Favorite TV commercials from your childhood

I hanker for a hunk o’ cheese.

Seriously, though, who had a stack of round cheese slices sitting around?

The Big Fig Newton (here’s the tricky part).

I’d been holding back on participating in this thread because we didn’t get a TV until 1955 when I was 13, and the earlier TV I saw was on other people’s sets as early as 1951 or 1952.

However, if you’ll allow 13 as “childhood” I can mention some that only the true geezers will have a chance at remembering themselves.

Bardahl

A product (for cars) called B4, with a jingle, “You’ll be for B4 before you drive six city blocks.”

Brylcreem

Mohawk Carpet

Carling’s Black Label

See the USA in your Chevrolet (Dinah)

The Forward Look – Plymouth, Dodge, Desoto, Chrysler, Imperial – with the bodacious fins!

Amana appliances

Revlon

(I could go on but I’ll stop until some other geezer says, “Oh, yeah, that!”)

I was born in 1955, but I remember the Brylcream ads and “See the USA in your Chevrolet”, and heard about many of the others. Heck, with the wonder of videotape, I’ve seen many of these ads.

Even YouTube!

From the 50s:

“You’ll wonder where the yellow went.”

Speedy Alka-Seltzer.

“Brusha-brusha-brusha.”

“Ajax, the foaming cleanser.”

Ear worm city: “Once upon a time there was an engineer, Choo-Choo Charlie was his name we hear. He had an engine and he sure had fun, he used Good-n-Plenty candy to make his train run.”

This one, too: “Two all beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese pickles onions on a sesame seed bun!”

Doritos

Crash, bang, crack 'em up
Put 'em back again
Crash, bang, smash 'em up
It’s smash-up time, my friend

That reminded me of this one: Eat a vegabreadamilkacheeseabeanameatafruit!

There will always be a special place in my heart for the Eat 'n Park Christmas commercial where the tree bends over to pick up the star.

I want my maypo!!!

Charlie says, “love my Good 'n Plenty”
Charlie says, “really rings the bell”
Charlie says, “love my Good 'n Plenty”
They’re the [something-something] candy that I love so well!

shakes box horizontally

“The lime and lemon taste of Sprite joins your celebrations, the taste of limon mixes great on holiday occasions.”

The Stratego Game commercial with the dorky kids playing.

“People start pollution, people can stop it.”

I see Maypo next to the oatmeal in the stores and bought some last year, but unfortunately, it wasn’t so maple-ly any more. For $3.69 a box, I want my OLD Maypo.

Oh god, I wanted that so bad when I was a kid!

Had it! Hours of fun!

I thought it went “Bic Mac, McDLT, a quarter pounder with some cheese, Filet-o-Fish…” (unless I’m thinking of a different commercial). I remember them inserting a cardboard record of that song into the newspaper ads one Sunday. If you got the record in which the song played all the way through, you won a million dollars or something like that.

Ponch8 – there were variations on it, so you’re probably correct, too.

I remember one was an animated drink cup reciting the “Big Mac…” rhyme while snapping his fingers in rhythm. I seem to remember he ran through it twice, and after the second time, he ended: “And the cup ran away with the spoon. Yeaaaah!”

There was another one around the same time with girls jumping rope and reciting it in rhythm, except it went “Hamburger, Filet-o-Fish, cheeseburger, French fries…”

As for me…well, this wasn’t a favorite, but I remember some time in the late '70s – I was a little kid, maybe four or five years old – there was either a PSA or a commercial in rotation…darned if I can remember what it was for, but at the very end there was this really large hideous-looking face with a huge smile, and I think it was against a blue or black background…it was a puppet face, if I remember correctly, grinning and kind of half-rotating back and forth, know what I mean?? Man, I couldn’t look at that thing. I remember once I thought, “Okay, maybe I can look at it this time…” “WHOA!! No!!! Don’t look! Don’t look!”

That’s a really vague description, and I’ve tried tracking it down (yes, I’ve posted on fuzzymemories.tv about it, too)…

Are you sure it wasn’t Mr. Yuk?

Was it possibly this PSA?
