Whuckfistle, I torment myself here because I find the need to be kind enough to atleast right back. Im sorry for not explaining this. My comprehenson skills are poor, my spelling (orally) are excellent, my writing (as in stories, poems) are as well superlative.
Monday won’t come soon enough!
You spell everything out orally? Man, it must take you forever to have a conversation.
Innocent bystander: Hi, fauxpas! How are you?
fauxpas: I A-M D-O-I-N-G V-E-R-Y W-E-L-L C-O-M-M-A T-H-A-N-K Y-O-U F-O-R Y-O-U-R C-O-N-C-E-R-N…
Innocent bystander: <dies of starvation>
Just because a WAG turned out to be correct doesn’t mean you can drag me into your world of incoherance. I am as much a cretin as the rest, if not by choice alone.
fauxpas many of us here used to be your age once and can relate to your youthful know-it-all, must always have the last word exuberance. Been there, done that, grew up.
That so many Dopers here are offering tidbits of personal advice, reflective assistance and (often spoken through clenched teeth) hospitality to you speaks well of many Dopers, their knowledges, experiences and maturities. That you still fail to grasp this is understandable for someone your age. You’ll grow out of it. Well, we hope so.
But your continued smartass comments belies an attitude too often seen these days. Nope, it’s beyond that “been there, done that” look at life. It’s an arrogant I’m-just-as-good-as-you-and-I’m-entitled attitude which permeates your posts.
The reality is that you are not as good as many here, probably could hold your own with others, and do have something to contribute. And before you get your hackles up, I say that about myself, too. (And I have had my come uppance as well, too.)
The sad reality is you are not entitled. Full stop. In some circles it’s called paying your dues. Others may see it as respect. You will receive from others what you offer to them in kind.
The Dopers here have provided you with a map. They have offered strong, but polite suggestions as to which routes offer the best scenic views, safest stretches and pointed out where caution is needed with some blind curves. You can choose to take the advice, ignore it, or even select your own route if you think you know better in a territory you’ve never been before.
Just remember that with winter here now if you choose your own route or drive too fast on the routes suggested to you, don’t expect anyone to look for you if you become overdue. We’ll wait until Spring when the snows have melted before we start looking for the wreck. And only after the bears have awakened from hibernation and satisfied their initial hunger pains with easy carrion.
I don`t know if I should shit, or go blind.
Duckster – That was awsome.
Fauxpas, what country are you from? If you are from a non-English speaking country, we may see where your (bad) spelling, grammar, and usage comes from. If you aren’t, and you plan on graduating high school, catch up on your writing skills. I’m only 15, you’re one year younger than I. While I’ll admit I may make an occasional error, it is fair to say my English skills are better than yours. I always was under the impression that my English (and language in general) skills were a weakness to me, but you put it all in perspective.
I can see where a lot of your 'tude comes from. A lot of teens are like that. Sometimes the idiot part of me comes out also. Just try to be nice to people, because chances are, they’re right! Most people on this board are in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s. They could be your parents and some, grandparents. Always remember everything you say can be looked up with the click of a button. Don’t post something if you know it is wrong, or you can’t back up.
What do I suggest you do? Lurk (read, don’t post). Try to act like everyone else. I lurked since I was younger than you even. Read every one of Cecil’s and Staff’s reports. Read real books, not programming books. I read a whole lot, and because of it, I think I’m smarter than most 15 year olds I know. Don’t read for trade (programming), read to get better at English.
If this thread (and it’s hundreds of responses) isn’t proof that your participation on this board is pissing a lot of people off, and that YOU are at fault, I don’t know what is.
Hell, if you want to stay on this board, I suggest getting a new account and not letting anyone know it’s you. And start fresh, with a new attitude. People will like you, and they won’t judge you by previous mistakes.
Splanky: The bit about the new account (assuming it’s at the same time as the current account is in effect) is a violation of the site’s TOS.
I cannot believe it took until I read Duckster’s post to remember this link
faux, if you haven’t noticed, that 6.13th of your life thing makes no more sense than any of your other gibberish.
And no.
So, you have no idea what an idiot savant is, is what you’re saying.
The only bit of idiot savant which applies to our little friend is the Idiot part.
The correct term for idiot savant is now autistic savant and if Idiot Boy thinks serenity is a common manifestation amongst people with autism, he needs to go and spend some time with people with autism. Humility is not all that common either. Me thinks Idiot Boy has watched a touch too much Rainman and has bought into the romanticising of a very difficult condition.
You know, I don’t think fauxpas is 13 or 14. I suspect he’s a precocious 10 or 11 year old who’s trying to pass himself off as being a kid close to high school age. For evidence I’d offer that he seems smart enough, yet doesn’t appear to have a junior high school education. He says he plans to graduate high school in grade 10 - not something a kid in Grade 8 or 9 would be likely to think. And he seems to have the emotional development of a very young kid.
Just a guess, anyway.
I have to disagree, Primaflora. Even watching Rainman over and over again wouldn’t be enough to end up with that definition. He would have had to find and watch an even more distorted depiction of an idiot savant/autistic savant.
I’ll second that. The same thought had occurred to me a while back. I think you’ve nailed it, Sam.
Well, he could very well be 13 or 14. His posts here show that he’s not all that smart, though.
Im only 14 and I have changed quite a bit ( i think more) and I accept all of your help and stuff you’re telling me and no my first language is Spanish not English…but like the regular idiot I am I barely have the slightest clue of the english language, I’m really sorry for not telling you this.
You’re doing it all wrong faux!
You’re supposed to coast through your education with minimal effort while banking on your assumed intelligence and inflated ego. Ignore everyone who tells you that you may not know everything, and pay attention to anyone that massages your ego by telling you that “You have so much potential”; and always remember “If you don’t try you never fail!”
Fauxpas, like others have said, lurk. I’ve been lurking for a long time, and it bulids a better understanding of what you can do and can’t.
And please, please brush up on your grammar and spelling.
All I have to say is…WOW!
Belittling a 13 and 14 year old is no way to go in life.
Kindness and content is far more important than spelling and grammar.
Isn’t Straight Dope a website for fighting ignorance? Or, is it really English 101?
Spelling and grammar is essential in human communication. However, it isn’t the only thing that matters…in contrary to popular belief on this board.
There’s a thread going on in IMHO about horrible experiences in gym class. By judging by some of the posts, some of you cannot shoot a hoop or hit a baseball/softball even if it depended on your life. That means you lack BASIC eye-hand coordination…something SOOOOO simple. Well, I guess a lack of bodily-kinesthetic intelligence indicates lack all other intelligences.
Putting fauxpas’ attitude aside. Perhaps he is dyslexic, dysgraphic, or have another disability (like me) that makes writing “coherent” posts difficult…but rather not go into it.
Good night.
