Sort-of-hijack: Did you see The Daily Show yesterday? Jon Stewart said something about how this exemplifies the difficulty of reconciling public pronouncements about morality and private behavior, and basically went onto the next story. It was classy, although frankly I was hoping they’d have more fun with it.
Am I just out of touch, or did this story develop at a bizarre pace?
Maybe other people had been following this story for days, but the first I heard about the fact that the governor was missing was yesterday morning when CNN announced that his car had been found. Huh? I picked up almost marginally that his staff had been telling people he was hiking in the Appalachians, but it didn’t sound like anybody thought he was dead. The only thing I thought was curious was why people were making a big deal about it.
Later that morning, he was discovered in Atlanta, and it turned out he’d been in Buenos Aires. What the fuck? Was he a fugitive from justice? Dodging a subpoena? No, apparently just the fact that nobody knew where he was caused all the fuss.
Then by 2, it suddenly turned out he was confessing to an affair.
By 3 someone was taking over his position in the Republican Governor’s Association.
By five, his wife had announced that she’d been planning to leave him for two weeks.
By six, his secret love e-mails had been leaked.
That’s like a week’s worth of scandal reporting in one day.
This is the modern age. He’ll be rehabilitated by lunchtime.
Kind of reminds me of the early Simpsons episode where Lisa writes an essay outlining her corrupt Senator and witin minutes the Seantor is caught in a sting, ousted from the Senate and appears on the front page of the news.
At this rate, we’ll be watching the sex-tape by 5:00 this afternoon.
Maybe you will, but I have an entirely-too-sensitive gag reflex.
Well, he did say something along the lines of having republican values and a liberal dick.
As
[quoted in Salon]
(http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/), it seems that Rush Limbaugh has cracked the code on Sanford’s bizzare behavior. Obama drove him to it:
Are people actually going to believe this? The same republicans that scream like banshees about family values and the sanctity of marriage will now say it’s ok to have an affair because they’re sore losers?
But hey, this gives us permission to do anything we want! Let the looting begin!
It’s funny how often they do that.
A conservative mind but a liberal Penis.
I guess that’s also why Rush turned to drug abuse…
There was that joke going around when he was busted: “You see friends, this is just the sort of thing that Clinton’s do-whatever-feels-good degeneracy leads to.”
But, given his recent statement about Sanford, I suppose it’s possible he actually did blame Clinton for his drug abuse.
