Fantasy football general discussion

It sounds like the new and improved statracker program may have a chatroom type component. I’m not sure who’s home looking at stat tracker during the games, but that could be fun. If that’s integrated to the iphone app, I will be taunting mercilessly from the sports bar.

I started a recruitment thread and yahoo league for the 20 man league we discussed. If anyone wants to get in, the details are here:

Has anyone ever participated in a defensive league? Not just a league with IDP available, but a league that’s entirely made up of defensive players?

Yahoo added a few defensive positions this year, so rather than just being DL/LB/DB you have DT, DE, LB, CB, S available. We could have a fantasy league that consisted only of a real starting defense - 2 DTs, 2 DEs, 3 LBs, 2 CBs, and 2 S. Does this sound interesting to anyone?

The description for the weekly waiver list:

Good, this is the system I was hoping for. I was hoping it would be a little more nuanced, and there would be a setting for [whenever the player’s game starts till tuesday], but there isn’t. I suggest we use the Sunday morning->Tuesday system with the caveat that no one is allowed to pick up a player from a Thursday or Saturday night game before the waiver period on Sunday. Waiver claims can be made for those players on Sunday when all players go on waivers.

As commish, however you want to handle it is fine. For the keeper league I’ll be sticking with the same system as last year because the locking rosters system is just too annoying, IMO. Nothing is more annoying than when your star RB/WR/QB’s playing status for MNF won’t be determined until Monday afternoon and you have to make the decision Sunday morning.

Plus, with Thursday games for half the season it’s going to involve some amount of the honor system anyway. Why not go whole hog and reap all the benefits instead of going halfway, missing out on key (MNF) benefits while still needing to manually oversee the honor system for Thursday games anyway?

I work (flexibly) at night so having to be around on Tuesday night at 9pm (PST) can be inconvenient sometimes.

This may not be an issue with people who’ve used our system before, but we usually have some sort of confusion about the details of how the system works in the first few weeks. People will grab free agents and it’ll have to be reverted, or they don’t send their waiver requests in a particular order or it’s worded ambiguously, etc. This is simpler, automated, and allows us to give their auction waiver system a try.

I’d strongly prefer it if they had an option for not putting a player on waivers until 5 minutes before their game time - they already have this mechanism for pick 'em leagues, so I’m not sure why they didn’t implement it here.

I’m open to doing it the same way we did it last year if there’s a strong preference for that.

I’ve always sort of equated IDP with being that guy betting on the Don’t Pass line in blackjack. How does a DT even really score? They rarely rack up big numbers of sacks or tackles, and while it’s comical when they make an INT, it’s rarer than a hen’s tooth.

Don’t Pass? Do you mean Craps? The Don’t Pass in Craps is the equivalent to drafting a franchise RB in FF. I love the idea behind the analogy, though. IDP is more like C&E (Craps & Eleven (Yo)) or any other prop bets. Great when they hit, but hitting is rare and you’ll go broke if you try to make them your bread and butter.

I sent out PMs to everyone who hasn’t signed up for the All Pro and Auction leagues from last year with one exception. Chuck (Overly Sentimental), IIRC, was someone’s roomate, not an SDMBer. But I can’t recall whose roomate he was. Whoever it was - can you get ahold of him and see if he wants his spot back this year?

This very long ESPN article is quite interesting. He doesn’t like Phillip Rivers as a fantasy QB

…A healthy defense this year means fewer shootouts, and a healthy Tomlinson means he’s getting the rock at the goal line. I’d much rather have Tony Romo a little later…

While ideally I’d draft Brees, Rivers has been one of the other QB’s I’d strongly consider if Brees is gone. What if P. Manning, Brady, and Brees are all gone? I don’t trust Warner to stay healthy. Take a chance on Romo over Rivers? My gut says no.

If anyone knows how to contact those who haven’t checked in yet to the All Pro and Auction leagues, please do. I sent out e-mail invites and PMs on the board and we’re still missing 3 people from each league. I’ll give it another 10 or 12 days or so before I start looking into filling any open spots.

We just did our draft order and I got the 5th pick (10 team league 50/50 1/4 a ppr). I fucking HATE the 5th pick. Convince me why I’m wrong here, I was really hoping for the 7th or later.

What’s the 50/50 part mean?
Has anyone ever played in an efficiency league or have an example of the scoring system of one? I’d be interested to know more about them, maybe give one a try this year.

I’ve opened the All-pro league’s thread for this year.

I devised a system for one, and commished it for a couple of years. The idea was that the basis of the scoring would be identical to that of a standard FF league, but that players would essentially get either a bonus or a penalty for their achievement relative to league average in the areas of completion percentage, yards per attempt, yards per rush, and FG accuracy (you can do yards per reception, but that stat typically doesn’t match up too well with the best WRs in the league).

You do this by lowering the number of yards gained to earn a point, while at the same time instituting a penalty for rushes and pass attempts such that a player whose YPR and YPA are exactly league average won’t be affected by the system. (For Comp%, you give a separate penalty for incompletions, and a bonus for completions, the relative proportions of which set, again, so that league average Comp% yields no difference). Depending on how much you lower the required yards per point (or how big the bonus/penalty discrepancy is for completions/incompletions), the bonus system can be anything from an interesting diversion to a main focus of the league.

You can see examples of the scoring system here and here (let me know if Yahoo won’t display these). As you can see, in the second league the YPA modifier was so large that even completed passes yielded an overal penalty despite the Comp% bonus attained).

In my experience, the effect on RBs and Kickers was moderate at most. The main difference was in separating the wheat from the chaff at the QB position – the Aaron Brooks type (inefficient, but threw the ball a ton and hence was a good fantasy QB) was severely devalued in these leagues. In general, it became harder to get by with the 10th QB off the boards, because the superstars were getting so many bonus points. I think this was a good change, though others may disagree.
The maximum number of Yahoo teams per person is 4, right? If there’s interest, maybe I’ll revive the league.

I can’t view those pages, as it requires you to be in the league.

The maximum per account is 4, yes. If you do revive the league, I’d be interested.

My preference would be to have the efficiency stats to have a heavy weighting - after all, that’s the primary thing that’s interesting about the league, so it should be the biggest factor and make you think about how to draft differently vs a conventional league.

Ok, I’ll copy and paste them now. Give me a minute for formatting.

Ok, I suck at formatting. Hopefully it’s not too hard to read.

As the commissioner, I instituted my long-advocated-for policy that all fumbles should be penalized equally. I also made it a point to penalize QBs for taking sacks, and had the larger swings for Defensive Points Allowed that are apparently standard for SDMB leagues.

Any ideas for improvement? I suppose we could toy with an interception rate modifier. Also, the penalties for missed FGs are just arbitrary; as I recall, I had trouble coming up with a statistical basis for their value (the points for made FGs are set so that, aside from the penalties, the expected value of all FG attempts is the same).

approx. 50% yardage and 50% TD in awarding pts

Missed the edit:

Both leagues were Points Per Reception leagues, but after the first year I discontinued the YPR modifier. In the second year we also expanded from 3 starting WR slots to 4. The idea was that since QB was becoming a more important position, and RB was already important, we should do something to make WRs more of a priority as well. I don’t recall how well the changes worked.
