Fallout TV Show coming to Amazon, April 2024 (No spoilers for at least a week)

I’m usually pretty dubious about video game based movies since they are usually meh at best. But westworld is a fairly decent show, and fallout is one of my favorite game franchises, so I think I might actually be excited!

I hope it’s a story about a hoarder who just. Can’t. Stop. Picking up 5000 battered clipboards.

TV show, not movie.

I think Fallout is a perfectly good world/premise for a show. Westworld has turned into crap now, but perhaps they’ll do better with a Fallout show.

I always saw Fallout as basically the Mad Max world without the rights to Mad Max. More Fallout 1 and 2 were like that, anyway.

Movie/show, whichever. Imma watch it! I hope the protagonist struggles with jet/pschojet addiction and steals/collects ball peen hammers to fund his addiction.

I’m cautiously optimistic. I really enjoyed Fallout 3, Fallout NV and Fallout 4 and I think there are plenty of elements in there to make an entertaining TV series. And certainly Season 1 of Westworld shows that they can make a stylish, visually impressive TV show.

My worry would be a show that ends up with 90% style and 10% substance. For recent TV series, I enjoyed “The Witcher” (which wasn’t perfect in terms of visual style, but it breezed along at a reasonably brisk speed) and I was only moderately entertained by “Watchmen” (which looked very stylish but I felt kind of meh about the plot).

I would love to see a Fallout world based movie or show, hopefully it doesn’t suck.

Long ago, when D&D was only a few years old, they came out with a post nuclear apocalypse version of D&D called Gamma World. I think Fallout was based on those ideas, but of course the lore was modified and improved a lot by the game designers over the years.

The history and lore are so substantial with Fallout as it currently stands that one could come up with a story that’s at least halfway decent and has a lot of fan-pleasing references to stuff from the Fallout world. Hope they’re successful.

Is Fallout an unofficial sequel to Wasteland? I know Wasteland eventually got a sequel of its own, but I thought Wasteland 1 was essentially Fallout 0.

I’ve never played any of the Wasteland games.

I always heard the wasteland comparison too. I used to ride my bike across the neighborhood to my friend’s house just to watch him play wasteland on his apple IIe. It was pretty fun and definitely had the same nuclear apocalypse feel to it. I don’t recall any vaults though.

I am definitely interested. It is already an interesting and well fleshed out world. The devil is in the execution. It is a huge world and it is not like they are adapting one single plotline from a book series.

If this is the new TV show, I’m not seeing Chris Avellone, Josh Sawyer, Tim Cain, Mark O’Green, Jason Taylor, and so on. I.E. any of the writers that made the Fallout universe such a rich one to game in, and made you want to learn and explore more of it.

If the Westworld people think that special effects, a few Super Mutants, and a wisecracking Mr. Handy are all that’s going to be needed, we’ll have a problem.

You know what, the internet says Fallout is a sequel to Wasteland, although I’ve never seen or heard of Wasteland previously. The reference I (thought I) saw about the Gamma World --> Fallout connection seems to be eluding me now. Maybe the connection isn’t as strong as I thought.

The original game is over 30 years old now; I played it on my Commodore 64 but only got as far as Vegas.

The original Fallout and New Vegas make direct references to the Desert Rangers, the player characters’ faction in Wasteland. There is one significant difference between Wasteland and the Fallout series: in Wasteland, the Russians sent the nukes. So the Fallout series is a spiritual successor rather than a true sequel.

Definitely a spiritual sequel. They basically did a reboot of it.

Wasteland eventually got a real sequel and Wasteland 3 hits August 28.

Images of Amazon’s version of Super·Duper·Mart have hit the 'Net.

Here’s what the location looked like four years ago:

According to the IMDB, the cast currently includes Walton Goggins and Kyle McLachlan. I hope to God one of them plays a ghoul.

The retro futuristic style of fallout is very different from mad max. There were a lot of nods to mad max in the original game, but that’s as far as it goes. I am glad to see they have outdoor locations, I fully expected them to cheap out and base the series entirely inside a vault.

It’s sometimes tough to track down all the DNA. The first Fallout game was released in 1997, and most people consider it to be the spiritual sucessor to Wasteland (1988). But Gamma World was first released in 1978, and while I never quite made the connection between it and Wasteland, or Fallout, it’s been so long since I’ve even looked at Gamma World that I can hardly make an informed opinion now. The first two Fallout games are quite different in tone from the 1st person Bethesda games in that they’re much darker. While I enjoy the Bethesda games, I prefer the stories from the first two games.

I’m with the OP in that I’m skeptical because video adaptations have a long history of bad adaptations. I consider the first Mortal Kombat movie to be a decent video game adaptation, so that really tells you how low the bar is as far as my expectations go. I suspect a lot of video game adaptations are simply attempts to cash in while a property is hot, so they don’t concern themselves too much with tiny issues like plot or acting. But the Fallout series has a track record for good narratives, and I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with this.

And of course Gamma World came from the even earlier game Metamorphosis Alpha.

I’m noticing that the styling of logos and such resembles Fallout 4 version of the Super-Duper Mart than the Fallout 3 rendition. Makes sense, since FO4 is a lot more current.

Also hints to me that the rest of the styling of the movie will be FO4/FO76, not FO3/FONV.

Anyone know where and when in the Fallout milieu this series is set?

Amazon had no comment on the character Goggins will play in the series. According to sources, he will play a character based on the ghouls from the games.

It may not turn out great, but it certainly doesn’t look shitty! “From the Studio Behind Free 2-Day Shipping…”
