While watching “Enterprise” the other night, I had an epiphany (noclue on the spelling of that). In the future, all women have large breasts. It’s like that in all Star Trek versions. Skinny women with big ol’ titties. (Yeay, Gene!)
Now, like any normal guy, I approve of this. But, will it be genetics or enhancements that provide this bust bonanza?
While I realize that there are many women naturally large breasted, whenever I see a skinny girl who is big on top, I always wonder, real? or fake? Sometimes it’s kind of obvious, and I realize that Hollywood is very much into all types of plastic surgery…
Well, I have no real question. Just throwing this out there. Men and women, what do you all think? And if you want to bring up other body types and male actors, feel free to do so.
It’s natural selection. The casting directors for those shows naturally select actresses with bigger jigglies.
Also, corsets. Jeri Ryan, playing the large-gazumbad Seven of Nine, wore a very tight corset that took a few inches off her waist and made her funbags look bigger.
All I have to say is, by and large, the women on Star Trek aren’t all that big. I’d be very surprised if Jeri Ryan is a C-cup. The magic of most of the women who are made to look buxom on Trek is nothing more sophisticated than the push-up bra.
For an excellent example of how one of these miracle undergarments can enhance a woman’s endowments, watch closely the scene in Trading Places where Jamie Lee Curtis takes her bra off. You will see that while she has lots of showing off going on, when she is unsupported, she actually has a fairly modest B-cup chest.
There are exceptions. Most notably Nichelle Nichols, but Kirk’s thrall in “Gamesters of Triskellion” and Yvonne Craig also deserve mention. But I don’t think this is as large a phenomenon as it is beign made out to be here, you should excuse the pun.
Neat, ** RickJay ** - I din’t know that. She did always look oddly uncomfortable, though. Now I know why. It comes as a balm to my own tattered body-image.
The men are generally in good physical shape, too, though it’s not as consistant as the breasts thing; Riker was a little chunky toward the end, there and Neelix wasn’t exactly what I’d call a stud muffin…
Hmmm. Is there a double-standard, here? I can think of examples of males who aren’t sexually attractive in the traditional sense, but not females. Have there been any non-sexy Star Trek ladies?
Over 50? Lots. Plenty of matronly types (Kai Wynn and Kai Opaka, for example). Under 50? hmm… Well, that brings up one of the great double-standard left-handed compliments of STNG and beyond: they provide plenty of acting opportunities for non-sexy men and women… provided they’re willing to play aliens… i.e., in the future, only attractive people are human. Yay, Gene!
Fear not KneadToKnow, I’ll do enough looking for both of us. And not that I went out of my way to find it, but I do have a pic of Jeri that would seem to establish her C pretty conclusively. But with photoshop and the internet you can never be sure.
I heard somewhere that Gene Rodenberry had the men on the original series (maybe Next Generation, too) wear special underwear that made their, um, “areas” less obvious. Was he trying to imply something about men in the future?
I really don’t think today’s Star Trek shows have a double standard at all. Looking at TNG, I cannot see how Denise Crosby, Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden, and Diana Muldaur are any better looking than Jonathan Frakes, Patrick Stewart, Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, and Wil Wheaton. Even the bit players were hardly ever models - the most common recurring characters are Chief O’Brien, who is no model, and Guinan, who is DEFINITELY no model. Even when they did have legitimately beautiful actresses as guest stars they usually got meaty roles that went well beyond being just window dressing - Ashley Judd as Robin Lefler, f’rinstance, or Famke Janssen’s wonderful performance as the genetically chosen super-wife.
The other serieses, too… Kate Mulgrew is not a classic Hollywood beauty. Roxann Dawson and Jennifer Lien are pretty, but they aren’t supermodels by any means. I think the new Star Trek series have actually been quite reasonable in casting and portraying their female characters as people, not sex symbols. Seven of Nine was a little heavy on the sex appeal. That’s about it.
I really liked Gates McFadden. I have a thing for red heads.
But, I can’t think of too many truly “hunky” men in Star Trek. Sure, Michael Dorn (Worf) and that gladiator guy in “Bread and Circuses” (TOS). But, where are the Arnolds, Vins, or even the pretty boys like Brad Pitt? Guess I don’t have an ‘eye’ for casting men.
Thinking of Worf, why are the most convincing looking Klingons black?
KneadToKnow, Kirk’s chick in Gamesters of Triskellion made a number of porno movies in the 1970’s and she was fairly well-endowed. I could link to a sight that has proof, but if i remember correctly, that’s a SDMB no-no, right?
If you’re interested you can e-mail me & I 'll link you.
h.sapiens, Sally Kellerman’s pants were WAY too tight in Where No Man Has Gone Before and they left little or nothing to the imagination.
Well the biggest problem with the Companion was she was one of those really emotional needy chicks. And talk about Domaneering, Cochrane was never allowed to leave the planet even just to go for a drink with the boys.
She was always: “What is the man doing? Where is the man going? How is the man feeling today? How come the man is not treating me like he used to a century ago?”
Well, Patrick Stewart was voted Sexiest Man in Hollywood during the second or third season. They got The Rock for an episode of Voyager; Bill Campbell played in an episode of STNG; I know several women who thought Brent Spiner was totally hot. Then there was that whole Planet of the Scantily-Clad Jogging Blond Aerobic Instructors.
I think the problem here is that most of the people they interacted with in these serieses were aliens; for the guys, this meant giving them some coveralls to wear and putting bumps on their heads; for the gals, it means putting them in a string bikini and putting bumps on their heads. Guess which gets noticed more as far as being hotties is concerned?
