I recently asked for some background info on The Office so I could decide which supporting character to pick up for Fantasy Teevee. As I mentioned in the other thread, there’s already an SDMB League that’s been going on for over a year now (play goes in eight-week seasons, fall through spring). Justin_Bailey indicated he might be interested in playing – if anyone else were interested, we could start a second Doper league (which I could pack with newbies – I’m in the process of finishing the second season this year in a totally ignominious and very distant last place with the people in the first league).
If you’re interested, post here, and also email me at twickster47 at yahoo dot com.
C’mon, you might as well put all that TV time to good use – it’s a lot of fun.
Yes, it is a lot of fun. I’ve been playing with twickster, Jelaza, and jmizzou for several seasons and I like it a lot. If twickster gets more than 2 people who want to play, we could definitely have another league going, maybe mix things up in our current league (I don’t like getting my ass kicked any more than you do, twicks). You don’t even have to watch a lot of TV to play, as long as you do a little research into what’s coming up in the shows you have. So check it out!
Yay, singular1! Who’da thunk this would be the way we’d be karmically fated to be together? (There’s lots of nice quirk points associated with some of the reality shows, BTW – it definitely adds a little to watching tribal council when you’re playing “Guy Speaks in Tribal Council” and there’s a nice juicy meltdown happening. OTOH, playing “Fear Factor – Eats” for the first two weeks after the show returned was part of the reason I’m getting stomped so badly. Sigh.)
As I said, anyone who’s interested, email me – obviously, I need email addresses to set up the league.
Yay! This game is so fun! You won’t be disappointed! (Well, not if it strikes you as amusing – I have somewhere between “a lot of friends” and “every single person I know” who find my delight in it quite bizarre. )
twickster, I’m still in, but my home hookup works as well as Colin’s ox! I can get a few thingsa done, and then it craps on my shoe, so I’ll have to get back to you you tomorrow from my quicker work ( ) connection, where I can bitch at my dialup and further answer email and check your link.
No prob, singular1 – I was going to bump this again Tuesday morning to get the workweek crowd a chance – set up the league Tuesday night, then as long as everyone confirms they’re in (and – optional – sets a draft card) before Thursday, we can start playing a week from today.
So – we’re still looking for recruits – come one, come all; the more, the merrier and all that …
Twickster, I am completely baffled by this thing. I just looked at our league, and I honestly don’t understand what I’m supposed to do - especially since I only watch four of the programs on my list! Can you help a noobie out?
I’ll email you tonight – but will assure you that the fact that you don’t watch the shows doesn’t matter.
Look at the last column – points – on the people you’re considering. You want to pick people and quirks who will score you lots of points. The numbers given are, I believe, season averages, and a good starting place. On any given week, a character may be more or less visible than usual, but don’t worry about that now. Right now try to get a good balance across the week – it doesn’t matter if you win more points overall during a week because you have one socko night if the other person wins more nights than you do.
This will be easier to explain if I’m looking at lineups, and I really am supposed to be working right now – as I said, I’ll email you tonight. Do you have IM? That would actually be easiest of all, since we could both be looking at the same thing at the same time – I’m twickster47 on Yahoo, and also have an MSN acct. in my real name – let me know, and we can set up a time.
Don’t worry – it takes a while to figure out (it did for me anyway), but it’s a hoot and a half once you do.
I wish I did have IM, but I hardly ever turn on the computer at home (I sit in front of one for 11 hours straight every day, so I have to flop and veg out on the TV or read a book), and my work computer is a Single Glass setup for CATIA (3d modeling)- no IM possible. Hell, I can’t even use realplayer or any of those video things on it, and there’s no sound, just a real basic Windows setup. But I’ll try and figure it out on my lunch or when I sneak-surfing, so I imagine I’ll figure it out eventually. Did you pick out the lineup under my name? I was surprised to see that there were shows already picked for me - that’s where the confusion really started.
Okay, the draft I was talking about in my various messages was where you can specifically request certain characters or quirks – when I closed the draft last night, the computer at the site assigned “players” to all four of us through some algorithm – according to preferences, for those who expressed them, and then after that randomly assigned, usually in order of average score. (In other words, the randomly assigned players aren’t supposed to be the duds.)
You have to pick three leads, four supportings, and two quirks, arranged no more than two a night across the five-night week. If you have too many of one group (too many leads, for instance), you can drop those and pick up players you do need (more supportings, probably) with the “pick up characters” thingie. (You can also keep three people on the bench – people you don’t want to play this week [because their show is off, or because a different character will be the primary story], but who you want to hold on to, either to save for the future or to prevent another player from picking them up.)
There’s a place on the page to look at all transactions – if you review what I did last night, it tells you the players I dropped and who I picked up – if you then look at my lineup, you can see how I tried to balance my strength across the week. (Rubystreak, who I’m playing next week, likes to keep her lineup secret until the last possible second, which is why her entire roster is on the bench at this point.)
Okay – specifically, I got too many quirks assigned in the draft, so I was dropping those; then I picked up Marge Simpson, but realized I already had as many Sunday players as I could use; after that I was trying to plug in holes by picking up supporting characters on the nights where I still had slots.
Looking at your lineup – the icon in the far right column of your “set lineup” box has a preview of what’s going to happen on the show next week, so you can see which specific characters will do better or worse than usual. (You can also look ahead at TV Guide for similar info.)
It doesn’t seem like Peter is your best choice for a lead on Sunday night; move him to the bench. Also move both your George Lopez characters to the bench, since that show isn’t on next week. Okay, you’ve got a lead for Wednesday already on your roster; move her in. So you need another lead somewhere, and another supporting somewhere. Without messing with the rest of your lineup, you have a spot on Sunday and a spot on Thursday. You do have a supporting for Thursday; you can move her in. You still need one more supporting; you will have to drop someone on the bench (or someone you’re playing) in order to pick one up.
Okay – my boss just walked by – let me know if you need more tips from here…
Oh, sweetie, thank you so much! (I would’ve answered sooner, but my Windows screen froze up while I was on another application). I really appreciate it, but I wasn’t asking you to do the work for me - I have lunch in about an hour, and I was going to study it instead of playing sodoku. I’ll still spend lunch studying it, though, and incorporating your suggestions, but I hope you didn’t think I was asking to to completely blow off work and hold my hand. Sorry if I made you think that - watch out for that boss! (Mine’s hung over and at home, since he’s Texan, so that’s why I can keep posting so easily to you!)
You’re welcome! I definitely didn’t do your whole lineup – I was just letting you know how to get started. You’ll probably want to add and drop some characters now (do you really want two characters from George Lopez?), and each week as the season goes on. When we first started playing, we were all total newbies, and I think I was slower to figure out the basics than some of the others, since I had never played any fantasy games (baseball or whatever). All I’m doing here is giving you an overview of stuff that took me a couple of weeks to work out for myself.
Because I do want you to enjoy the game – so you’ll keep playing, and I can continue to nurse my bad Fantasy Teevee habit without having to recruit new players several times a year…
This isn’t a casual game, is it?!?!? I’m actually going to have to turn on the old home 'puter and finsh this - I just blew my whole lunch hour, and hardly got anything done! Assuming I’m not working OT this weekend, I’ll take a long coffee break and sort this out Saturday, I think.
And thanks again - I did get rid of those Lopez folks, anyways…
Once you know what you’re doing, it takes less than an hour a week – unless you’re crazy competitive (which, it turns out, I’m not … thank god) – mostly for doing research on the following week’s episodes to fill in around your usual players.
