I remember being enthralled with this story in an anthology as a little girl - jewel smuggling, murder, mayhem, a midget posing as a little girl, even a face-rape with a porcellin doll!

Of course, I’m now old enough to realize that none of it’s true but i would like to know its’ origins - who wrote the story, where was it first published

The first Google result for “Fanchon Moncare” leads to this post, which attributes it to Robert L. Ripley, and indicates that it was published in one of Ripley’s comic book anthologies in the 1970s. A little further searching on Ripley and “The Devil’s Midget” leads to Issue 30 of Ripley’s Believe It or Not, published in December, 1971.
