Jack Carter, at the Angels’ Hollywood Stars night.
Mickey Rooney, June 21, 1966, driving near the L. A. Coliseum.
George Takei, of Star Trek, during a bus-system hearing in Los Angeles.
There must be many others among the Teeming Millions whose path has crossed that of a well-known person.
Well, I’m not sure if Huey Lewis from the eighties band “Huey Lewis and the News” counts as a famous person or not. Framed a wedding photo for him once.
Had the distinct honor of meeting Jerry Garcia when the JGB played here in Richmond in '93. I was working for the City and managed to be backstage at the Coliseum before the show. Very cordial guy and about as down to earth as you could get. He even posed for a picture with me - to make it sufficiently weird, we stood up against a wall and I did a handstand. He’s standing next to me, completely straighfaced. I have it framed and sitting on my desk at home.
I don’t think I’ve ever met a real famous person. Baby sat John Lithgow’s nephews twice, that’s probably the closest I’ve ever been to celebrity. Passed Carl Sagan on campus once. Did not accost him.
Good for you, Motorgirl. I would not want to “accost” anyone of his standing.
I met Peter Scolari (of Newhart fame) on the set of The Love Boat while my cousin was doing an extra part. Well, okay, we didn’t exactly meet and exchange pleasantries, but he did tell me not to go onto the set when the red light was on. <g>

I have umpired many Fast Pitch games where Bobby Cox’s (Atlanta Braves skipper) daughter played. As a result I’ve met Bobby and his wife many times.

I’m going to hijack this thread for a second… Do you suppose Peter Scolari ever sees a Tom Hanks movie and just wants to kick his own ass? He’ll forever be know as the Bosom Buddy that didn’t make it!

Huh??
Lee Corso (ESPN) sat in front of me on a plane once.
I met Jimmy Buffet at the FlorBama lounge. We’re buds now.
I worked for my college Activities Board and for a volunteer folk/acoustic music series, so I’ve met a lot of moderately famous folks. In my year with SAB, I had dinner with the Indigo Girls and with Andy Richter (Conan o’ Brien’s sidekick), and got to meet Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.
With Troubadour, I’ve met John Prine, Arlo Guthrie, Roger McGuinn, Bela Fleck, Steve Earle, Bruce Hornsby, Ray Davies (of the Kinks)…several others. Bruce Hornsby’s interaction with his fans puts all the other musicians I’ve met to shame–he just loves to talk about what he does. He actually found me after the show and apologized for not playing the request I had put in, because he couldn’t remember how it went. He’s coming back for two shows in a few weeks–I can’t wait.

I thought about not posting here, because this is kinda cheating: I interview famous people for a living. So it’s not like we’re pals or neighbors or I just ran into them on the street.
However, I DID just run into on the street: Elizabeth Taylor, Andy Warhol, Tim Robbins, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Drew Barrymore, Ed Asner (are you there, Sqrl?).
I’ve interviewed Shirley MacLaine, Ashley Judd (very smart), Adam Sandler (very sweet), Bette Davis, Nic Cage, Spike Lee, Esther Ralston (silent movie star), Richard Grieco, Lili Taylor, Tony Franciosa (also very sweet), Olivia De Havilland, Ann Miller, Lypsinka, Margaret O’Brien, Christina Ricci, Sean Young (everything you’ve heard about her is true), Sharon Stone (very nice and professional), Linda Ellerbee, Jill Clayburgh, John Waters . . . Umm, other people too, I’m sure, but it’s Friday and my mind is going blank.

All those people are fascinating, Eve. But what we really want to know is: What’s Oona Merkle really like?
Dougie, <g> is shorthand for <grin>, which you couldn’t used to do when HTML was enabled. It’s most popular in areas where smilies are impossible and/or in place of
smilies.
And now <sigh> I will trot out once again my only encounter with fame: I went to school with the girl who plays Alison the make-up girl on Sports Night. I know, it’s more of a “Before they were famous” encounter, but it’s all I got
“I hope life isn’t a big joke, because I don’t get it,” Jack Handy
Sadly, plnnr, I never got to meet Una Merkel.
I do, however, have a crush on Peter Scolari. Or at least I did back in his Bosom Buddies and Newhart days.
University of Kentucky, baby!

Oh yeah, I forgot. I met Cecil once.
