Fallout 4: Now Playing

Go try out Elder Scrolls online and then rethink this very hard.

Luck is only 3, though I do have the first Scavenger perk. So maybe it’s low luck? Maybe I’ll see if putting a couple more points in it makes a difference.

What do you other folks who get lots of cores have in luck?

IMO luck is very important in all the FO games; we get better loot and easier kills. But if you want a hardcore difficult game put luck at 1

Funny, I didn’t put much in Luck because I was like “it’s never been that important in the Fallout games.”

But I play on whatever the default hardness is and generally get distracted by about a million things until the main story line is stupidly easy because I spent all my time trying to climb over mountains or see what’s on the bottom of that lake or clear out every house in that village or whatever.

I hit level 47 today. I was looking through my collection of weapons, and I must say most of them aren’t worth lugging around. A tricked-out assault rifle is definitely the dependable workhorse gun in this game. Legendary bonuses are nice, but not necessary. I obtained and kitted out a pile of energy weapons and some sniper weapons, most of them legendary, but when things get tense it is still the assault rifle I reach for. Earlier in game, when I was having trouble finding 5.56, I had the wrong idea about this gun.

These days I find myself carrying around 4 guns: the sniper rifle, because it has a silencer, the shotgun with a drum clip, because it kicks ass when I’m forced into close range, the laser sniper rifle, which is a better for damage and ammo but won’t take a silencer and the legendary plasma rifle tricked out for sniping with an extra 50 radiation damage. It’s too much, really, but I go out loaded like that anyway.

4 is too much? Heh, I carry a minimum of 9 weapons on me everywhere I go. I probably don’t need the 10mm or .44 pistol anymore really, or the legendary sword (but it’s cool and doesn’t weigh too much, nor do the pistols). But in addition to that I have a laser rifle (Righteous Authority from BoS), plasma rifle (2-shotter), gamma gun (which has a special knockback effect that is quite good, it’s the one you get from the Cabot House quest line), .308 sniper, shotty, 5.56 assault rifle, and a .45 full auto machine gun. All are legendary, all are fully modded, and all have times when they are the best weapon to use. And I do use all of them.

Obviously, this list doesn’t even include heavies. I kinda only bring them out for special occasions just because they are so… well, heavy, but now that I am using Strong as a companion and he can carry a solid 270 pounds (versus about 150 pounds for most companions), I might as well have him keep one of my legendary missile launchers or miniguns and a Fat Man on him for when I need/want it.

My weapons:

  • “Ghoulicide” is a tricked-out combat rifle with a .308 receiever. It’s my go-to all-purpose weapon and, as the name implies, does +50% damage to ghouls. Am considering renaming to something more clever, like “Dead Sexy.”

  • “Robocalypse” is a .50 cal sniper rifle with all the fixings. Last night I was even able to scavenge up a tracking scope to put on her. +50% to robots. Assaultrons and Sentry Bots don’t stand a chance.

  • “Fire for Effect” is a double-shot laser rifle with a scope and burning effect, though it gets very little use since Robocalpyse is so good.

  • “Close Comfort” is my double-shot combat shotgun, and does 200+ damage per shot. Since shotgun shells are fairly rare (I only have about 400 right now), she’s mostly for bosses who get too, well, close for comfort. a 32-round drum and a dose of jet is enough to take out most anything that comes within melee range. Also good when swarmed by enemies who do decent aggregate damage and need to be disposed of quickly.

  • “Deliverer” is the Railroad silenced pistol. I keep it around mostly for funsies since it’s designed for a character built much differently than me. It’s good for clearing out areas of low-level NPCs because it shoots quickly and uses ammo that wouldn’t otherwise get shot.

I recently got rid of Righteous Authority since I realized I wasn’t using it at all, and I can probably get rid of Fire for Effect as well.

The shopkeeper in the good vault (95?) has a unique combat rifle for sale. It fires two projectiles at the cost of one ammo. Trick it out with the top of the line automatic/powerful receiver and it becomes almost game-breakingly powerful even in the basic .45 caliber. I have mine done up with a suppressor, recoil reducing stock, long/vented barrel, and an optical sight. When I attack with it from stealth, I chew up even the most powerful enemies so fast they don’t even get a chance to fight back. Behemoths, power armor-users, Death Claws…they all go down in a welter of blood and gibs. Its only drawback is that it isn’t as accurate, even with the upgrades, as some of the other weapons and so is useful only to maybe medium range on human-size targets. I still prefer to use the assault rifle in lots of situations, mostly because of the much greater ammo capacity and smaller spread.

Using pre-fabs, I ended up building a huge wall-less garage to house all my suits of power armor. It got to where I had no room left in my house or yard to park them. In the grand tradition of vehicle collectors, I repair mine and customize them, but very seldom “drive” them other than to move them around the shop. At this stage, I have chests there with bits and pieces of power armor I’ve accumulated, but I don’t have enough frames to assemble them into free-standing suits. I’m still not exactly rolling in caps, so dropping several K on one from a vendor seems like too much for what will be just display material. I wish the game permitted me to put up strings of colorful penants and make a sign to give the place the look and feel of a 1950s used car lot. Bennie’s suit, from NV, would be the perfect apparel while hanging out there if it were available.

