Favorite webcomic?

Hijinks Ensue

Every time I switch to a different computer, I find “new” webcomics bookmarked. Some from home, some from work, some on the wife’s laptop…

My current number 1 is Homestuck. You can find it here:

It’s weird, it’s puzzling, and it’s amazing.

I really enjoyed the PI story before homestruck. But I gave up on Homestruck about a year ago. It just stopped being funny and it really lost its edge as a parody of the genre.

One that hasn’t been mentioned yet:

Basic Instructions

Achewood

My enthusiasm has cooled a bit. Achewood recently returned from a long a hiatus, and I’m glad. But I really got a bit sour on Onstad when after he announced his hiatus, he still kept begging for his “tip jar” on his site, and moreover kept pushing his “premium update” site (monthly fee) on Assetbar even though he rarely updated it.

…and I’m not some sort of leeching deadbeat. I have purchased four Achewood books, two hoodies and one tee directly from the site. As well as being an Achewood Assetbar subscriber up until it shut down. So I feel justified in thinking, “Chris, this is bullshit. If you need a break, take it. You’ve earned it. But quit asking for money when you’re not publishing.”

But Achewood is still my favorite comic of all time after Calvin & Hobbes. So I’m thrilled it’s back, though it seems still to be on its “one update per month” schedule. Let’s hope it roars back in 2012.

It’s hard to pick out my favorites, per se, but Schlock Mercenary and Girl Genius both get bonus points for their regularity (I don’t think either has ever missed an update) and their ongoing stories (which xkcd lacks), so that bumps them to the top. Next would be Order of the Stick and xkcd.

After that, let me check my browser history…
Goblins: Life through their eyes
Erfworld
Darths and Droids
Piled Higher and Deeper
Full Frontal Nerdity
Oglaf

I also follow Nodwick and PS238, but I think those are primarily print comics, not webcomics (they show up on paper long before they make it online). And I’m also a fan of The Flying Cloud, though that’s more an illustrated text serial than a comic.

Many of my bookmarks have already been mentioned, including what is probably my favorite, Gunnerkrigg Court; but on the opposite end of the family-friendly spectrum is (often NSFW) Templar, AZ. Start from the beginning; it’s character driven and slow moving but worth it. Contains cussing, drug use, alcoholism, mental illness, dildos, full frontal nudity, legalized prostitution, religious freaks, anarchists, socialists and occasional extreme violence. (The most recent 10 pages have been BRUTAL, and according to the author/artist, are a major turning point for the main character. Shit just got real.)

This is why I’ve never lasted very long on “one-topic” message boards, like those for fans of a particular band - at some point, you’ve said everything you have to say.

I just found this fairly new webcomic, Two Guys and Guy, and I’m really enjoying it (it’s about two guys named Wayne and Frank, and a girl named Guy).

Out There has some of the most fascinating characters I’ve ever found in a webcomic (and the art really improves as it goes along).

Another favorite: Bug

Which is now up at its own site, rather than P&A’s.

JACK

Rated “M” due to language, violence, and sexual content.
Oh, btw, furries

My favourites are covered, but I’ll add

Freakangels - it is finished now, but is a great read from start to finish, and has awesome production values.

Order of the Stick
Order of the Stick
Order of the Stick
and don’t forget Order of the Stick

Also xkcd and Darths&Droids.

Gee thanks. I clicked the link this morning and had to spend the next few hours reading the entire thing. That was awesome

Actually, I remember reading the first handful of installments way back when it started, but dropped it for some reason. Probably because I don’t usually do well with weekly updates.

That’s the one I came into mention. It just about always cracks me up.

Here’s the start of the Gunnerkrigg Court series:

All the chapters are listed below the regular comic. It’s not humorous, mostly, but it’s got a tremendous story and stylish art. Here’s a partial cast list so you can see who’s involved.

The story starts when Antimony starts boarding schoo following the death of her mother. Gunnerkrigg Court is the school … among other things.

Okay, I have a question for y’all that are big fans of webcomics.

A loooooooong time ago, I remember reading the first 8 or so installments in a sic-fi webcomic that was sort of an allegory for the Iraq War. It wasn’t Shooting War; this was set in much farther in the future than that and the main characters were part of a squad of soldiers. I remember that the very main character was female.

Since it was a work in progress, I bookmarked it all those years ago, but somehow I lost the bookmark what with buying a couple of new machines in that time, and now this thread has reminded me of it and I’m kind of keen to see how it developed, if it’s still around.

I did some googling, but came up short. I looked through the list at TV Tropes and checked out a few links but didn’t see what I was looking for.

I remember that the comic got some press at one time, because that’s how I found out about it.

Anyone able to help me out?

Glad to assist the delinquency of a fellow doper

Beyond many of those mentioned, Girls With Slingshots.

Two of my favorite webcomics have been mentioned (Oots and Questionable Content) so I will just add Unshelved - it’s about a library.
