In this thread dealing with foods one wishes they liked, a few posters mentioned coffee, and someone declared coffee to be false advertising—smells great, but (in their opinion) tastes awful.
Leaving out the fact that this is all kinds of crazy talk, since coffee is Nature’s Most Perfect Food, I wondered what other foods and/or beverages make the consumer feel misled. (This is slightly different from the linked thread, in that you don’t necessarily have to wish you enjoyed the food and it’s more about sight and smell than nutrition.)
Steak is one for me. I love the way it smells when it’s cooking. So yummy! Then I get it in front of me and…eh. It has to be an extremely lean piece, cooked to what I consider perfect pinkness. And even then it has the potential to gross me right out.
Creme brulee is another one. It looks so pretty, and who doesn’t love a dessert that combines sweet food with blowtorching things? Except…it’s eggs. And eggs are supposed to be savory, according to my taste buds.
Anyone else feel cheated by the smell or appearance of a food or beverage?
