Since both cars are gone from Lester’s driveway after Malvo leaves, it appears as if Malvo let the used car salesman go. Which was nice of him.
I love snow on film so I notice it more than most people, I guess. That’s why the fake snow seen during a driving scene (which looked like cut up bits of white cardboard) in an earlier episode stood out to me and took me out of the reality of the shots. The falling snow in this episode, when Gus finds Malvo’s hideout was real and looked great. Trouble is, as soon as Gus got out of his car, it suddenly wasn’t snowing anymore. I know you can’t direct the weather, but a little CGI snow when Gus was sneaking up to the hideout would have helped.
Gus shot and killed Malvo because he was an animal, that’s what he meant by solving the riddle. The story arc is civilized people realizing there are human beings who are not that at all.
Fine, but she doesn’t follow that up at all when Molly leaves, no “uh, Hun, we just told a load of whoppers to a police officer. What really happened in dat elevator?” Nope, she just goes to make the pea soup.
I’m curious what you think Gus would have told the police when they arrived and saw Malvo dead. How would he have explained shooting him 5 times?
I have no idea what Gus would have said and I really don’t care that Gus shot him in the way he did. This is just idle curiosity. What would have been a reasonable explanation as to why Gus shot Malvo 5 times? He had a few days to think about it before he shot Malvo. So he should have been able to come up with a reasonable explanation.
Would Gus have said that Malvo had a gun and pointed it at Gus and that is when Gus opened fire? Would that have been an explanation that was good enough?
I’d also be curious what you think the odds are that Lester’s brother would be released and how long that could take?
In some states, the legislatures don’t like to release anyone from jail once they are convicted because it is akin to admitting they were wrong and opens the door to a huge financial lawsuit for false imprisonment.
I’m interested in Sitnam’s opinion due to some of the good posts he has made in the past. But I’d also be interested to hear anyone else who has an opinion.
I liked how Gus killed Malvo. He was a psychopathic serial killer that needed to be put down, and I don’t have a problem with it. I would have had Malvo ask him if he figured out about the green, and then have Gus shoot him without saying anything. I believe it was Machiavelli in The Prince who said you don’t talk, you just kill.
She doesn’t, you’re right, to fanwank, she worshiped the ground he walked on and just did whatever he asked without asking any questions, just like she hightailed it out of Vegas without saying “Lester, WTF is going on” (or if she didn’t she didn’t pester him for an answer). She’s the polar opposite of his first wife.
How about this:
I was driving over to the BPD to see Molly when I saw a man that appeared to be Lorne Malvo. I recognized him from my time with Fargo PD though he looked different. I wasn’t sure it was him and didn’t want to bother BPD since I knew they were busy, I had a revolver with me so I went to check it out. Upon getting near the door, he opened it, pointed a gun at me and I shot him. He took a few steps back and fell to the couch, I shot him 4 more times to be sure there he was no more of a threat to my safety. I moved a gun and knife away from his body and called BPD who ID’d him as Lorne Malvo.
Yes. Under the circumstances, I’d be very surprised if anyone would challenge Gus about killing Malvo in that way or in any way in response to anything he said.
But the BPD is full of some very silly police people. Remember when Gary Valentine asked Molly if it wasn’t right to use the word “triangle” when she said the police would “circle” Malvo? That had to be one of the dumbest things a police constable could ever say. Wow! Talk about dumb!
Molly just got this very strange expression on her face and just ignored him. But that was really very wild.
Up until Lorne Malvo showed up, all they had to deal with was shoplifters and punks smoking weed under the bleachers at the local high school. A bunch of deputies debating the difference between spreading out in a circle or a triangle is exactly the force that Bill wanted, he practically said as much and as the world is changing he’s handing the reigns over to Molly.
They might be dumb, but it’s a small town and these are the people that were up for the job. Also, it’s not even that they’re dumb, it’s more that they don’t know how to take a serious case seriously, they’ve never had to. They’re cracking jokes while Molly’s trying to brief them on how to not die.
Was Gus right to kill Malvo? Yes. Im pretty sure we was in fear of his life. Why do I think this? Because *I *was in fear of Gus’s life. If I sitting in my own home was fearful then I assume Gus was too. Do we know for sure Gus did not plant a gun afterwards?
Someone else said earlier that Malvo “coming back to life” was one of the scariest things they have seen on TV recently. I agree.
I thought he was going to smile and get up from the couch and kill Gus! Very scary indeed.
When Malvo was working on his leg and the wolf was outside I was kind of hoping he’d pass out and the wolf would get in and kill him. Or he’d kill the wolf.
Did anyone catch when Molly was talking to Leaster and she said something about Malvo maybe not being a man?
Very much so…not to take anything away from the show as a whole.
Others are referring to suspense that I just didn’t feel…perhaps I shouldn’t wake up early to watch it still half asleep.
I almost missed that it was an animal trap that broke Malvo’s leg…I thought he stepped on the award. Did we see (and did I miss) him pulling it out of the box?
Lester was shown going for the box with Chaz’ gear stored in his basement. He was seen opening up the box but not taking out the trap. The trap was seen in the box last episode.
I agree that the finale was good but still a bit of an anticlimax after so many memorable and surprising moments throughout the season.
One thing no one has commented on is Molly’s dad’s comments about what happened in 1979, with weird hinds of the supernatural. I thought that was fascinating.
Gus was absolutely morally in the right to kill Malvo. He was in fear not for his own life but for the life of his wife and unborn child. He knew that Malvo left a trail of collateral dead bodies behind him and his wife was the officer in charge of the hunt for the man. I would have lost all respect for Gus if he HADN’T killed Malvo under those circumstances. The man had already been in police custody once and gotten off clean and had twisted the FBI around his little finger.
Legally? That depends. If this had happened in Minneapolis, he would have been in trouble. Bemidji? Not so much. You can get away with a lot in a small town like that, particularly if your wife is about to be the chief of police.
