Cool - please keep a slot open for me if there’s room; I’d love to join; hopefully someone more experienced will agree to sit in as commish. Maybe I could be vice commish to help out, learn the ropes etc?
Bump? Any action here? I’m itchin’ to get my fantasy baseball fix…
Ah, the two and a half feet of snow we got last week threw my weekend plans for a loop.
I’ll get it started tonight or tomorrow night. I’ll send out the invites to those who’ve been in the league before first, give it a few days to see how much of a response we get, then open it up to more (don’t worry, DragonAsh, I’m positive there’ll be room for you).
Can I be on the waiting list too? I’d like to join as well, if it’s a competitive and fun league. The only thing I really can’t stand is a dead silent league of robots who never talk and never trade - I love good-natured trash talk, especially towards people who draft closers in the third round and all the managers who pass Barry Zito around the league like a strain of genital herpes.
I’ve been playing fantasy sports for about 10 years now, baseball for 6, and I worship at the altar of Nate Silver.
We did have someone use this league as their entry into fantasy baseball a few years ago promising to remain committed and involved. He then drafted Joe Mauer #2 overall (before he really did anything) and McCann with his Round 2 pick.
We only start 1 catcher in our league. He didn’t make it to July.
And didn’t someone several years ago trade Pujols (or was it A-Rod?) for Johnny Damon and Alberto Callapso?
But seriously, we’ve got a core of 14 who’ve been in this league for several years (the history I have goes back to 2003). We’ve been between 16 and 20 teams for the last 6 years. Last year was the first time we were as low as 16.
So with that, when I send out the invites, I won’t wait for initial replies to see how full we get (even if we get all 16 back, we’ll still have 4 openings. So anyone who’s expressed interest, PM me and I’ll send you back the league info.
Here’s last year’s thread. Always fun looking at the recaps in hindsight - like Munch lauding the selection of Russell Martin in round 3, Edwin Encarnacion in round 9 and Pat Burrell in round 11. Or, to be fair, my saying that I was glad to have picked David Price instead of Matt Cain.
For those new to this league - besides trying for a lot of depth, we use some non-standard settings.
The settings are:
Roster Positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, IF, LF, CF, RF, OF, Util, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL
Stat Categories: R, HR, RBI, SB, OBP, SLG, W, SV, K, HLD, ERA, WHIP
So a bit different from standard Yahoo - deeper rosters, with the IF and OF positions, plus the added twist of LF/CF/RF instead of generic outfield.
And then in stat categories we use OBP and SLG instead of average, and we add Holds to the standard five for pitchers.
Max Games Played 162, Max innings 1300.
Wow. Did you have a flex slot? Not that that would make it a good decision; but…at least a less stupid one.
Ouch! To be fair, Martin should have put up great numbers last year - his decline came out of nowhere. Plus, he turned out better than several in front of him (Ortiz, Vlad, Quentin)! Edwin was a decent pick at that point - but also disappeared. There weren’t many 3Bs left at that point. At least, that’s what I’m going with…
Yeah - we have a Util slot. He had clearly done his preranking by position and didn’t make the draft.
Haven’t been checking in here much lately, but I’m in for this year. Did better than I’d expected last time around, and should have more time to devote to it this year.
League is up. The invite has gone out to everyone in last year. Anyone else, PM me for the league info.
Draft time is set for Thursday the 25th at 10pm EST. Hope that works for everyone.
Is anyone else having issues connecting to the server for the system test? If you remember, I was screwed last year because I couldn’t connect, and I’m not confident about this year, as I’ve never successfully connected - sometimes after an entire day. I’ve half a mind to try a test draft just to see if it’ll connect to something real.
I’m running Vista 64-bit with IE7, if that helps - any suggestions for improved setups would be welcome.
- What’s your connection?
- Try installing Firefox as well.
It’s a pretty fast broadband.
I’ll look into Firefox.
Dammit. FireFox is doing the exact same thing - it’s just got the whirligig and a note “Connecting to server…” and doesn’t do anything else.
I wonder if my husband might have futzed with the firewall.
Is it a laptop? Your best bet may be a coffee shop.
No - it’s a desktop, and it’s definitely something to do with my particular computer, because I tried it on my husband’s laptop (running XP) and got right in on the same home network that mine is hooked up to, and I tried it on my computer here at work (running Vista) and got right in here, too. I’ll have to check my security settings. Failing that, I suppose I can fire up my ancient laptop.
Pain in the butt is what it is.
A-ha! It was my internet security settings. It works now. Whew!
Nice! I always forget about that…
I’m in and already working on my draft rankings (although I expect to be there for the draft, barring the trial I have scheduled that week screwing my schedule up.)
I sent a PM to Wilson, is he the commish this year? Is there still room?
