Fallout New Vegas.

Quick question for those still following the thread and who have the Dead Money expansion. Would you recommending playing the original all the way through first, then getting Dead Money, or can you get it even if you haven’t completed the game? I got about half way through the original before I got really busy and had to put it aside (RL calls sometime), but I’m planning to pick it up again in the next week or so. I noticed that the expansion is out for PC’s on Steam now, so…should I wait until I’m done or go ahead and get it?

Get it now; you get an additional 5 levels and it works straight away (ie, before finishing the main quest).

F:NV is $10 on steam today only. So I grabbed it. Are any of the DLCs worth it - do they add significant content to the game - or should I just wait until they’re $2 each around Christmas? And… is it worth doing an unmodded run through to see the original game (ie is it good enough for that?) or should I mod it for my first run?

I bought the DLC for $3/each during the passed sale and I wouldn’t spend more than that. That’s Dead Money and Honest Hearts. The NPCs were interesting, but the gameplay was kind of flat. No idea if Old World Blues is better. I’d suggest you get a few convenience mods, like the PC UI fix mod (Darnified?) and the Lucky 38 marker mod.

I also got a player model mod 'cause the default ones are awful, but that was a personal taste thing.

If you find some good mods, please share in that thread.
The game is good enough unmodded. Mods might still add to it though.

Of the current DLCs I enjoyed Old World Blues the most (so far…I believe the final DLC is coming out this month). Honest Hearts and Dead Money were both ok…they added new weapons, increased your level cap and had some decent content, but they were pretty linear (sort of like the Anchorage DLC from FO3). IMHO both are worth doing just to get the level cap increase and some of the cool weapons and items.

If you want my advice, I’d do the first play through relatively unmodded and then mod later. One mod you might consider is the underground hideout mod I linked too in the other thread on this subject…it’s pretty cool and gives you a home base that’s better than any of the ones you can get in the game (I was using the Brotherhood safehouse before this). You might want to get one of the unlimited level cap mods too if you really hate running up against the cap. The other mods I linked too sort of unbalance the game, especially the sniper mod…the .50 cal is a one shot kill on even death claws, and even the .308 is just sick in the damage it does. They really look cool though.

Old World Blues is really fun – the best of the DLC so far, by far.

Honest Hearts was very short and not very interesting, IMO.

I just finished Dead Money last night and, dear God, what an ordeal that was. I had actually put about 12-15 hours in it earlier this month and then gave up in frustration, and then last week I started a new game and tore through it just for the sake of completion. Except for the writing, which was interesting but not interesting enough to salvage it, everything about it was painfully frustrating and not worth going through. I must have died 15-20 times in the last game area from that stupid collar alone.

Edit: What’s the release date for the Lonesome Road?

I recommend you start with the mods which either make a minimal change but improve the game, or else fix bugs. Things like MTUI.

There isn’t an official release date, afaik, but I’ve hear the 21st. It’s supposed to be this month but I wouldn’t be surprised if they push. If anyone is interested in what IS known about it, there is a Fallout Wiki article on it here.

It looks like it will be more like Honest Hearts or Dead Money than Old World Blues, which kind of sucks. I’ll still get it though.

Here is a link to MTUI for anyone interested. It is a cool mod though I’m not currently using it.

I kind of wish I had it for PC so Icould download the motorcycle mod… it looks crazy fun.

Do you have a link? I haven’t seen a motorcycle mod.

Just finished Dead Money and Honest Hearts.
Dead Money I didn’t like so much for gameplay and scenery, but the story was quite interesting, if you cared to follow it. But the game space itself was dull, gloomy and dark with gimpy enemies. I did manage to get all the gold bars out though, so there’s that.

Honest Hearts was a better game space - canyons and wildlife (trees! plants!) but the story seemed quite short. In any case I’m hanging around here a bit more just to see that there’s nothing I’ve missed and figure out how I’m going to get all my loot back home to Goodsprings.

Yeah, Dead Money was my least favorite. It also sucks that once you leave you can’t go back. I didn’t manage to get all the gold out and wish I had tried. I also didn’t get all the mods for the holorifle or some of the unique weapons from the zone…I have a vault mod with a weapons display wall and several holes that I’ll never be able to fill now. :frowning:

As for Honest Hearts, I agree, it was better though a pretty short story. It’s pretty easy to get all your stuff out…you can go back. What I did was use the footlocker right outside the portal back to LV to put all the stuff I wanted to keep, then made like 2 trips to get it all back to my vault. It’s not a problem anymore since I have the perk that allows me to fast travel even when overloaded, but that’s how I did it before the perk.

If you haven’t tried it yet, get Old World Blues. IMHO, it’s the best DLC yet. Lonesome Road is supposed to come out this month to finish off the official DLCs, but from looking at it I’d say it will be more like Dead Money/Honest Hearts than Old World Blues…but guess we’ll see. It’s supposed to be out on the 20th of September.
Just acquired FNV from the Steam sale!

I have had a bad habit in the past of not specializing my characters very well until later in the game (Fallout 3). This time, I thought I’d get on it from the start.

I found in F3 that I was really digging it when I was able to get a crap-ton of action points. I also like sneaking, sniping, and lock picking…whatever that says about me as a person! So during generation in FNV, I decided to go with a superfast character. I took Kamikaze and Small frame, hoping that by getting more shots off I could I would take less damage and everything would balance out. My SPECIAL breaks down as:
St 5
Pe 8
En 5
Ch 5
In 7
Ag 9
Lu 4

This is after using the perk to raise two stats one point each.

Question: Did I go too far, and am I going to get the crap beat out of me everywhere I go?

Too far? Nah. You’re going to have a hell of a fun time playing the way you want and creating the character you want.

Everyone gets their ass handed to them on a silver platter from time to time and I think that a challenging game is a more enjoyable one, especially with a sandbox like this one because there are so many different ways to accomplish the same things. Enjoy!

PS I 'm playing it as we speak. :stuck_out_tongue:

Naw, you should be fine as long as you don’t try and run a tank type player. The cool thing about the game is that it can accommodate lots of different play styles since there are many ways to go through. I’d suggest going the stealth route with rifles…with that build and the perks for stealth and snipe it’s pretty powerful, especially if you get one of the heavy hitter npcs.

There are some mods I listed in one of these threads for sniper rifles and a ghilliy suit that you should check out as well. Plus the mod for an underground vault of your own…a must have IMHO.

Boone was my favorite follower. My favorite part of FNV was hunting geckos and scorpions in the desert and canyon on the south side of the map. He’s a great sniper and would often be picking off unseen enemies at my 6 o’clock when I snapped to third person view. Boone’s the man and will keep you safe from a lot of unsavory characters.

Just one more thing. You seem quite balanced actually compared to how I started the game. Bear in mind that the higher your intelligence, the more skill points you get to distribute when you level up, and the higher endurance you have the more Hit Points you get when you level up.
Just something to keep in mind

I think that high Int will get all of your skills maxed the fastest, but isn’t necessary in the long run. At least for Fallout 3 there’s a guide on GameFAQs that shows you how to get all your skills to 100 by max level with the lowest possible Int (so you don’t cap a skill before you find the bobblehead or all the books for it, wasting precious points).
