…start a new one.
If we do the second league thing I’m volunteering to be comissioner of the newbie league.
Bet the overall champ comes from my league too!

First time I log on in a couple days, and hey look at that, less than 10 minutes after the new thread is born.
Just checking in to subscribe to the thread.
I’ll get into this league. Reserve a spot.
Never to early to worry about these things…
What the heck, I’ll jump in if you need another player.
I’ll probably finish dead last, but somebody has to.
Ahem. From the first thread:
Nyah. By all means, though, go ahead and start the league. As long as you acknowledge my superior volunteerism, you have my blessing.
Now, then- by my calculations here’s the league right now, contingent upon how many teams the original league ends up with:
Really Not the Original Commissioner, I mean All That Bright
Ellis Dee
Chitwood
Frank #2
SuperNova
SpasmicChaos
Who did I miss, if anyone?
If no one, we need four more, at least. Next four teams to sign up get my in-depth, real-time, pick by pick draft evaluation for free.
Yes, that means I make fun of you for taking backup quarterbacks and guys on IR.
TEAM NAME!
Fine, you can be comissioner. It’ll look less fishy when I win that way.
Damn it. I want you to be commissioner. I just want the credit.
In all seriousness, I’ll be glad to start it up, but I’d like to have two things first. One, a full league, obviously. Two, some kind of consensus on scoring would be nice. Stuff like negatives for fumbles and the relative point values for passing yards vs. rushing yards makes a big difference, so it would be nice to see what everybody thinks.
First things first, I guess. We need more players. No hurry, I guess, since it’s June and Yahoo hasn’t even opened up the game yet. Damn it.
I guess pretty frequently, it seems.
Should the scoring system be the same for both leagues? That way it becomes easier for trash-talking, stat comparison, and the eventual crowning of the Supreme Champion of the Galaxy. OTOH, different scoring systems allow for endless debates as to which league is better, ala baseball’s NL & AL.
From the previous thread it was mentioned that the basic Yahoo scoring was used, link here. I don’t really have a problem with it.
I do. I think 1 point/50 yards passing and 1 point/20 yards rushing are way too stingy, and it makes touchdowns (which are, let’s face it, more random than yardage) too valuable.
Ronin signing up for this league with my team the Ronin Roughnecks.
I have little idea what I’m doing, but I love Football.
As I mentioned in the other thread, I’m in for the second league. I look forward to battling Mr. Chitwood atop another SDMB Fantasy League.
-K.
Ah, I missed Kiros. It wasn’t like me to get it all right on the first try. Sorry about that. Kiros and Ronin make eight, if I can be trusted.
Enjoy that battle atop the league while you can, by the way, because I think the Chitwood Train’s on a one way trip to Crappy Town.
You’ve got what, a 15 point cushion over the half dozen of us in the second tier? I think you’re fine for the near future
Come on, two more people! Football doesn’t require nearly as much time input as baseball does on a fantasy level! You’ll have fun and be beat down by new and interesting people!
-K.
You live in Tallahassee. The Chitwood Train has clearly already reached crappytown
Well…
I got nothing. It’s a crappy town.
Two more sonsabitches sign up so I can make fun of where they live, please.
OK. Yahoo has officially opened football for business . I went ahead and started the league- league #21235, password: cecil - because I’m not a real patient individual, but we need to figure some things out. First, and most important, we need 2 more owners, because I started a 10 team league. I can change it to 8, but that would suck. Assuming that gets taken care of, we can move ahead to tweaking the parameters of the league. The options we can customize include (with my choices as of right now in bold):
Number of teams: 4 through 20; (10)
Type of scoring: total points or head to head
Maximum trades/ player acquisitions: 0-40 (no maximum)
Trade deadline? Yes/no
Playoffs? No playoffs, weeks 16 and 17 with four teams, weeks 15 and 16 with four teams, weeks 15, 16, and 17 with eight teams, weeks 14, 15, and 16 with eight teams.
Then there are the rosters. Right now I have it at 1 QB, 2 WR’s, 2 RB’s, 1 TE, 1 WR/RB spot, 1 kicker, and a defensive team as the active spots, plus 6 bench slots to use as you see fit. However, we could also go the route of having individual defensive players, which I personally think is a lot of fun, but in my experience is not generally a favorite of the masses, because people generally don’t follow defensive statistics so much (quick, who led the NFL in interceptions last year?). On all of these categories, of course, you guys make the calls, so speak up if you want it a certain way. The league will be set up the way the majority of the league wants it.
