Well, now that the Patch with Survival Mode is official, it nerfs my mods. I’m trying it, but I’m pretty sure I’ll find it intolerable without save and quick travel options. Otherwise, the increased sense of desperation is potentially fun. Desperation for resources, that is. Desperation for a way to save the game is not fun.
There are mods that bring back quick save and quick travel at nexusmods.com.

I was going to say that Mod seem to be nerfed, but it turns out that I needed to restart Nexus Mod Manager. I got one mod that basically gives you an item that you can hotkey that creates an autosave. Another one allows you to open the console, whence you can enable fast travel manually.
So, I spent some time going at it that way. The consequences of low carry weight are a pill. That issue was the one thing that kept me from trying Josh Sawyer’s mod of New Vegas. But I’m pumping points in to STR here, and muddling by. The extra damage tends to amount insta-death if I’m dealing with multiple opponents. But, so far it’s preferable to the sense I normally have that I’m getting away with way too much. I like the fact that I care about food all of the sudden. I’m also taking a closer look at the drugs, which I normally see as just too much monkey business because normally the thing most likely to go wrong is an explosive, which you can’t really mitigate anyway. Forewarned, I made sure I could cook up antibiotics early. But I haven’t been diseased yet. The increased XP rate does feel earned, though.
Oh, and hey, if you’re thinking of trying it you might want to put off making the switch until after 1) Concord and maybe even 2) Corvega.
I’ll dick with it some more, but really I think I’d like to see a re-balance mod of this.
The teaser is out for the next DLC, Far Harbor. I’m getting vibes of both The Pitt and Point Lookout – a little pocket mini campaign you teleport into and out of with its own set of problems and theme monsters. Sure, why not?
As for the Survival mode + quicksave + fast travel, overall I’d say that the parts I expected to like I do find quite enjoyable. I like that I care about food and drink. I like that you can get diseases, though I wish it were clearer how I got some of them and what can be done about them. It would also be nice if the Medic perk had some effect on this. I like having to work around deadlier damage rates all around. I like that when I clear a site it stays cleared for a while unless a radiant quest repopulates it. Everything else sucks. I basically just cheated my way back up to normal carry weight, because otherwise shit just takes too long. It’s a challenge to your patience, not to your gaming skills. The tax on my actual time, rather than game days, is what makes it bullshit.
Buying a rank of Chemist is pretty much required for the early levels of survival- you’ll get sick a lot more often than you’ll find antibiotics. Even with antibiotics, I’m finding sickness to be a bit annoying. Three days in a row now I’ve cured myself, adventured around, gone to sleep… and woken up with a new disease. It’s probably thanks to the RadAway I had to take when a few rad storms hit Sanctuary.
A lot of people are complaining about the unlimited guided missiles called “molotovs” the raiders are tossing- quite a few of my deaths have been due to a surprise fireball to the face.
Preston Garvey has angrily accused me of being a mass murderer! That bothered me more than it probably should have, so I saved the game just in case and shot him in the back. That dropped him, but he didn’t die, and no one in Sanctuary became hostile.
I have downloaded the Automatron and Wasteland Workshop add ons, an look forward to putting him in a cage with a Deathclaw.
I guess most people reading this are already playing (or have played) but couldn’t think of a better thread for it…
Fallout 4 is $25 for PC/PS4/X1 from Newegg with coupon code EMCEJGF32
Free shipping with Newegg Premiere or Shop Runner. Otherwise it’s another $3
Weeeeird.
I told myself a couple days ago I’d get it this summer if I found it below $30.
It’s on the way. Thanks!
I’m going to mod this right out of the gate…anyone have a great mod setup they’d like to share?
The rest of the DLC was announced at E3. Two more “settlement” type DLCs (think one releases today? soon?) – one for “contraptions” and one for running a Vault – and one more story content DLC, set in a Nuka-Cola theme park.
I’m glad I got the Season Pass cheap because I’d be pretty disappointed in getting 2.5 story-based DLC and a bunch of “makin’ stuff” content (I’m splitting Automatron). I’m sure there’s a real market for the dollhouse aspects of the game but I’d rather have actual plot/story content and this has less of it than FO3/NV had.
Picked it up for half price during the Steam summer sale and loving it. Except for taking on Indiana Jones Jr. too soon and having to load a much older save.
I played the Automatron DLC the other night. Was fun and longer than I expected (that final location seemingly went on forever) although I don’t see myself making much use of the “Build-A-Bot” feature. One thing I noticed was that the bots I was fighting seemed much tougher than usual opponents and I died a couple times whereas I usually shrug off my enemies.
Was level 70ish in ballistic-weave reinforced BOS suit with mostly high end (sturdy/heavy) synth armor pieces. Maybe not the best for energy attacks but I never hurt like that when fighting foes with laser/plasma weapons. Edit: Looking, synth armor is actually balanced and weighted slightly towards energy attack protection so not as bad a choice as I thought.
Doing Far Harbor content now. The hotel/vault bit was amusing but I didn’t like how they pretty much push you into the solution rather than making you actually figure it out. I haven’t gotten into the whole Far Harbor/Synth/CoA triangle yet except to initially meet DiMA and start that chain.
I’m enjoying the Far Harbor stuff. I just had my first “repair the fog condensers” mission at a settlement. I had no idea what was going on- it was insane! I thought the game was glitched out, but now I know what I was doing wrong. That was fun.
I started playing again recently, because of the DLC and the G.E.C.K. having been out for a while, as I mentioned I would do upthread. But now I’m realizing that there’s still two more DLC coming out – and I’m not sure that my purchase of the Season Pass include them because I thought there were only going to be 4.
In this playthrough, I’m mostly building up and not even touching the core faction stuff until I’m already a powerhouse. Most of my XP these days is coming from turning corn into grits, which recipe was added in by some mod or other. In theory, I could pull the same trick more slowly using the Vegetable Adhesive recipe, with all the produce and water my settlements generate.
The season pass includes the upcoming DLC.
Ah. That’s good. Because I have a mod that causes food to decay in your inventory, and decayed food can be turned into fertilizer, I can produce a hell of a lot of Jet. I feel a bit guilty flooding Diamond City with the stuff, but since Nuka World will be mostly raiders, I can flood their markets with the stuff. And then kill them.
I found a partial set of T60 armor out past Nordhagen Beach and am wondering if the rest of it is around anywhere.
Once you hit a certain level, I believe you can find T-60 pieces whenever you discover a frame “in the wild”. Otherwise, you can get several sets worth from the Prydwen either by purchasing it, being awarded it during missions or stealing/killing for it.
Also, the Atom Cats sell it if you’re in tight with them.
Okay, thanks. Just keep wandering around in a haphazard T-51/T-60 suit until more of the good stuff turns up.
They get pretty common eventually. I have a row of T-60s in Sanctuary for my settlers to use, in the unlikely event anything gets through my security. (I don’t like using the power armor myself. I’m a sneaky melee type, not a stomping artillery platform.)
