Consider yourself lucky if you haven’t encountered damn Cazadors - they make Giant Radscorpions look like Bloatflies.
Love the Deathclaws. They seem a hell of a lot tougher than in Fallout 3, although that might be just me. Discovered Sloan, the fella there told me that there was no way north to Vegas due to the Deathclaws - naturally I scoffed. Was level 9 and my Cowboy Repeater had done just fine thus far, I’d either sneak past em or blow em away.
Headed north and bumped into one pretty much straight away. Shot it in the head…barely made a dint in its health. Ran…it runs quicker and kills me in one hit. Had to play a game of cat and mouse around a concrete ledge to kill it, using nearly all my .357 Magnum ammo in the process. Skulked back to Sloan, half expecting the guy there to say “I told you so…”
I’m so removing the level 30 cap when I get to it. It seems highly unlikely that I’ll run out of steam before then. I have nowhere near the skill numbers or perks that I want, or had in Fallout 3 at the same (or lower) level.
I just hope I don’t run out of quests to do before I get my character to the god-like status of my FO3 character.
So far I’ve encountered and killed one deathclaw, but he was a young’un, and I was at a distance, sneaking (sneak bonus to critical chance), using a fairly decent weapon (marksman carbine) and a guns skill of 100.
ETA: The Marksman Carbine is the first, and only gun in this game I’ve actually bought. It was a shall I or shall I not decision. I’m quite glad I decided to fork out the 6000 or so caps for it. I bought it from the robot at Gun Runners.
I’m not close to done with the game and already level 25, so I’ll certainly cap out long before I finish all the quests (or, at this point, even the main quest story line). I’ll be putting in a mod for upping the level cap as soon as someone puts one out (though I’ll save the game before so that when they put out a DLC I can go back to that point).
The only guns I’ve bought so far are the .50 cal (from the Brotherhood of Steel…I got it for a bargain at 1500 caps…it was beat to hell, but with the Jury Rigger perk I can fix it with Varmint Rifles) and ThatGun. I want to save my caps for medical mods.
Oh…and if you do the Brotherhood of Steel quest line you get a pretty nice house that’s equipped with a reload bench and a work bench, storage lockers and even a Brotherhood guy who will fix stuff for you (at a price). I really miss my customizable house in FO3 (and especially my Personal Vault mod), but it’s the best place I’ve found so far that’s easy to get to and has all the stuff you need (you can fast travel right to it and then just walk inside and into the basement). I’m moving all my stuff from NoVac right now, getting it all set up there.
Anyone know how you can get power armor training? I’ve done all the quests (that I know of) for the Brotherhood, but no one has offered to give me the training yet.
I did talk to the elder when I finished bringing back the vault items and he said thanks (with some XPs) and that I could have the key to the safehouse and use it as my own. Nothing about power armor training.
That’s the first quest. You get power armor training after the second quest. Think you need to go away for a few days as they “get ready to end the lockdown” or whatever it is they say and then you get this ridiculously easy quest to do. It’s a bit silly that the first one is way, way harder yet the Elder says it’s not sufficient for Paladin status, but then he gives you a trivial quest for that.
Of course, I had already cleared out the target location for another quest, so YMMV.
Nope…that was the last quest. The first quest was to go out and find all the dead brothers. The second quest was to go out and make contact with all of the scouts. Then the third quest was to get the parts needed to fix stuff in the bunker (there was also the side quests to fix the computer virus problem and decide if you wanted to help overthrow the elder). That was pretty much it as far as I can tell, since no one is giving me any more quests when I ask.
After you get the parts to fix the air filtration system, you wait a few (~3) days for the lockdown to end. Then ask McNamara if you can join the Brotherhood of Steel. He will give you a new quest (Eyesight to the Blind), where you need to go to Black Mountain and install a monitoring device in the radar equipment there. Return to McNamara and he’ll give you Power Armor Training and a T-45d suit and helmet.
