Fear the Walking Dead: 1.06 "The Good Man" (open spoilers)

If this were D&D, NtJ would be a thief. That must be what Strand sees in him. That, or he can teach everyone else how to behave desperately.

There doesn’t have to be any reason why Strand was locked up other than maybe he had a cold, or some other minor illness. That’s what the military was doing with the lock-up; locking up people who were ill and may possibly have had the superflu virus thing, or who might die of any cause and thus become walkers.

So maybe Strand had a cold. No other reason needed.

As for the ship - there’s no reason to assume that Strand owns the ship. Maybe he went to a party there once, maybe he just saw it and liked what he saw.

…oh, and what Strand saw in Nick - if, as I mentioned earlier, you’ve spent much time around actual heroin addicts, you’d know that they are very practical people. They’ve already faced the problem of doing evil and overcome it. There aren’t too many male junkies who aren’t criminals and who haven’t done things that are morally repugnant to decent folks like you and I.

The potential value of junkies is that they’re not going to freeze up and/or freak out when it’s time to do something nasty, because they’ve all already done plenty of antisocial shit. These are people who will steal pain medication from the suffering without a moment’s hesitation.

Thanks a lot. Now there’s coffee in my nose.

Speaking of Liza having to die because the actress is shooting the new season of OitNB, did anyone else catch that Daya was in the last cell as Strand, NtJ, and crew were leaving? We had to back it up to be certain, then we had a nice giggle over it.

Overall, I liked the season. I’m in for next year.

It would be interesting to see a moral quandary pop up between Travis (whose morals and beliefs are already gettin’ strained pretty heavy) and Nick (whose morals are almost nonexistent – I was genuinely surprised when he thought he was gonna die and he told his mother to run for it).

Moral strain was a BIG part of nearly every season of TWD – Rick vs. Shane, Shane vs. Dale, the group vs. Herschel, all the way up to The Group vs. The Alexandrians. Surely we’re gonna have SOMETHING like that in the new show… although I do wonder how they’re going to keep it from being TWD Mark II.

As do I, although from the criticism we’ve read, it seems as though they must make it similar to keep people watching it.

Well, there has to be a certain amount of similarity, sure. Which begs the question of exactly how similar will the show BE? Or will it simply be a filler thing, for when TWD is on hiatus?

As it is, I’m interested in seeing where the show goes, but I can also see where people will start tuning out in favor of other, fresher things (if you’ll pardon the pun) if this doesn’t become something with characters we care about, or who are at least interesting. This has been punched up tremendously by the TWD marathon running this week leading up to the season premiere on Sunday; the first two seasons had some vurra interesting characters, and some fascinating character conflicts and developments, all against a creepy background of zombie horror.

FTWD has had nearly none of that. Admittedly, it was a short first season, but still. Dull characters, a minimum of actual conflict, and nearly no zombies. Mainly, we’ve been set up with a rather bland and not too bright sitcom cast, all the way up to the last episode, where things got real and our cast hit the road. Sure, I want to see where it develops, but will it become a worthy adjunct to its parent show, or simply filler?

And who’s got the comic rights, I wonder?

(post shortened)

IIRC, On The Talking Dead aftershow, FTWD Executive producer Dave Erickson said it was Strand’s boat (Abigail (sp?)).

There is no reason to assume it is not his. He even named the ship as his destination while he was escaping with Nick.

It seem to clearly be his house judging by him being able to get in and all his clothes being in the master bedroom. Judging by the house, watch, and cufflinks, he has a lot of money. It actually does make a lot of sense to assume the ship is his given what they’ve showed us so far.

If it’s all misdirection and he isn’t rich, I’ll be annoyed.

I don’t think AMC is really interested in developing filler shows so I think they’ll be pitting pressure on FtWD to step up it’s game. I liked the last episode and didn’t have a big problem with the season as a whole but it’s no TWD. I kind of thought a spin-off seemed like a bad idea but when I saw how great Better Call Saul turned out, my hopes were higher. I’ll still tune in next year but I think the show is going to have to do a bit of an overhaul and stop patting itself on the back for the slow burn because in most of the slow parts, it really wasn’t burning an awful lot.

The producer or whomever said on Talking Dead that we was a wealthy con artist or crook of some sort.

…wul, nowadays that could describe any NUMBER of occupations…

Perhaps he is a Nigerian spammer.

I can see the great Gatsby leasing a yacht for a month.

If he was Nigerian, he’d have an accent it’d take a normal American several seconds to decipher. Trust me on this.

A rich crook, on the other hand… I dunno. Seems to me a guy with a knack for cold reading people and determining their intentions would be a durn handy fellow to have in the Zombie Apocalypse.

As long as you could trust him.

And there lies the rub.
