Fall/Winter Book Releases

What new books are you eagerly anticipating this fall and winter?

I’m excited about:

All Clear, by Connie Willis. Due in October. This is the second part of her WWII time-travel story that began with Blackout, which was released earlier this year.

Cryoburn, by Lois McMaster Bujold. A new Miles Vorkosigan novel! Due out October 19th, the date just got moved up.

Heartstone, by C.J. Sansom. Due possibly in January, in the U.S. This is the fifth in the Mathew Shardlake historical mystery series, which is set in Tudor England. I’m pretty tired of the Tudors, but these are really good.

Side Jobs: Stories From the Dresden Files, Jim Butcher. Due in October. This is supposed to be a collection of all the Harry Dresden short stories, plus a new one. I think I’ve read most of them in other collections, but since my son is a big fan I’ll probably get a copy of this.

The Truth of Valor, Tanya Huff. Due in September. This is the fifth in Huff’s military sci-fi series.

The Heroes, Joe Abercrombie, due in February possibly.

The Crippled God, By Steven Erikson. Due out possibly February of 2011. It’s the 10th and final volume of a truly epic fantasy series. I’m reading book 9 right now, so will have to find something to tide me over until book 10 comes out.

Wise Man’s Fear, by Patrick Rothfuss. Due out March 1, 2011, it’s the follow-up to one of the most successful fantasy debuts in a while. I devoured the first book and am looking forward to the second.

I’ve got a hold on this one at the library, as well as Mockingjay, the new one in the YA Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins.

Also, Full Dark No Stars, Stephen King’s new story collection in November.

I’ll believe it the day they ship it to me! Maybe even then, not until it actually arrives…

But I’m looking forward to it as well.

Well, he committed to the date on his blog back in April:

I heard great things about that book, so I bought a copy back in 2008. I haven’t read it yet - and I’m not sure I want to start it, even with the next book on the horizon. I think I’ll wait to see how long it takes him to write the third one.

Probably a good call! I am afraid he will go to his grave without finishing… I really *did *enjoy the first book though.

Book 13 of the Wheel of Time, Towers of Midnight is due out November 2, 2010. the last one was good and I think Sanderson did a great job. I’ve been waiting for this book since November of last year.

Fascinating thread - good to learn about the books. I rarely “anticipate” soon-to-be released books, more because I am always stumbling across a book I want to read without knowing when it was released.

There are maybe 2 - 3 authors that are on “automatic buy” for me - Haruki Murakami, David Foster Wallace before his death, and a few science/philosophy writers…

Thanks for the heads up!

Rothfuss is 37 - I don’t think we have any worries, unless he gets tangled up in his beard while sleeping and asphyxiates. It’s my understanding that he has the 3rd book drafted, and the time between books will be due to rewrites and whatnot. My guess is early 2014.

Eleanor I’ve taken similar a tact with The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant and A Song of Ice and Fire. I’ve got a couple other series queued up to read before then.

This one.

The reissue of Stories of Your Life: and Others by Ted Chiang. I’ve been wanting a copy for a long time.

After America by John Birmingham.

The High King of Montival by S.M. Stirling.

Mockingjay, Heartstone,Mike Carey’s Thicker Than Water still isn’t at my library, A Play of Piety by Margeret Frazer, and Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore (which I think isn’t coming out until April. Gah).

Well, Amazon UK has A Dance With Dragons set for a 9/29/10 release date, so there’s that.

weeps

Full Dark, No Stars, the latest collection of short works by Stephen King, is due out November 9th; for the past several years, he’s released a new book either on or the day before my birthday. I’m still trying to convince my hubby I’m not bribing King to do this!

Seconded. It has been a slow slog at times through this second series, but dammit, I want to know how it ends!

Is there a page with release dates? I can think of several books I’m looking forward, but I don’t know off the top of my head when they’ll be out.

Amazon shows the release date for a book, in the section of the page where it lists the publisher. If you add a book to your Wish List, the release date will be displayed, usually. But the dates are not always reliable, especially if the date is far out. (As Drain Bead points out, Amazon keeps hopefully posting release dates for A Dance With Dragons, The Book Which Will Never Be Finished.)

You can usually check an author’s website or blog to get the dates. I pull a bunch of author blogs into my Goodreads feed, and I just today saw Bujold’s announcement of the new date for her book.
jsgoddess, Thicker Than Water is my favorite in that series so far. I wonder why the last two books haven’t been published in the US yet? I suppose the earlier ones didn’t sell well enough.

So frustrating! I think they are quite good, if only people knew about them.
