I agree 100%, but for me, it’s also the notion expressed by some here that this relationship is defensible on some level, just because they seem happy enough, they’re ‘consenting adults’ and are not really hurting anyone else etc etc.

If this relationship is OK, then all similar relationships (between adults) should be deemed normal and healthy, yes? If any father and daughter, mother and son, brother and sister, father and son, mother and daughter, sister and sister, brother and brother, provided they’re over the age of 18 want to get it on together and pretend to claim that it is done with consent, then HEY, what have we got to object to?

According to some folk, there is no objective reason why such unions are unhealthy, so therefore society should just rid itself of it’s puritan hangups and embrace these couples with open arms.

If it is indeed a ‘valid’ relationship, then to give my kids a full and comprehensive sex education, I should mention in discussion that incest is a perfectly legitimate lifestyle choice? :rolleyes:

Better willing than not. Better adults than not. Better that she grew up completely apart from him than not.

Given all those factors, I don’t see what’s so intensely revolting about it. They have a connection at the genetic level. Maybe not a brilliant idea to breed, but they have apparently done so a second time successfully.

And I find myself alarmed at your idea that consenting adults need to defend their relationship at all. (the fact that it is illegal aside, because any act’s legal status is a debate unto itself, and for me, the only reason incest should be illegal between CONSENTING ADULTS is because of the increased risk of birth defects…then again, should we make sex between any two people likely to produce children with birth defects illegal? Seems to me if that’s the reasoning, it has to apply to everyone or no one.)

It’s interesting you say “pretend to claim”. Because you find it so unbelievable, there must be coercion?

Again, in this situation and others like it, where the people involved did not interact in the usual roles, no I don’t see the problem. It may ick me or ick you, but a whole lot of things that certain people find acceptable ick other people out. So long as it’s consenting adults…ain’t my job to police other people’s choices. Nor yours.

To give your kids a full and comprehensive sex education, you should tell them all about sex, sexual health, sexual practices, sexual behavior, etc. the judgments you pass on those FACTS is up to you and isn’t really about your children’s sexual education as it is about their ethical, moral, philosophical education as it relates to the topic of sex.

Over 24 years ago, when I worked at a summer camp, we also had a cabin full of MI’s. Mentally impaired girls.

The first day of camp for this particular unit, I kept on seeing This Girl all over camp, moments from when I first saw her. There she is by the flagpole. Oh wait, she’s by the bathroom’s now. How did she get ahead of me? Wait a second, now she is in front of the cabin? God, that kid moves fast.
I wasn’t the only one who was having this mindfark.

Then, at dinner that night in the dining room, we saw the reason for our confusion.

Five girls who all were freaking carbon copies of each other, only varying in sizes, were sitting at a table. The oldest about 13 or 14. I have never seen such a family resemblence in my life ( outside of identical twins, which none of these were.) There was a sixth girl, too. The smallest. About 7 ( our minimum age to be a camper.)

Five of these girls were classified as retarded. ( I have no idea what exactly their situation was, I was 18-19 and not into getting closure on this kinda thing. They could have been autistic to a degree, as they didn’t look anything at all like a standard Down Syndrome kid.All I know is they were slow.) The youngest was not. Her parents kept on trying to have a normal child and kept on spawning children until one finally came out.
It was one of the strangest and saddest things I’ve ever seen.

You’re actually suggesting that it’s 60 Minutes responsibility to ensure they don’t do a story if the people being interviewed can’t be paid?

They’re an investigative program. They exist to collect and distribute information. The principals in this story are a father and daughter. That relationship exists to keep people from fuckingeach other.

I’m open to a lot of ‘do as you will’ philosophy. But if you’re willing to nail close relatives, you obviously no longer demonstrate the ability to make good judgements.

No, I was suggesting that perhaps one of the main reasons for the couple coming out publicly with their story was because of a promise by 60 Minutes to pay them, but that 60 Mintues would have known full-well that it is against the law to do so: thus, 60 Mintues get their sleazoid story and they don’t have to pay a cent. IOW, did 60 Minutes get the story under false-pretences?

60 Mintues in Australia is a very different program to (although initially modelled upon) the US version. Ours started off as a credible and noteworthy investigative program that spawned some terrific journalists and gained itself a reputation for its guts and class. Nowadays it’s nothing but a tabloid, vacuous hour of shitful television that is embarrassing to watch.
