Honestly, I think he grew a spine, I think he’s looking for the respect of his peers*, but more than anything, I think he wanted a little big of revenge for the other night (and to symbolically protect his daughter), but more than anything, I think he’s got a huge crush on Molly and he knew that if he brought in Malvo it would impress her.
*He’s a rookie isn’t he. I was under the impression that that’s the biggest reason he’s the ‘joke’ of the force, just because he’s the newest member.
Well, he had a drivers license in the name Peterson, and the new police chief drove over to create interference on his behalf.
It wasn’t clear who they contacted but I guess either the police in this other town is also onside or they relied on a website for a photo/contact details of the church.
Mainly though, I think he knew he could rely on the new police chief.
Does anyone think that the Earnest Policeman’s (sorry, I’m terrible with character names) daughter is in danger now? When Malvo was pulled over, he basically openly said he’d harm her if Earnest Policeman turned him in - and the whole “shades of green” predator speech seems to reinforce that. On the other hand, kidnapping/killing her would seriously drain viewer’s sympathy for Malvo, so it might not happen. Even so, if I was the cop I’d send her to some far-off grandparent’s house right about now . . .
They already killed the dog, and I can’t see the show going that dark [harming the daughter]. It’s a dark comedy, it’s not supposed to be quite that, um, heavy. Also, we’re coming right off the heels of Dexter and I don’t think they’d want to be compared to that. Which, by the way, Colin Hanks/Gus Grimley/Earnest Poliman was in for a season.
Killing a ‘bad’ guy or someone who ‘deserves’ it is one thing. That’s why they made it really clear to the audience that Sam not only was a bully back in high school but he was still a real piece of shit to this day. Killing an innocent kid would really take the show in a whole different direction. It wouldn’t be funny anymore. I don’t know who the writers are, but I’d be surprised if the have the chops to make kidnapping or killing her funny. OTOH, telling Sam Hess’ wife that Sam was dead while one of this kids was beating the other one with a golf club…that was funny. Having Molly run out there and tackle him just made it even better.
