Fantasy football general discussion 2010

How easy is it to update lineups on Yahoo fantasy with a blackberry? I’d like to be able to attend church at a more normal time on Sundays this season but don’t want to get stuck with inactive players in my lineup.

If it doesn’t work, in a pinch, sending an email to the league commish before kickoff will probably get it done. Something like “start everyone with the most projected points this week.”

I’m confused about the timing problem, though. When I was kid, we’d go to church around 10am. In Arizona, the early games kick off at 11am, I think. Is the idea that you’d rather sleep in and do your lineup in church instead of setting them in the morning before you leave? I’m confused about how FF makes you go to church at a less normal time…

The main service is at ten am. The early games kick off at ten. I set my lineups usually around 8 or so AZ time. But there are always the “will he or won’t he play” players. I remember from last year Boldin getting benched right before the Cards/Titans game.

I’m dropping out of some leagues this year. I’m going back to school, and I’m still going to be working full time, so more than 3-4 leagues is a bit ambitious. On the SDMB I’ll just be staying in HHM and the Dynasty league- can’t quit as the defending champ, can I?

I’ve been light into playing fantasy leagues in the past, but I’ve always enjoyed it and always managed to stick with it (Football, not so hard. Baseball, with daily participation, a bit tougher…).

If you get any freed up spots in a league or two, I’m game to join in.

“He’s too small.” Ignore all your fancy hoo-hah like statistics performance on the field. The last four years were a fluke.

I loved him coming out of college, and IIRC kept him one year in a FF league. Hell if I know why he gets the shaft.

Question: how long do auction drafts take? I’m interested in the idea, but I might have to drop out as I will be very, very busy around then, as I’m getting married on September 11 (yes, I know).

That’s the weird thing too. Everyone is on the “he’s just a small third down scatback who can’t carry the load” but he’s like MJD size and he’s never run like a scatback in college or the pros. He has a completely normal “feature back” running style. It’s just like at some point someone looked at him, saw he weighed 205-210 and says “uh he’s not 220+, put him in as a third down back” and no amount of evidence that it’s wrong will keep him from getting stereotyped that way.

He’s going to go to some other team, blow the hell up, and then have me both gloating (“HAHA! TOLD YOU IDIOTS!”) and then kicking myself in the face since he’ll be doing it for another team.

Our auction draft last year with 12 people on ESPN ran… 2 hours? 2:15? Not much longer than a standard draft. Edit: I think we drafted for 15 positions.

Not sure since this is yahoo’s first attempt at it. Hopefully it’ll be as well-developed as ESPN’s, which is around 15% longer than a normal draft. ( Just a guess based on past experience.) ESPN’s earlier version was horribly slow, around 50% longer than a normal draft, so here’s hoping yahoo doesn’t go through a similar learning curve.

The worst part about a long auction is that you’re always needed; no bathroom/cigarette/bong hit breaks without potentially missing out on a crucial piece of the puzzle.

That’s also the best part though, IMO - no long periods of boredom if you pick at the end of rounds, you’re always involved.

ESPN’s software had a pause feature. Maybe yahoo’s (which is basically a copy) has the same deal. We could take a 5 or 10 minute break in the middle and alleviate that issue.

Agreed, though I do enjoy cigarette breaks when I draft on the corners. I just mean that if it goes on way too long it can be too much, even with breaks. Hopefully they’ll have a good system in place.

Do we want to try a sample draft to see? Say, this Monday evening at 9pm eastern, open only to those who are available?

I’m cool with a mock auction just to get a feel for it and just for the sake of doing a mock. But I think certain features would only be available to the commissioner of leagues (adjusting the times available, pause, etc) and hence wouldn’t come into play during a public mock.

From the “what’s new” tab of yahoo FF

So we’ll definitely have a pause feature.

Looks like they’re making their draft kit, trends, etc. features that used to require premium/pay services free too. I wonder why they’re pushing so hard to make everything free - they provide a good service and I’m happy to pay them some money for it.

I was thinking more along the lines of creating a dummy league and drafting for real. I just checked, and live drafts can be done anytime; this Monday is legit. If I’m full-up on my yahoo leagues (which I may be) I’d create a dummy yahoo account for the test.

I’d be up for that. We’d need to fill it with actual members in that case and couldn’t just pick up random public players.

Yep, but I bet we could dig up four more doper FF players interesting in trying out the new yahoo auction feature. Maybe a week from Monday instead to give more people time to join in the fun?

I’m available Monday. Assuming by dummy league you mean a mock draft done using the real draft thingy.

He means making an actual league that you’d register for that would have its draft on Monday. If you didn’t want to use one of the 4 FF team slots on your main account, you could sign up using an alternate yahoo account. This way we’d have access to all the features of the draft and a guaranteed and private draft.

Oh. I’ll do it if it’s a half-assed league just to see how the new stuff works.

I’m probably in, too.

Alright, so let’s start talking draft times while the premium times are still up for grabs.

The He Hate Me keeper league drafts on Monday, Sep 6, 10:15EST. That’s the only date not available for the other leagues.

The rosters are cut down to 53 players on Saturday, September 4th. This is most relevant to the big league, since the league drafts so many players that it’s possible to draft someone who won’t end up being on a roster.

Preseason Week 3 is Aug 27-28. Most leagues like to draft at this date since it’s the preseason game where the starters get the most playing time, which is helpful both to evaluate potential draft picks and because injuries may happen in this game.

Regular season starts on Sep 9, so Sep 8 is the last practical draft day.

So ideally, we need to fit 4 drafts (All-pro, auction, big league, dynasty league) between aug 29 and sep 8, excluding Sep 6, , with the big league drafting on or after Sp 4. Sep 4-6 is memorial day weekend.

My initial proposal is to have the auction league draft on Tuesday Aug 31, the all pro league draft on Thursday Sep 2, the big league for Saturday, Sep 4 and the dynasty league (which will end up having a very short draft) for Sunday Sep 5.

Ellis Dee suggested a starting time of 10pm eastern to facilitate people enough time on the west coast to get home. I don’t have a problem with this, but speak up if you do. Drafts typically run in the 2 hour range.

If the big league drafts on saturday, the time would probably be something like 5pm or 6pm eastern. I realize it’s a holiday weekend, but I’m not sure how much of a problem that is. By mid/late afternoon saturday you should be at your destination, and who goes places now that don’t have computers and internet access? :stuck_out_tongue:

But if memorial day weekend is bad, we can switch the big league and dynasty league to happening on Tuesday and Wednesday Sep 7-8.

It’s important that everyone makes the draft, so if you predict problems with any of these dates, speak up now. We can adjust times and days - we could easily swap two leagues if it works better for people. I want to accomodate as many as people as possible.

I’m also going to propose we make the big league an auction draft this year (subject to debate), so that makes it even more important that everyone attend - the computer can autodraft but it’s so much more fun to have everyone there.

Speak up about preferences, when you definitely can’t make it, and what leagues you intend to participate in.