:smack: I don’t know why I didn’t think of dropping a few chests for spare parts storage. I just dropped an armor workbench nearby. Your idea is better.

As for frames, there’s a map online that shows all the frame locations, if you don’t mind a bit of outside help. There are 30+ of them scattered around the game world so it’s pretty easy to grab as many as you want. It’s cheating, but cheating in the name of aesthetics rather than game advantage so I consider it kosher.

I bought that one last night. And, stupidly, right before I bought it I bought some other combat rifle that does light AOE damage (“Spray & Pray”) that I’ll never use now that I own the double-shot one. Like 1,500 caps down the drain.

On the bright side, the double-shot one is indeed a beast.

I don’t have many uniques/legendaries that I use – the ones I’ve found tend to be pipe pistols and stuff that I wouldn’t use regardless. So I’m just rolling with a tricked out sniper rifle, some pipe sniper rifle I use for varmint killing or headshotting unarmored raiders, a 10mm pistol for radroaches and mole rats, my combat rifle and a done-up combat shotgun. I was depressed to learn that I lost my chance at the unique combat shotgun in Covenant due to my quest choices. Oh well. For some reason, I’ve never gotten into energy weapons in any of the Fallouts (which made Old World Blues a lot of fun, let me tell ya ) so my better zappers wind up on Piper.

Speaking of special effect stuff, last night I used a piece of Chameleon armor for the first time and thought my game glitched when I crouched

Speaking of armor, I’m at level 47 and still prancing around in the Minute Man General armor like a more fabulous version of Captain America. I don’t like the way it looks_at all_ but nothing better has presented itself, nor can I craft anything better (level 3 armor perk). The game designers seem to really, really want you to use power armor.
In previous games, there were things like Ranger Armor or Advanced Combat Armor that gave respectable levels of protection to those of us who prefer not to routinely run around in power armor. My three best sets right now are Minute Man General, Kellogg’s Outfit, and the Silver Shroud armor…and none of them suit how I would like my character to look. At cost of a huge quantity of adhesive, I upgraded a set of combat armor into polymer armor. Protection was still only about half of what the least of my ridiculous costumes offers, and it looked ridiculous in its own way. It was white and looked like a raw casting made to sell to cosplayers who could paint it for comic con. I’ve found, and sold, a metric ton of buffed raider armor bits and pieces, but even modded the stuff is still butt ugly and rather low in protection value.
All I’m asking is for a set of combat armor in a subdued color scheme that offers protection around 40 or so, like my Liberace suits do. I can live without any buffs to my stats or abilities.

You are wearing all six pieces of the combat armor, right?

Sturdy combat armor has a total value of 75 damage resistance, and that’s not taking mods into account.

The outfits are for characters who are going for low-strength stealth builds - they offer reasonable protection at a low weight, but are not better than a full suit of armor that can also grant up to six legendary bonuses.

Do containers remember what’s in them? Could you place a few trunks in sanctuary and use them to store various things and the game won’t forget them?

Is installing another mod the only way to pull a mod out of a weapon for later use?

Sure, if I’m reading you right. I built myself a couple dressers and safes in “my house” in Sanctuary and use them to store my guns, mods, outfits and whatnot.

I wouldn’t trust a container “in the wild” to not eat my stuff or spawn new loot in it or something but the ones in Sanctuary and other settlements/residences work fine.

Yes. You need to install a “standard” mod to remove the good one (or swap it for another mod you happen to have handy, heavy receiver for automatic receiver for instance). I believe someone upthread mentioned a game mod that allows you to keep mods when you scrap the weapon but that’s not how the base game works.

Yes, containers remember.

Installing another mod is required for harvesting them from weapons, but it doesn’t always cost parts. If you want to make sure you don’t lose net junk on the transaction, two ranks in the scrapping perk will keep you swimming in screws.

6 Pieces? I have the chest piece, the commando helmet (legendary), and the pieces for both arms and both legs. IIRC, each piece of the polymer armor had a protection value of 17. Do the values stack? IOW, is the protective value of the set 6 x 17 = 102? It seemed I started taking less damage when I started wearing the MMG outfit, but maybe I was just playing smarter…

Yes, the values stack, though not all body parts have the same value. A chest piece has a much higher value than other items from the same armor type.

You’re also able to wear an “underarmor” piece with pieced armor, such as the vault jumpsuit. That piece can also be modded to add different types of resistance.

Link to the different flavors of combat armor and their values. There are charts and then spoilers regarding armor locations, so click at your own risk.

I guess I’ll pull the polymer armor out of storage and give it another shot. I need to find something to wear under it that isn’t as brightly colored as a vault suit or the orange BOS uniform I had been using. I’ve found a couple-three BOS uniforms so far, but they’ve all been orange. I’ve seen some NPC’s wearing black ones that looked pretty cool, but I’m not quite ready yet to start murdering the Brotherhood just for their stuff.
