The Centers for Disease Control is warning office workers to be suspicious of e-mails from unknown sources. Two office workers at the Federal building in Boston were sprayed with a strange white powder when they opened an e-mail advertising a discount vacation to Israel just before noon EST. The powder, of course, is suspected to be Anthrax although authorities are still conducting tests to confirm this. Antivirus software makers claim that they are powerless to do anything because Anthrax is bacterial, rather than viral in nature. Computer users that must open strange e-mails as part of their job are advised to wear dust masks and latex gloves while working at their computer
Here’s another one to laugh at, although it’s real…
Procter & Gamble are apparently in the midst of a marketing campaign where they are mailing a sample maxipad to households in Eastern Europe. Of course, all the recipients know is, they’re getting a weirdly-puffy envelope from an unexpected source. Apparently there have been lots of concerned calls over it. heh heh.
I also heard that Publishers Clearing House was mailing out laundry detergent samples. Whoops. But, on the plus side, you ALREADY may be a millionaire.
Moderator’s Notes: I agree completely. So I’ve edited the title fo this thread to reflect that. As I have others I found to be in poor taste or not particularly well thought out.
This is in rather poor taste, considering that today, my office got a suspicious letter in the interoffice mail. Per the hospital’s policy, we had to call Environmental Health and Safety AND the University police department. The courier who picked the letter up had to go in for decontamination, and the office of the recipient had to be decontaminated as well.
Please take this seriously. People have died from this, and the last thing anyone wants is to be among the victims.
I’m not so concerned that you find a need for humour right now - many of us do - as that you would intentionally mislabel a thread in order to gain attention at this time.
There are many S11 jokes and parodies around at the moment, including some which have been posted on this messageboard. Most posters have enough compassion and respect for their fellow human beings to clearly label anything which might distress those people who are having a hard time dealing with the events of the last 6 weeks.
Your post wasn’t even original. If you want to see how you can handle all that has happened in this world with both dignoty and humour, you might want to run a search on the username Fenris.
I am sorry if I offended anyone. I wrote this as an obvious spoofe rather than a hoax. Anyone that would take an e-mail carrying anthrax seriously has bigger problems that they need to address. I did not mean any disrespect at all towards those that have truly been affected by fake anthrax. I was spoofing all of the false reports that have popped up everywhere. I guess I could have been more clear in my thread title that it was a joke but I didn’t think it was necessary in this forum.
Not original? Can someone clue me in? I wrote this on a whim and it was certainly off the top of my head and not based on anything else. Is there something else going around that is similar?
