Familial distribution of genders

My other half came up with the notion that if your first child is a girl, then you are more likely to have girls as subsequent offspring. I couldn’t find anything in a Google search, so I thought I would conduct a straw poll amongst Dopers - just for the fun of it.

So to start off, here is the composition of my family:

Boy (me)
Boy
Girl
Boy

Grim

Boy
Girl
Girl (me)

My Dad’s family:

Girl
Girl
Boy (my Dad)

My Mom’s family:

Boy
Girl
Girl
Girl (my Mom)

My family

Girl (me)
Girl
Boy
Side note: “girl” is another of those words that looks really weird when you write it out a few times.

I’m an only child.

Dad’s family

7 boys, then one girl

Mom’s family

2 boys, then 3 girls

My father’s family–boy first, then three girls.

My mother’s family–first was a girl, wound up with 6 girls and 3 boys.

My family–one girl, no boys.

Girl
Boy
Boy (me.)

If your other half is right, we were bucking the odds.

Oh, and my sister’s branch of the clan goes like this:

Girl
Girl
Boy

Boy (me)
Girl
Girl

In my immediate family, I had a girl first and then a boy.

In my family (my parents and siblings), it was three girls. I’m the youngest.

In my father’s family, it was boy, boy, boy.

In my mother’s family, it was girl, boy, girl.

  • even the damn guinna pigs are female in that cursed ostrogen den.

I’m an only child.

In general, Dad’s side is male-heavy and Mom’s side is female-heavy.

My mother’s family - 4 girls
My father’s - 2 boys, 1 girl. (in that order.)
Mine - 2 boys (me and my brother.)
My kids - 2 girls
Uncles and aunts:
Aunt 1: 2 boys
Uncle - 1 girl
Aunt 2 - 1 girl
Aunt 3 - 2 boys.
Aunt 4 - none.

You see that even if I really, really wanted a boy, I would have been wise to give up at two.

My family of origin does not matter as I can provide only x chromosomes.

However, the order for my generation was: boy/girl/girl/boy/boy/girl.

My father’s generation was boy/girl.

Dearly Beloved’s family is easy:

boy/boy

His father: boy/boy

His uncle: boy/boy

His grandfather: boy/boy

And following in the family tradition, our family together is: boy/boy.

When Dearly Beloved said he would like to have a third child but only if it were a girl, I suggested we adopt. I am afraid they have to marry girls.

Mom’s:

Dad’s:

Their kids:

(you ever notice that if you type the word “boy” a lot it starts to look weird? Maybe it’s just me.)

My mother, and my older sister, both had one girl followed by four boys.

(It was kind of eerie when we realised.)

My dad:

(Possible girl), girl (me), girl, girl.

His old girlfriend was a radical feminist who wouldn’t have let him know if the daughter was his, but he’s pretty sure it was.

We joke that he has no real Y chromosomes.