You’ll also be able to buy more stuff from Knight Torres, their quartermaster. Really good stuff there. At level 20 I was able to buy a non-Brotherhood T-51b suit and helmet (no inconvenient Brotherhood disguise), a gauss rifle, and all sorts of other goodies.
I highly recommend bookmarking The Vault, a great wiki for all things Fallout.
Bolding mine, did you know you don’t actually need to wait for a Mod? When it’s time, I’m just going to try the console command…
“set imaxcharacterlevel 100”
I did this on FO3. You have to reaload your save once you’ve done it (assuming your save already has a character higher than level 30)
You mentioned the Jury Rigger perk. that’s definitely one I’m quite far from getting, but definitely want.
In FO3 I raised my repair skill very early in the game to enable me to repair weapons to the highest possible condition, but in FONV I quickly realized that you could do this with a very low repair skill level, so It became one of my neglected skills.
Other skills I’ve neglected…
Unarmed,
Survival (From what I know of it, I think I can manage perfectly well without it. I never eat or drink stuff. I use stimpacks all the time)
Melee weapons (I prefer to deal with stuff before it gets close enough!)
Explosives (Not really necessary for my play style… although I will increase it to a point where I can reclaim grenades from traps for selling)
also, in the unlikely event that you’ve played the game WAY beyond 30, such that you’ve actually maxed out all your skills and/or picked all possible perks, and you still intend to keep levelling… you can either download a mod to enable you to get past those screens, or you can run a console command that closes them.
Can anyone give me the directory that the saved games is located in? For some reason my saved games aren’t being backed up to the cloud, and I need to make an emergency trip out of town tonight and would like to take my character with me.
Again, I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will say there’s a Difficult Choice coming up regarding which of the four ending (House, NCR, Legion, None Of The Above) paths you want to take, and whilst I was initally “I don’t want to do that!” I thought about it some more, and was then more like “Well played, Obsidian. Well played.”
What’s the difficult choice? Killing House because he’s defenseless? Taking out the BoS (you don’t have to)? It can’t be taking out Benny; he’s voiced by Matthew Perry. I only wish I’d had a chainsaw handy when his time came.
Well, long-term Fallout players have probably learned to hedge their bets (pun intended in this case) regarding which “path” to take, and usually you can wait until the last moment before making your decision.
In this case, if you follow the quest line “Wild Cards”, then you basically go and ally yourself with most of the independent factions in the Wasteland. However, if you follow “The House Always Wins” questline, then
Part V of the Quest is to go and destroy the Brotherhood of Steel bunker
, which is somewhat difficult because
if you’ve been following “Wild Cards” as a bet-hedge, then you’ve completed all the BoS quests and would probably prefer not to blow them up when they’ve made you a Paladin and supplied you with all sorts of neat stuff.
Also, pretty much regardless of which Questline you’re following, you’re going to end up with the Platinum Chip, which you’ve likely used to upgrade the Securitrons. Which means that, after that point, If you don’t follow The House Always Wins, you’re likely going to end up fighting Securitron Mk IIs at one point or another.
And it goes without saying (and is thus unspoilered) that pretty much anything you do that isn’t helping Caesar is going to make you their enemy fairly quickly. Or, to put it another way, the Main Questline(s) divergences after you get to New Vegas appear to be mutually exclusive; you can’t side with Yes Man without pissing off Caesar’s Legion and the NCR, for example.

I certainly do this, and it seems to have broken two quest lines for me.
The Great Khans, I can’t get the conversations going after exposing the Legion agent’s plans; and the BoS people refuse to talk to me after I got McNamara all the goodies needed for the filtration systems.
Basically, I tried to do as much as possible for everyone involved, and now I can do no more. This makes me very apprehensive about moving forward with the main quest.
I had the same problem where Lornezo wouldn’t take the filtration parts. But I hadn’t give Ede-e to him yet, and when I went through those options, but decided I need more time at the last minute It opened up the filter parts turn in.
