Anthrax buggering up the mail...

Not telling y’all anything you don’t already know, but the mail is taking even longer than usual to get where it’s going because of the anthrax scare. My FIL sent us a check, which we sorely need, and it just got here today. When I saw it, I immediately knew why: it was in an 8X12 envelope with news clippings and photos. Sigh…We’ll have to tell our parents not to send big envelopes for the time being.

I read this in passing on one of the news sites, and I can’t find it now because I’ve already deleted the article…but someone sent a fan letter to Jennifer Lopez, or rather, her agency. It also had powder in it, and the agency freaked. Turned out it was just talc, in a scent she supposedly likes. I’m assuming that whoever sent it did so before the anthrax scare got started; it takes talent agencies a loooong time to sort through all the mail they get for performers. But they have to, just in case someone is getting a threat. Anyway, he (she?) should have known better than to send anything but paper under any circumstances. Hope s/he doesn’t get on The List for it.

And who are the lucky people who get the job of sorting through all this crap?
“We don’t want these famous pop stars to get infected so, here…you open it.”
I’m counting my lucky stars I work for a worthless company no one cares about and have a crappy job at least one step up from the mail room.

OMG! You’ve just made me realize something! I’m on the hunt for a job right now, and I’ll have to remember to say, if anyone asks me, NO MAILROOM!

Also, C3, fan mail is always sorted by agency staff, and it’s not always drudge work. There are many instances of nude Polaroids and used panties…

Lucky I’m not keen on inflicting another “Ask the…” thread on you guys, or I’d do an “Ask the Postal Worker” one. Suffice it to say that nude polaroids and used panties are the least of it. I mean we’re talking vomit, dead rodents, and rotten meat here…

Er, sorry. Please continue your meals.

Was the guy who died a mailroom worker?

No, he was a photographer, but the guy who had a spore in his nose worked in the mail room. Also, the woman in NY who works at NBC opened a letter for Tom Brokaw, had all sorts of powder spill out, and then came up positive for anthrax.
It seems like the people who did this, apparently targeting people like Tom Brokaw, would have figured out that he doesn’t open his own mail.

that sounds much more plausible. i heard (not sure where from) that it got sent to j-lo, her agency opened it, they thought it was coke, had a snort, and they ended up getting anthrax. amusing, but not very liekly.
anyone got a cite to the REAL story?

I think it’s a Tylenol deal. A chance to try and kill someone while blaming it on those nasty terrorists.

These guys aren’t so stupid that they believe anthrax to be contagious, are they?

Whaaaat?

carnivorousplant, I was thinking the same thing.

urban_gorilla, if you’re right, that was exceptionally dumb. Didn’t he/she/they know that you don’t snort or shoot anything if you don’t know how much it was cut?

They just found another one in Nevada.

Oh, and there’s a plane being held on the tarmac in London (IIRC), because a flight attendant found a suspicious substance on board.

This is getting really weird!

Okay, on the plane in London, MSNBC just reported that a passenger who had been let off the plane said that a white, powdery substance had been found on a tissue in a first-class rest room.

I’m not going to assume anything here, but my guess is that that is probably not anthrax.

On the downside, MSNBC is also reporting five more anthrax exposures (not cases yet, just exposures) at that tabloid in Florida. Sigh.

I opened a can of talcum in the bathroom and found a strange white substance.
What should I do?

I read the story that Rilch linked to. I’m wondering just why in the hell no one is shouting this from the top of their lungs. If all the news stations would just say “HEY! Some nutball sent an infected letter to a celebrity! Don’t worry!” then maybe we could…oh, I dunno…stop worrying?

Or am I asking too much here?

This is what you have roadies for.

ROFL! I’m waiting for my husband to complain about the dust again so I can say “Don’t touch that! It might be Anthrax!!!”

So that why it’s taking so damn long for my BtVS tape to get here.

Friggin’ terrorists.

C’mon, folks, look at the bright side. As my boss said today: “The bill collectors will just have to wait. For reasons of personal health & safety, I won’t be opening any mail until further notice.”

Friend Down South posited this idea on Friday night: The most effective way to bring America down would be to infect money, so that people would be afraid to handle it. And I will leave you with that.

That wouldn’t be as bad as it seems, I think. I live practically cash-free, anyway…paycheck direct-deposited, bills paid either by direct-withdrawal or check, check card or credit card used in most situations. The only time I use cash is if I’m getting a Coke from the vending machine at work. I think we could work around tainted cash.
