Well, with the new visitors, organize a bottleneck of some kind and lure the tourists over in small numbers and cull them in steady methodical fashion. Then the island is cleared, but for the occasional shipwreck zombie.

I don’t think any of them are at the point where they would feel comfortable taking on hundreds of zombies.

Seriously, that island looked like a pretty good deal, and clearing the island can’t be that much of a problem - send somebody out on a boat to the other end of the island and let them park 100 feet offshore and make a lot of noise. Many of the tourist zombies will wander out into the water and get swept away by the currents.
This ain’t rocket surgery, people. Chop-chop!
I don’t see it, it seemed like a pretty exposed place to me. I doubt you can grow much food in such a small island and there was no protection from any real threat, like the people going around sinking boats. The fences looked very flimsy, the place is just too wide open.
On reflection, I see your point. In the Walking Dead universe, the danger posed by the actual walking dead is fairly trivial. The inevitable encounters with the living who have gone completely psychotic for no apparent reason are the real threat.
I’ll also try to keep in mind that simple culling and defensive strategies are impossible (or if discovered, nobody has sufficient long-term memory to keep using them beyond the span of one episode) because the laws of physics and biology are also different from our own, apparently.
