Fantasy football general discussion

Other random ideas for FF leagues I’ve had:

A league where the draft occurs somewhere into the season. Maybe after week 4 or 6. Every year there are surprises - big injuries, surprise players… the draft board after a few weeks into the season is very different from the pre-season board, and it could be interesting to have that.

A league that redrafts every X weeks. I don’t know if any sites would have the software to support it, but every say 4 weeks, or even 1 or 2 weeks (for people who really love the drafting process) could be interesting. Any sites out there that give you this ability?

A league where you score during the actual NFL playoffs. This one would have to be done manually and would have to have some sort of transaction restrictions or roster locking - but essentially the fantasy season wouldn’t end in week 16 or 17 - but through the superbowl. So you’d factor in a player’s teams likeliness to go into the playoffs before you drafted or picked him up. Only the players who actually played that week would score for you. It’d be a very weird game, but potentially interesting if we could work out a ruleset.

So I figured up an ESPN mock auction draft to see how their software is this year. I’m the lead bigger on Adrian Peterson and $45 and I’m thinking “damn, I’m getting a deal here” when I won it.

And the next pick up: Adrian Peterson. A bidding war breaks out.

Yep, I bid 1/4th my money for the scrub that plays for Chicago.

Scrub that plays for Chicago… hm… you’ll have to elaborate. Do they have anything else?

I’ve always wanted to do a playoff redraft league. The idea is the fantasy regular season goes from week 1 to 16, then the league gets a bye. The players who make the fantasy playoffs then do a new draft after week 17, where the pool of players is limited to only the 8 teams in the playoffs that week. Each playoff week starts with a new redraft from only the remaining NFL teams.

This would mirror the NFL even more in that losing a fantasy playoff game ends your season. No consolation bowl, since you wouldn’t want losers swiping your picks in the redraft the following week. Redraft order would naturally be based on playoff seeding.

If it really is four leagues, I’d rejoin the VarlosZ efficiency league. (Looking back at my rosters in those leagues is total nostalgia. Tiki Barber, Curtis Martin, Plaxico Burress, Jeremy Shockey? heh.)

Are we doing a salary cap league this year?

Yes, but it won’t affect your regular FF slots. It’s a seperate game, like pick 'em and survival.

Just wanted to point out that, of the 50 threads on the first page of this forum, 4 are about fantasy football and 4 are about the NFL, while the first Sunday of the regular season is still 6 full weeks away.

17 of which were started by me :stuck_out_tongue:

I keep busy on here during football season.

…and there probably still isn’t enough discussion going on!

Can you leave a yahoo league in mid-season and not have it count against your 4 team maximum? If we wanted to do a redraft league, we could play 4 (or however many) weeks, write down the scores, abandon and delete it, start a new league (with a new draft) and at the end of the year seed the playoffs according to the accumulated scores across all leagues.

This idea is interesting to me because I love doing the drafts, and running a league like this would give us more shots at drafting.

I’d be willing to give it a shot instead of the efficiency league. However, I would request that we keep the league to 10 or fewer owners with a very small roster; maybe 12 spots total, including bench. That way the drafts wouldn’t be so long as to be unreasonable to do every 4 weeks.

That seems reasonable. It would also work well with the playoff redraft idea if we wanted to do it that way, although we’d have to do that manually since I’d imagine no sites still allow drafting after the regular season.

I’d be so totally down with that. Does any fantasy site tally playoff fantasy points?

With only 8 NFL teams to worry about it wouldn’t be a huge deal even if I had to sit down and track eveything manually from nfl.com game books. Figure a 10-man league, 4 fantasy playoff teams, the idea of a live draft with 4 teams of 12 players isn’t unthinkable just ot do in-thread. And then calculating the performance of 48 players wouldn’t be too hard. The championship week would only be half that, so that would be even easier.

I love the idea of a redraft league, but wouldn’t we have hosting problems? In years past Yahoo has cut off new league creation around the midpoint in the season, I’m pretty sure. Does anyone know what the deal is at ESPN?

If it is feasible and we want to cut down on roster sizes, I’d kinda like to try having a lone starting RB slot (with no RB/WR flex position); the 2-RB setup is pretty unrealistic, and also the reason that RBs are so ridiculously important in FF. I’ve always wanted to try a league where that isn’t the case.

Anyway, I don’t anticipate not being around, but if a redraft league gets off the ground and I don’t see it at first, please reserve me a slot.

Yes.

Really?

Why not just do a draft over at Mock Draft Central mid-season and have the commish plug in the rosters?

[Looks at the site for the first time. . .]

I considered something like that. I few issues:

– Manually inputting the draft three times would be a pretty big hassle. I suppose we could rotate the responsibility so no one has to do it more than once.

– Does MDC run drafts all through the entire season and into the playoffs?

– It’s strictly a pay site, correct? Does one payment allow us to draft as many times as we want? Because I don’t mind spending $24 (spread out among several owners) to get the league working for a year, but I would mind spending $72 if we had to pay for each new draft, you know?

I just want to give everyone a heads-up that I plan on doing another Prop Bet Extravaganza this year (probably without the cash prizes). Hopefully I’ll have the thread up within a week or so. If anyone has ideas for interesting wagers, feel free to post them here (I’ll come up with the odds). I’m particularly looking for bets you won’t find at any Vegas or online sports book.
(And we’re now up to 9 Fantasy/NFL threads on the front page.)

I don’t use credit cards over the internet, so count me out if we go with pay sites.

The hassle of the commish manually entering the rosters would be mitigated by having few owners and small rosters. It’s really not all that hard to do it; I remember doing it once (though I can’t for the life of me remember why I did it) and it’s a million times easier than the in-season Add/Drop feature.

Love the idea of only one RB. I just threw 12 out there as a number; looking at it more closely, what do you guys think the mini-roster should look like? No need for it to be exactly 12. I like the idea of a starting seven: QB, RB, WR, WR, TE, K, DEF. What would be a good size bench? I figure either 3, 4, or 5, and I would lean toward 3 to keep things interesting, especially the waiver wire.

The other bonus would be with only 10 players on the roster, the league could handle a couple extra owners. NOTE: Re-drafting in-thread isn’t possible unless ALL owners show up since there would be no auto-draft capability.

Man, it’s a crazy world in which we live when people are pointing out Matt Forte as an elite fantasy back. I understand why, but man, it changes when you stop paying as much attention for a year.

I started the auction league’s thread.

Maybe I should start up the salary cap and pick 'em/survival threads and we can have an all-NFL game room.
