No, those are two completely different scenarios. If the other term isn’t in the survey, they always accept synonyms. And, even then, most of the time, synonyms are lumped together even in the survey itself. Most people don’t say the exact words that appear on the board. The loose pattern matching applies just as much to the survey as to the competition.
And, yes, the additional information explains why this time was an exception, as “liverwurst” is being used as a word, and not for its meaning.
I thought liver sausage and liverwurst were the same, although I always refer to it by the first term.

Ya, they are, just like liver sausage and /wurst are the same thing. I was going for two foods that are the same but have very different names which may throw the judges enough to issue a thumbs down. I wouldn’t agree with those judges either but ‘I could see’ and understand this occurring, especially on a survey-based show.
Obviously, this was all before the question clarification on the OP.
