server and that by making a new account you are regaining access after it has been restricted.

I have a friend who has a name which can be interpreted as being fake (his last name includes the letters ASS), and Facebook made him prove it was his real name before he could use the account.

They used to do this to transpeople too, though I hear things have gotten better if you change to a cross-gender name.

my thoughts on this issue … if facebook states birth-name is absolutely imperative for establishing/ maintaining one’s account … i’d flip 'em the bird and walk away. definitely would not do what they are requesting of you.

I have a two friends who use a name that’s not their birth name, and not their legal name, on Facebook. Both were busted, and both made a case that they were using the name their friends called them. And eventually Facebook gave them their preferred name back. After a certain amount of hassle.

So Facebook doesn’t strictly require legal names.

I play games on FB and there are people not only with multiple accts, but sometimes dozens of accts. Not sure what triggers FB’s interest in a particular account, but there must be many many thousands of fake accts, happily playing their games with names like GAMEZ PLAYAH.

The main reason Facebook is successful while sites like Myspace aren’t, is because Facebook’s customers (the advertisers) can be sure they are advertising to real people, not wasting their money advertising to bots or throwaway accounts. I don’t agree with it, or their policy, but I’m not Facebook’s customer. I’m just the product they’re selling.

It’s been about a week and the notice is still there.
I talked to other people on facebook and nobody else ever was asked to do it.
There is no place to contact facebook to ask any questions. Why would they want my name, picture and date of birth ?
Everybody says, " don’t do it"and I’m going to follow that advice. I don’t need facebook.
Thanks for all your opinions.

This happened to me. I got into an argument over someone’s appalling spelling and grammar on a local Facebook Page and somebody reported me to Facebook for it (it was quite entertaining and totally worth it  ).
The following morning, Facebook was demanding to see my driver’s license, in order to prove that I am who I am purporting to be.
I was all ready to just ditch Facebook altogether at that point, but certain things (my daughter’s Scrapbook mainly) drew me back. So I blanked everything off my driving license except for my photo and name (which they have anyway) and sent it to them. 6 hours later I was allowed back in.
