Fake canopy bed effect??

My old canopy bed is about to collapse any minute, and I can’t believe how much trouble I’m having finding a new or used one to replace it. Particularly, I notice how much cheaper it would be to get another kind of bed! :stuck_out_tongue: So I’m wondering if there’s any way to create a fake canopy bed effect. I’ve seen mosquito netting suspended from the ceiling and sort of draped around the head of the bed, but that’s not what I’m looking for. It would be… I don’t even know… some kind of suspended curtain thing from the ceiling on all four sides of the bed?? Maybe hanging curtain rods? They’d have to be able to support the weight of light curtains. I’m having a hard time even picturing how this would work…

Has anyone ever seen this done? Any ideas? Does this sound like something I could do with a power drill and a studfinder???

Thanks,

Anise

Something like this, maybe?
curtain rod canopy

Martha Stewart Living featured the curtain rod canopy once upon a time, also. I don’t think that they addressed the issue of “support for the screws that hold the curtain rods up” either. If you’re going with lightweight curtains, and are careful not to tug on them, you could probably get away with it. If you want two layers of thick upholstery fabric looped and draped, though, then you’ll either want to talk to a carpenter about it or just buy another canopy bed.

If you are into the lightweight curtains, though, another option is a “fairy ring” like this. It looks like mosquito netting rather than bed curtains, though.

Looks like a hospital room.

How 'bout repairing the current one?

You can get that effect by hanging sheer fabric curtains from taut wires. The wires can be strung through eyes screwed into the ceiling. Screwing into studs would be best, but molly bolts or drywall anchors should handle the tension adequately.

Actually, I’ve seen a simple project that looks very cool, I made one for my (now ex) gf’s bed and she loved it. You make a frame out of trim molding that you would get at home depot, paint it any color you wish (it’s usually small, like 3’ wide x 1’ deep), screw it to the ceiling, and then go to any fabric store, pick out the fabric you want, and staple it to the frame. I’ll try to track down the website that showed how to do it, I think with fabric, wood, paint, and screws I spent under 50 bucks. The frame can be a simple rectangle or something more elaborate to give the “curtains” that hang down a different shape over the bed.

I can’t dig up the page, this was at least 18 months ago…it is similar to the cheap little ring canopies that you buy anywhere, but by making it into a wider and deeper shape, it allows you to stream the material down around the whole bed. PM me if you want to see pics of it, and I’ll keep looking for the webpage

Are you looking for a four-poster bed?

Thanks all… if y’all could see how cheap the original bed is, much laughter would ensue. Trust me, it can’t be repaired! Capa, I’ve never been able to figure out how to contact people on these message boards… especially after being at work for 10 hours… but yes, that does sound like a good idea. I wondered about how well the curtain rods would actually be supported by hanging from the ceiling, too. I already have the curtains, and they’re those light ones from Pier 1, but they do weigh something. A four poster isn’t really what I’m looking for, since being able to draw curtains around it is key. But these are some very good ideas.

oh you cant draw curtains around this design, it’s meant to have the fabric stapled to the frame above, and then hang down and drape off the bed at the backs, and about 3/4 the way down the sides.
