Everyone loves at least one Troma flick (and do mean flick) I mean who couldn’t great movies like Class of nuke’m high, Sgt Kabuki man NYPD, canibal the musical, and Class of nuke’m II. No one makes B-movies like Troma.
My fav is Toxic Avenger. I got the tox-Box with all 3 movies and some eps of the Toxic crusader cartoon.
BTW while troma my make cheap flicks their DVD production EXCELANT the DVDs for all 3 Toxic Avenger movies each have at least an hours worth of Extras
I’ve only seen one that I know of: Cannibal: The Musical which certainly has its moments! Expecially the “let’s build a snowman” song. LOL! I might watch that today!
Back in the mid-'80s I worked for an ad agency with a lot of Japanese clients. One of our clients wanted films to show in hotel rooms–and we accompanied them to Troma’s actual “headquarters,” which at the time was a third-floor walkup on 8th Avenue.
We sat down with the Troma principals and watched, as I remember, Surf Nazis Must Die! and Attack of the Confederate Cannibals. The clients sat very seriously and took notes, while the advertising VP and I tried desperately to look professional. All these years later, I remember Leroy’s Mamma pulling out a machine gun and yelling, “Eat some o’ Mamma’s home cookin’!”
I wanted to see their flicks so much, but they weren’t closed captioned. I once wrote them asking them to do that & got some really weird letter back from them from someone on some weird kind of drugs or something.
I have never seen the film “Sugar Cookies” but I believe it is cinematically noteworthy in its being the very first Troma film !
It seems this film is a drama (probably unique for Troma) about a woman (Mary Woronov) plotting revenge against a sleazy porno film director. It seems the director accidentally killed the woman’s lesbian lover while simulating a suicide scene. Well the plot sure seems “Troma-ish”. As far as my favorite Troma film - no question - the Toxic Avenger.
Another vote for Cannibal: the Musical. I often sing from it to young Whatsit Jr. as we’re out on a stroll. Come on, everybody together now!
The sky is blue, and all the leaves are green
My heart’s as big as a baked potato!
I think you know exactly what I mean
When I say it’s a shpedoinkal day!
I’d have to go with Terror Firmer, Lloyd Kaufman’s reflexive and self-referencing tribute to himself and Troma Studios.
Redneck Zombies is a sentimental fave as well.
And of course the immortal Toxic Avenger movies are essential viewing…well, part 1 and part 4 are, anyway. Parts 2 and 3 (originally one long movie that they whacked in half) really suck in a way that are embarrassing even for Troma.
P.S…one thing that truly annoys me about Troma is the fact that they constantly assume credit for the actual making of all of their releases.
Most of the “Troma” catalogue are independently produced movies whose distribution rights were acquired by Troma after they were completed and done. They then add their names as “executive producers” and always try to infer that the movie was of their own conceiving, when in fact they had nothing to do with the actual making of the films…they’re just putting them out under the Troma label.
Tromeo & Juliet gets my vote. There was not one person I knew who didn’t at least ONCE laugh their asses off at that one. Favourite scene = Tromeo whacking it to computer porn.