Finally, we have the scoring options. Many of them. Here are the categories with which we can our league’s scoring rules can deal:
Passing
Passing Touchdowns (Pass TD)
Interceptions (Int)
Passing Attempts (Pass Att)
Completions (Comp)
Incomplete Passes (Inc)
Sacks (Sack)
Passing Yards (Pass Yds)
Rushing
Rushing Touchdowns (Rush TD)
Rushing Attempts (Rush Att)
Rushing Yards (Rush Yds)
Receiving
Reception Touchdowns (Rec TD)
Receptions (Rec)
Reception Yards (Rec Yds)
Kick & Punt Returning
Return Touchdowns (Ret TD)
Return Yards (Ret Yds)
Offensive Fumble Return TD (Fum Ret TD)
Miscellaneous
2-Point Conversions (2-PT)
Fumbles (Fum)
Fumbles Lost (Fum Lost)
Kickers
Field Goal (FG)
Missed Field Goal (FGM)
Point After Attempt Made (PAT Made)
Point After Attempt Missed (PAT Miss)
Defense Team
Points Allowed (Pts Allow)
Sack (Sack)
Interception (Int)
Fumble Recovery (Fum Rec)
Touchdown (TD)
Safety (Safe)
Block Kick (Blk Kick)
Return Yards (Ret Yds)
Kickoff and Punt Return Touchdowns (Kick and Punt Ret TD)
Defense Players
Tackle Solo (Tack Solo)
Tackle Assist (Tack Ast)
Sack (Sack)
Interception (Int)
Fumble Force (Fum Force)
Fumble Recovery (Fum Rec)
Touchdown (TD)
Safety (Safe)
Pass Defended (Pass Def)
Block Kick (Blk Kick)
We can use a maximum of 15 of them on offense (I guess on defense we could use all of them?), and we get to pick how many points each category is worth, so stuff like Really’s rabid anti-touchdownism can be addressed. The offensive categories which Yahoo uses by default are in bold, and since I realize most other people don’t like to micromanage as much as I do, I’m keeping them for the moment, at least. Again, speak up if you have a preference on something, and I’ll fix it. I’ll go first- I think return yardage should count for something- not a whole lot, but a little. Maybe receptions, too, but that might be hard to implement without adjusting every other category.
Another note about the point totals per category- I reduced lost fumbles from -2 to -1 point. A fumble shouldn’t negate 40 rushing yards or 100 passing yards, in my opinion. Interceptions I kept at -2, an obvious contradiction, but there it is. As always, this isn’t set in stone unless nobody says anything.
To recap: first order of business, sign up for the league. You need a Yahoo ID, which is free, and you need to click on the get a team thing (or whatever it’s called), then Join Existing Custom or Public League, then Join a Custom League, then type in the league ID# 21235, and the password, cecil. You can review the league settings once you join by clicking on the “league settings” link on the right hand side of the league homepage.
Anybody else who wants into the league, feel free to join, but please post a message here that you’re doing so, just so everybody’s on the same page. We need at least two more, but if there’s more demand, that’s great.
One final note- we need to agree on a good time for a draft. Right now we’re set for Saturday, August 21st at 5:00 PM PDT, which I’m hoping translates to 8 o’clock normal person time. One last time, say it with me, if anybody wants a different time slot just say so- we have two months plus to get this thing done. Plenty of time, plenty of options. So, what say you?
It’s amazing how quickly I can spot my typos after I hit submit. You don’t want to know how many times I previewed, either.
What I meant was, we can pick our scoring rules from that list.
I like the idea of making receptions and return yards both have at least some influence. Don’t really care on defensive teams vs. players - have never done players before, but the only problem I can really imagine is the initial research it’d take before the draft to even have a clue on who to have and the relative worth. Agreed that teams would probably be simpler for all involved.
I’ll note that it’s probably easiest if we do the same thing here that we did for the baseball league - at least until we know everyone who is in the league is there (you can change it at any time I believe), having your SDMB username in your team name for the moment will make things easier to organize.
Best draft times for me are likely Mon/Wed/Thurs/Sun nights in the late afternoon to evening “normal person time”, but I can probably stretch to make a Saturday night if I have to. I’ve been known to have a social life on occasion, but I’ve also been known to do unreasonable things to make fantasy football drafts as necessary
-K.
How long does the draft take? Let’s assume 10 people all show up on time and are fully prepared. An hour? Two?
Saturday at 8:00pm is probably good, but I may not be available. Friday night is guaranteed bad. Sunday night, however, is almost always good. Maybe 7:30pm Sunday? If not Sunday, any weekday is okay, but that presents potential conflicts with west-coasters. If it must be a week night, I suggest Thursday, around 9:30pm. That would give west coasters time to get home from work, and I assume would be wrapped up by 11:00pm, which is not too late.
Also, do not conflict with any Giants or Jets preseason games. I will pull out if I have to miss a single minute of my beloved Big Blue. If I have to miss some Jets, I’ll do it, but I’ll whine like a little bitch the whole time.
