Fantasy football general discussion

Well, part of the nature of the league is that people would be starting players that had a projected score of 2 or 3 points. Scraping the bottom of the barrel would present a different challenge from the normal games. Doing 2 QBs with a 16 man league could be unsatisfactory… someone drafts a #3 QB and it means that someone goes without a second starter. But with RBs, TEs, and WRs, there are always depth players who have a shot at scoring some points.

Not that those positions are set in stone - I just picked them out of my ass as a proposal as to where to start the discussion.

I’d agree with the dissenters, but it depends. What RBs did you end up with? Can you post your team (and tell us about the league settings/size)?

I went ahead and renwed the two yahoo FF leagues I run. Invites should’ve gone out to everyone’s e-mail address they use for yahoo fantasy sports.

I set a date of Tuesday, Aug 25 at 9pm eastern for the all pro league draft. We can change it if we need to, but that’s about the time we usually draft. The auction league will have something seperate - we can do the ESPN thing again this year, hopefully without all the last minute scrambling.

I’ll start their threads a bit closer to the start of the season.

If we have open slots in a few weeks, I’ll recruit new people. For now, registration is only open to previous participants.

THe ninth round: one round for each illegit kid.

Oh, I’m back in for the auction league.

As a Bills fan, I’m curious as to how far T.O. will generally drop this year.

Definitely keep me notified of any opening leagues or openings in leagues.

Admittedly, I’ve let my baseball teams languish far too long after getting bit by the injury bug (regrettably too since most of my drafted and some early pick ups have panned out nicely). Though, I did manage a tight second place finish in basketball and also could of done better in hockey, but I lost Luongo for most of the time and then that damned five-move-max rule.

Football is a whole different beast though, and I’ll be sure not to let any of those roster get away from me at all.

It’s been a heck of an off-season so far and I’m beyond ready for some football!

No Use For A Name is in.

Hopefully I can improve from a very dreadful past 3 seasons.

Yahoo has the ability to assign draft order this year. I don’t know if that was available in the past, but I don’t remember it.

Should we (for the all pro league) consider setting the draft order by some criteria? Maybe last year’s standings or something? Or, if not, we could use some method of random number generation so we can get our draft order now instead a half hour before the draft… that way you have more time to prepare for your specific draft slot.

I didn’t get Brees in the mock draft. Me picking Fitz as the 1st pick messed everything up. I ended with my second choice, Rivers.

Derrick Ward and Willie Parker. The mock drafts use the standard ESPN settings, 12 teams and standard scoring.

Fitz
Rivers
Steve Smith
Ward
Parker
Hines Ward
Winslow
Steve Breaston
Fred Taylor
Trent Edwards
Tim Hightower
Laurence Maroney
Matt Leinart
Chargers D/ST
Kris Brown K

The NFL season starts later this year; August 25th is the day after the second week of preseason, meaning the pivotal third week – where most of the starter injuries happen – would be after the draft.

I’d recommend Monday, August 31st or Tuesday, September 8th to minimize the impact of post-draft preseason injuries. 9:00pm EDT is fine by me, though it may be a tough start time for west coasters.

It’s always been available, but it doesn’t get enabled until all the managers sign up. I have no problem with using a predetermined order regardless of criteria. (I’m happy drafting first, last, or anywhere in between.) In fact, I vote we do it. Last year’s performance is probably the best way to go – last picks first, winner picks last – but if we want to use a truly random order Jimmy Chitwood’s idea (from years ago; I can dig it up as needed) is the way to go.

The really cool feature they added last year was supporting draft pick trades. For several years in the keeper league I had to handle this manually, which was quite a PITA. The way it is now, the commish can go in and swap any two picks, meaning you can reflect trades. It works quite nicely.

I’m a big fan of pre-draft trading. If we’re interested at all, I can post the fantasy draft pick value chart to the league thread. It’s like the NFL draft pick value chart, except the values are based on fantasy drafts instead of real NFL drafts. This lets you propose/accept “even” trades. Obviously, “even” isn’t a hard science, but after using it for the past several years it has worked pretty well for the keeper league.

Would seem strange to have past results affect future drafts in a non-keeper league. To me, at least. As far as setting a draft order now, I wouldn’t be against it, it sure would save me time mock drafting each position. Should we make a decision before we even know if everyone is back for another season?

I’m leaning towards random. It’s not like the real NFL draft where the worst team in the league still has pretty much the same roster the next year and therefore need the help most - every season is a fresh start and random seems more fair. Would you mind finding his method? I’m not sure what the best terms to search for would be.

Huh, I didn’t notice this feature. Yeah, we can get our draft order a week+ ahead of the draft and work with this.

Sure, sounds good.

Hopefully we’ll know if everyone is back within a week or two. We can set the draft order with plenty of time still available for the draft.

On yahoo’s “what’s new” page there’s:

Try Acquisition Budgets for a fairer waiver claims process
Place blind bids on waived players-- highest bid wins!
Choose Sunday-Tuesday or first game-Tuesday waiver claim periods
Does the “Choose Sunday-Tuesday or first game-Tuesday” mean it automatically does the system we’ve been manually using, whereby free agents go on waivers? If so, I’d definitely like to use this system. An automatic free agents->waivers system with auction waiver support sounds good.

I’m hopeful, but it sounds like it might have the same flaw as the roster locking system where the first game to kick off for the week puts everyone in the league on waivers, meaning you’d have to make your MNF decisions on Sunday morning or, later in the season, Thursday evening. That was my primary motivation in coming up with an alternative to the roster locking solution in the first place. I’ll poke around when I have some time to see what the free options are; by all means post here if you find one that sounds good.

I suspect the keeper league will (justifiably) resist change, but the All-Pro and auction leagues could try out the new stuff. I think using an auction-style waiver wire in the auction league is about as much of a no-brainer as you’ll find.

I found Jimmy’s draft order idea, though it wasn’t easy. It was impervious to logical search terms like “random”, “draft” and “order”. “Sequence”?! C’mon, Jimmy, yer killin me! heh.

[post=8828391]How do I (randomly and fairly) determine my FF league’s draft order?[/post]

So simple and so effective. The two players first send you their respective lists via PM or email, then you post the results along with the original lists. That way the two players can see their original lists, preventing any possibility of tampering by a shady commish. (Speaking generally; not that you’re shady.)

To perfect it, you’d contact the two submitters privately so they wouldn’t know who the other was and therefore couldn’t collude with each other. You’d also want to only ask those two players for lists. (A shady commish could gather up a half dozen draft orders in private and only post the most favorable one.)

And how about the memory on me, eh? Two years ago and not only did I remember the posted idea, but also who posted it.

I’d prefer the random draft order option.

Well, we could handle this by mutually agreed on rules. As in, if the guy hasn’t played their game yet, you can add them - but if they have, wait till the waiver system takes over and put in your bid then. Whatever the weaknesses in the system, we can work around them, since we’re all on friendly mutually agreeable terms.

Acquisition Budgets sound like fun.
