Fantasy Baseball 2011

That’s a shame. That would have been a killer deal.

You’re telling me. Even then, it’s not like I’m giving up scrubs.

Another league and I have a slight personnel logjam. It’s a 8-man league, and I’m rocketing up the list of league leaders.

I have Alex Avila, Billy Butler, Ben Zobrist, Alex Rodriguez, Troy Tulowitzki, Mike Stanton, Carlos Gonzalez, Ryan Braun, Josh Hamilton, Andrew McCutchen, Hanley Ramirez, and Ryan Zimmerman (someone dropped Stanton and McCutchen earlier in the year in separate fits of impatience. Same with Zimmerman, who I picked up and have stashed on my DL).

I had Buster Posey in this league, but dropped him for Avila, who was a free agent. I’m thinking that Stanton is the best person to move, but don’t think he’ll get the best value back. I just traded for Braun (and Butler), so I think I’m looking at using McCutchen as trade bait. Honestly, I think I’m looking to make a move just for the sake of making a move, but it’s still kind of odd having someone that can put up some huge numbers at any time riding the pine (currently it’s Hanley Ramirez).
Also, it was an autodraft. Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

In a 12 team 5x5 two catcher league, am I crazy for thinking about dropping Buster Posey rather than keeping him on 1 of 2 dl spots the whole season? There are only 3 keepers.

Got anyone on the DL now? If no, then yeah, you’re crazy.

Aaron Hil was just dropped in my league. I know he is struggling but otherwise I haven’t paid attention to him since before the draft. Is he worth a pick up? I would probably be dropping Brian Roberts.

That is my problem. I’ve got Victorino on the DL as well as David Freese. I could drop Freese as I’ve been using Izturis as my 3b.

If we keep the league at 3 keepers for next year, then I"m going to have a tough decision as to who to keep. I’ve got Lincecum, Ethier, and Tulo as probably keepers for next year.

I’d probably drop him unless anyone else is interested in him. Even in a two catcher league Posey coming off a major injury is probably not a top 36 player, and that is what he needs to be in order to be worth keeping here, probably higher given the loss of the roster spot.

Then, hell, go with those three. Drop Posey.

So it’s been like a month since I have asked for help, I figure it’s time to come running to you guys again.

I just got offered Cole Hamels and Kelly Johnson for Matt Holliday and Dustin Ackley.

Ackley doesn’ mean anything to me, and I could use a batter like Johnson and Hamels will give me a totally dominant pitching staff with a couple of extra good pitchers to trade for, hopefully yet another quality bat. But I am worried I am not going to be able to get a good replacement for Holliday.

What do you all think?

My team as of today:

C Yadier Molina

1B Prince Fielder

2B Ryan Roberts

3B Mike Moustakas

SS Erick Aybar

OF Chris Young

OF Logan Morrison

OF Matt Holliday

Util Adam Jones

Util Justin Smoak

BN Coco Crisp

BN Brandon Belt

BN Dustin Ackley

DL Martín Prado

SP Clayton Kershaw

SP Tim Hudson

RP Drew Storen

RP Jordan Walden

P Aaron Crow

P Dan Haren

P Wandy Rodríguez

BN Hiroki Kuroda

BN Ryan Vogelsong

I like Ackley. I think he’s going to be batting first or second, and I think that Justin Smoak will end up getting better and better as the year progresses, with power numbers obviously increasing on the road.

Do you feel like you can give Holliday up? Is this a roto league or a head-to-head?

Do you need to get Coco’s SBs in your lineup every day that badly? I don’t see much use for Johnson over Coco, so this is Holliday for Hamels. It comes down to what categories you need. I’d ask for more.

It’s a roto league. Right now I am either in 3rd or 4th place in R HR RBI and middle of the pack in SB and AVG. On the pitching side I am middle of the pack in W ERA WHIP and in the lower third in K and SV.

Right now I am in 4th place overall and 24 points or so back from 1st. It’s a 13 team league.

The rational of the guy who proposed the trade was that Kershaw Harren Hamels would be strong enough together that my pitching would make up for the lack of Holliday. I don’t know if I can give up Holiday. I countered with Chris Young, but he said no.

I am debating just punting steals if I can get power to take the place, but yeah until I make up my mind about that, right now I need Coco’s steals.

Allow me to just kvetch that I’ve got more players on the DL than I do on the bench, including my 1st baseman (Pujols), both 2nd basemen (Lowrie and Sanchez), a starting pitcher (Bucholz) and my setup man (Soriano). And that’s just from my starting lineup.

What would you all think of the deal if I got him to swap Victor Martinez for Yadier Molina. That gets me a little bit more pop back on the deal. My outfield is weak, but my pitching and infield both get stronger.

I don’t know if he would do it, but he has indicated that he really wants Holiday badly. Martinez is the only other bat in his lineup I am even a little interested in.

I think I’d do that. Any other SP4 upgrade you could add to it? Maybe offer him a mid-tier closer for an upper-tier one?

AL-only league.

I’m in 4th place, 10.5 games out. Second place (2.5 games out) wants to trade me Danny Valencia, Nelson Cruz, Orlando Cabrera, Brian Fuentes, and Guillermo Morosco for my Michael Young, Shin Soo Choo, and Neftali Feliz.

Choo has been down the whole year, but starting to hit a little bit. Feliz is my only closer, but I’m down with abandoning the position entirely. I’m not wedded to Young either. I’m thinking I should swap Choo out.

I have Carlos Santana, Miguel Cabrera, Ian Kinsler, Mike Moustakas, Alexi Casilla, Carlos Quentin, Choo, Dustin Ackley, Jemile Weeks, Travis Hafner, Matt LaPorta, and Young as positional players with Josh Tomlin, Jeremy Hellickson, Jeff Francis, Feliz, Zach Britton,Jason Vargas, Josh Beckett, Kyle Gibson, and Andrew Miller pitching.

Oy. I am having buyers remorse already. Anyone want to make me feel better about this deal. I just traded:

A.J. Pierzynski (CWS - C)
Albert Pujols (StL - 1B)
Robinson Cano (NYY - 2B)
Hiroki Kuroda (LAD - SP)

for

Victor Martinez (Det - C,1B)
Miguel Cabrera (Det - 1B)
Danny Espinosa (Was - 2B)
Antonio Bastardo (Phi - RP)
Ian Kennedy (Ari - SP)

5x5 13 team league. I am in 4th place and 20 points out of first and have been for about a month. The top three players are churning then there is a 5 point gap, then me, then a 10 point gap. I am trying to make a jump up into that top tier. I lead the league in Wins but am middle of the pack in every other category but Saves and SB where I am in the lower third.

You’re upgrading your catcher, you’re upgrading your first baseman (so far). You’re getting hosed for Cano straight up, but looks a little better if you look at the bump up in saves, assuming Bastardo stays as the closer. Kennedy for Kuroda is a battle of upsides, depending on whichever you believe will have a better second half/if Kuroda gets traded to a contender. I think you’re fine.
This is more of a brag than anything else, but I want to upgrade my first baseman from Michael Morse, and it’s hard to trade in this league, because I think I’ve gone after the low-hanging fruit. I’m up by 12.5 in a rotisserie league.

Madson just got reactivated today, so Bastardo’s not a lock for any more saves at this point.
