There is a famous newspaper full-page newspaper ad of a racehorse ridden by a jockey. (At least I think it’s an ad, though it might be a story.) The picture takes up most of the page. I was reminded of it recently when I saw it, of all places, while watching a rerun of Hee Haw. Grandpa Jones picks up the paper and puts it in front of his face, and there is that famous picture. I used to know who the horse is, and now it is driving me crazy. I do not believe it is Secretariat, for the colors and the year are wrong. The episode was broadcast in December of 1971. Does anyone have any idea what I am talking and what this horse is?
Do you remember any details-head on, from the side, angled shot? Close up or far away?
You definitely need to give more details. A photograph is taken the winner of every race, and has been for decades before Hee Haw. It could have been a recent Kentucky Derby winner or a well-known race horse of the era.
You appropriately ruled out Secretariat. He was relatively unknown prior to the 1973 Kentucky Derby win.
The Kentucky Derby is for 2 year olds. Secretariat was just a tiny little foal in '71.
Actually, the Derby is for 3 year olds. Secretariat was born in March 1970.
Was this it?
Now that you mention it, you’re right. My bad. I was mistakenly remembering that it’s all the 2yo races everyone looks at and speculates on up-and-coming Derby contenders, and conflating that with the Derby itself. I personally don’t follow the 2 year olds, don’t start looking at them until 3, and don’t bet on anything except 4 and up races, so I’m not really too familiar with the young ones.
