“When this judge let a rapist go because the woman had been wearing a miniskirt and so was ‘asking for it’ I thought, ladies, what we all should do is this: nest time we see an ugly guy on the street, shoot him. After all, he knew he was ugly when he left the house. He was asking for it.”
Ellen Cleghorn, 20th century American writer and comedian
“She sits on the iron throne
She is one and three
The dark lady the redgold lady
the blank lady oracle
of blood, she who must be
obeyed forever
Her glass wings are gone
She floats down the river
Singing her last song”
Margaret Atwood, Feminist Author, in Lady Oracle
“Increasingly, from the mid-nineteenth century the family becomes the last refuge of all those human qualities unable to survive in the outside world of capitalism”
Sheila Rowbotham, Marxist-Feminist Critic, in Women, Resistance and Revolution
“Foetus? No, you mean a parasite.”
Dr. Rota Lister, Feminist Scholar, in conversation
“A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a Smoke!”
I can recall reading a lecture by a prominent feminist where she referred to the “phallic microphones” in front of her. I’m wondering: what shape would women have chosen for the microphone, had they invented it?
I’m notorius for “swallowing the mic” whenever I sing with my band. Woulda made that a hell of a lot more interesting.
My favorite quote and bumper sticker:
“No gods, no masters.” – Margaret Sanger
