The first one I saw was “the Clonus Horror” at my sister’s house. I laughed so hard I hurt myself!
Hopefully the sci-fi channel will keep it in reruns for a while.
Jack Frost. My first episode ever seen, so it has sentimental value, plus the fact that Russian history is my major.
And of course, Boggy Creek 2: and the Legend Continues…
A Touch of Satan was pretty funny too.
Mike Nelson and Joel Hodgeson are soooo sexy…in fact, that’s why I’m co-prez and founder of the Mike/Joel Estrogen Brigade for us hormone-crazed MSTie chicks…
You mean The Horror of Party Beach? One of my faves too.
“Everbody do the Zommmbie stomp, do do do do…”
Oh geez, what a hard question…it’s my very favorite TV show, and I have over 70 episodes. (Not bad, considering that I live in Canada, and have never had direct access to Sci-Fi or Comedy Central.)
I’ll narrow it to my very favorite ten, in no particular order:
Manos has to be one of the next ones, as is Bride of the Monster (I think that was the title), and also the one where Lee Van Cleef befriends a pickle from outer space (don’t remember the name of the movie, but I do recall that a very pretty Beverly Garland played his wife).
Guinastasia, what was Jack Frost about? I liked Russian History (but don’t know as much as you do about it), but haven’t seen this one.
Probably my favorite moment in MST3K was when, in one of the films, they forgot to dub in a phone ringing and one of the actors has to make a totally lame imitation of the sound of a phone ringing.
I confess that I actually like the “shorts” more than the movies: The General Hospital ones, the one on “Cheating”, and two driving related ones (one was titled “Last Clear Chance”, don’t recall the name of the other).
Favorite MST3K skit is the easiest to answer. Definitely the Orville Redenbacher skit!!
I never saw it very often, but was always a bit surprised when they came up with something I hadn’t seen before. Jack Frost was definitely not the usual. My sisters and I were doing the MST3K thing from about 1962 to the present day. We always looked for the schlockiest movies on Saturday afternoons.
My favorite line from MST3K was during a scene from Black Scorpion. The giant scorpions have escaped from their underground cavern and derail a train. As they start chasing down the passengers and eating them, someone (I think it was Crow) shouts:[ul]“Don’t run! Just look unappetizing!”[/ul]Cracks me up just remembering it.
I’d probably choose “War of the Colossal Beast” as my all-time fave, partly for the “Mr. B Natural” short and partly because there are a bunch of cool lines in the actual movie.
But “Mitchell” and “Cave Dwellers” and “Fire Maidens of Outer Space” are all five-star eps…
Come to think of it, MST3K is like sex. Even when it’s bad, it’s still pretty good…
Keep in mind Sampo’s Theorem, however: “For every MSTie who thinks a particular episode is the worst work BBI has ever done, there is another who thinks it is their finest hour.”
This is a valuable little thread for me. I heard about MST3K on the internet and it appealed to me, and it turns out my cousin in Alabama is a big fan, so she told me some good episodes and I ordered a few videos from amazon.com, because I figure there’s zero chance of any of them ever been screened/released on video in Australia. I’ve got Mitchell, Pod People, and Shorts Volume Two.
The shorts one is probably my favourite, because I can show it to people who have no idea what MST3K is (which is pretty much everyone over here) and it’s still funny - I think the ‘host segments’ are a little weird if you’ve never seen or heard of it before. When I watched mitchell for the first time and there was the cheesy opening and the mad scientists and flimsy sets, I wondered if I’d made a terrible mistake.
So yes…keep the recommendations coming. Does anyone have the outtakes tape (‘Poopie!’) or the Shorts Volume One tape? They both had pretty good reviews on amazon.com, but I dunno if I’d enjoy an outtakes tape since I’ve only seen two real episodes of it.
The Final Sacrifice, I think. Though Space Mutinty,Jack Frost, and Puma Man all come very, very close. With Giant Spider Invasion, Hobgoblins and The Deadly Mantis coming up behind them.
Of the Joel era, proably The Cave Dwellers or Gunslingers, with an honorable mention for Manos and Mitchell. But I still haven’t seen most of the earlier episodes.
I think they tend to work the best when you get that perfect combination of pretention and cheesyness. And when they’re enjoying themselves. When they really really hate a movie (like, Invasion of the Neptune Men) they tend to be meaner, but less funny.
The best two back to back episodes were proably either Final Sacrifice and Touch of Satan, or Michell and The Brain that Wouldn’t Die.
Manos was actually the first episode I saw, at three in the morning, wondering what the hell this show was. God was that a bad movie.
I don’t own it, but I have seen the Shorts tape. It’s pretty good. The first one (an add for a women’s college is pretty weak, but the others are all hysterical. Especially “The Chicken of Tomorrow” and “Junior Rodio.”
Didn’t include my favorate short, though. The Truck Farmer. Though Coily the Spring Sprite was bizaare and disturbing enough to get the silver.
You know, “You must bring me the Sampo!” (What the hell is a sampo?). I have this one on tape. It reduces me to being unable to breathe, from laughing so hard.
In fact, because of this thread, I am inspired to watch it again when I get home this evening.
[singing] "Didn’t get the Sampo. Such a loser! [/singing]
