I think there is a parallel federal investigation into a whole umbrella “trying to subvert the 2020 election” which include J6, fake electors (including Georgia), pressuring election officials, pressuring Pence, etc. So they are investigating the same things GA is investigating in GA, along with a while lot of other related stuff.
FBI Search and Seizure at Trump's Mar-A-Lago Residence, August 8, 2022, Case Dismissed July 15, 2024
I did not know that. Thanks.
That is a good article. If there are any good lawyers left willing to represent him, I doubt he will serve any time.
I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I think it demonstrates well all the pitfalls Garland faces in bringing his indictments. Which isn’t a reason not to bring them, but these are all the scenarios he and his team must game out before they even start.
Fortunately, I think Garland is miles ahead of the Trump team in knowing how it’s going to all play out. And I disagree that Trump won’t serve any time.
We’ll just have to see.
I base my guess on general slipperiness, obfuscation tactics, the chance of sycophantic or sympathetic officials, reluctance to do something for the first time, political concerns and difficulties in unanimity - rather than actual knowledge or the triumph of hope. But as you say, time always tells. Given Trump’s age and the length of possible delays, this may also be a factor.
Everything is different this time, though.
Trump is no longer president, and as such, he’s lost protections as well as the ability to corruptly manipulate investigations from behind the scenes.
The courts are acting quickly when he attempts to stall proceedings, all the way up to and including the SCOTUS.
He has no Bill Barr or Rod Rosenstein running interference for him. He can barely find competent attorneys.
These investigations are well along, much of the work already done. And as a final cherry on top, Garland has assigned one of the finest, most respected and non-partisan lawyers available to us to focus like a laser on nothing except handling these cases. Rather than delaying proceedings, it should speed things up.
Mr. Smith has a reputation for moving quickly and thoroughly. He’s young and energetic, together with having 30 years of prosecutorial experience. I think he’s going to do a fabulous job.
I wouldn’t want to be in Trump’s shoes.
Those are good points but mine are too. There could still be sympathy or sycophancy without corruption, and ex-Presidents remain influential. The article you quoted shows some of the snafus. But as you say, this time is different. Five problems are worse than one, I feel bad for you son.
He’ll serve as much time as the bankers who drove the economy into the ditch in 2008 – none.
what happened to the appeal of the Special Master?
It’s been briefed. I think there is a hearing scheduled in early December.
Sound like a good sci-fi-fantasy title.
Oral arguments Tuesday.
In the event he serves time, will they be able to keep him off social media? Or deprive him of a phone? Or restrict visitors? No way that fucker is ever going to see the inside of a prison, although in a rational world the threat of the pen if he misbehaves would be there.
That’s sooner than I remembered. Thanks for looking it up.
It’s impossible to know, since we’ve never tried, convicted or sentenced a former president.
I can’t really see why someone serving time needs a Twitter account, but I’m not up on the types of privileges inmates have these days.
I guess we’ll see.
If the indictment doesn’t happen pretty soon, Trump will be President by the time the grindingly slow process advances to the trial stage.
It faded over the years. I hope he can cook!
I wonder if the DoJ feels any added pressure to indict before the new Congress is sworn in.
He was too reluctant with the oral*
*(arguments).
If it happened though, and he got elected anyway, that would be crazy, though the word does not seem strong enough to describe the degree.
