FTR, Don Adams, in his later years, went Roman Catholic, supporting my belief that Reformed Jews and Catholics aren’t that far apart, if you spend more time eating Danish and drinking coffee than you do on theology.

FWIW, I was wrong – I had a dream a few nights ago about the Yiddisher chief and, he didn’t say, “take” – it might have been “got to walk,” or maybe “cop a walk,” but I don’t have time to put the sound through a processor to figure out exactly which. At any rate, I was wrong about that one.
Yes, comedy god, Yiddisher comedian, and Roman Catholic, Don Adams. Back in the day parents in Mixed Marriages had to commit to how the kids were raised. Don was raised Catholic.

The jokes where the humor is based on the attempts by a hetero-male to avoid showing non-hetero behaviors or non macho feelings might seem a little odd. I don’t know if we’ll (well, you, because I’ll be long dead) have to explain those jokes to 2074 audiences.
And he was originally meant to be Bart, but he kind of screwed himself out of that.
I have to say, even though Wilder and Pryor were in so much together, I have a hard time seeing Pryor as Bart. Cleavon Little just pulled it off so well.
Pryor probably would’ve been a great Bart, but it is hard to see anyone else than Cleavon Little now. He nailed it.

Watching Telefon again two nights ago (excellent late-late-night movie – it was about 4 am when I rolled over the machine) and I saw that squinty-eyed little bastard in one (I believe it was just one) scene. Had to watch through the credits to make sure. He had a good agent, or must have! Two great movies.

And I don’t know if the film’s writers got it wrong, but it should have been “Hast Du gesehen in deinem Leben??” Not seinen(m). Seinen (m) means “his”. “Deinem” means “your”. Don’t know the correct Yiddish, but what you’d like to say is: “Have you ever in your life seen (such as this)…”
Ihr Yiddische, please correct me if I’m wrong.

My take is that Brooks is of a generation which didn’t speak Yiddish but only heard some elders speak it – and if I know my Jews right, the old cats weren’t too busy teaching young kids some of that verkakte language. I agree that a lot of the language is not 100%, but just for “flavor.” Analogy might be the “old statesman of letters” Harold Bloom doesn’t know shit about Greek or even Latin or anything much besides “English,” but it doesn’t stop him from writing books about blah blah blah.
He does say “zeit nicht meshugge” – you can hear the stop, but he might have just had a cold or some allergies that day. Yiddish is an exacting language, with it’s own set of rules, not to mention not written in the Roman alphabet – I think it’s better to say that Brooks really didn’t know, and just amalgamated a little German with the way he heard some of his relatives speak.
