fantastic planet

has anyone else seen this?
Am I the only one?

awww, I thought this thread was gonna be about Failure.

Do you mean Forbidden Planet?

No, she means this movie.

Yes, I’ve seen it a long time ago. Great movie.

wow! another failure fan???
I am MAD for failure!

I remember seeing this movie as a kid. hearing fantastic planent by failure made me go buy it, the movie, on DVD.

no, it is def. fantastic planet. an animated french movie, circa 1960’s.

That movie is the most EVIL movie ever made. I saw it when I was about 8, and have never seen it since.

It has a “plot” that makes no sense, crappy animation, and seems like it’s about 6 BORING HOURS long.

For those who don’t know, it’s about these giant blue aliens who don’t give a crap about the tiny humans that are also on the planet. These humans are usually squashed and torn apart like bugs (usually by the kid aliens). Two of these humans run out to somewhere in the desert, where they find a lot of other tiny humans. They all meet in a cave, take off their clothes (although they don’t wear clothes much during the movie), get power from God or something, and finally violently kill the giant aliens. I think.

Joint French/Czek production + bad animation + bad music + weird empty early 70s psycadelic plot + graphic violence + gratuitous nudity = EVIL MOVIE!!

Sorry, but I really, really hate “Fantastic Planet.”

I saw “Fantastic Planet” at a drive-in, as the second half of a double bill with the Italian Star Wars ripoff “Starcrash”. Caroline Munro in her leather space bikini was more memorable than giant blue cartoon aliens.

I remember they used to show clips from it on Sesame Street. Never knew what the hell it was until I rented it on video years later. It’s from Czechoslovakia, I believe.

I loved Fantasic Planet. Has anybody seen the DVD yet? Is it worth getting?

Sorry I missed you last night, BNB. I leave my AIM account logged on here at work sometimes when I leave. Please don’t think I was ignoring you. I’m usually here from 10am-7pm EST.

I’ve seen it many times, and have it on video (not DVD). It’s interesting, but I have to agree with The Science Fiction Encyclopedia that the plot is ancient, derivative, and not very good. It’s the visuals and the weird creatures that form the “background” to the main story that make it interesting. They don’t make any sense, either in terms of the story or biologically, but they are fun. My favorite is the caged creature that entices birdlike things to land on his “lure”. He doesn’t eat them, though (that would make too much sense) – he simply grabs them, shakes them up, and throws them to the ground. Then he laughs evilly. The camera pulls back and you see the ground littered with smooshed bird things.
If you liked this, or found it at all interesting, you should know that about twenty years later a lot of the same people got together to make another weird science fiction animated film. It’s called Light Years. What makes it interesting is that Isaac Asimov (!) wrote the english script. Christopher Plummer provides one of the voices. (This was released in the US about the same time as Star Trek VI, which also featured Plummer in an sf role.)

Fantastic Planet is one of those movies that is infinitely more enjoyable if you ignore the story and watch it with the sound off. The Cell is another. (Speaking of which, in The Cell there’s a scene of Jennifer Lopez smoking dope and watching … Fanstastic Planet.)

I own this movie on video (pre-dvd days) and think it is great. The plot isn’t as bad as people here are saying. It basically has the plot of Spartacus (the humans lead a rebellion against their oppressors by exploiting a weakness). It is schlocky but consistent. It maintains its surreality throughout with weird background things happening.
SPOILER

The humans kill the aliens during what I figure was either their mating or sleeping ritual. The aliens to sleep/mate have to astrally leave their body and go to the moon or something and the humans figure it out, rebuild a rocket ship and go to the planet and smack out their souls. Now that is dark.

HUGs!
