Fear the Walking Dead series premiere tonight @ 9 (open spoilers

Only 4 more hours to go before Fear the Walking Dead’s 90 minute premiere. You can watch the opening scene at AMC. I’ve really been looking forward to this (though I still think the title is stupid). It’s a shame there’s no after show like Talking Dead though.

I suspect if it turns out to be anywhere near as popular as TWD, then FTWD will get an after-show next season.

I’m looking forward to the premiere. I have a love/hate attitude toward TWD. Sometimes it’s excellent and other times it’s idiotic. But one of the things I was most disappointed with about the beginning of TWD is how it skipped over the outbreak. To me, the outbreak is the most compelling part of this kind of story. I want to see society crumble. In the show–not for real.

I can’t wait to see it, or to see society (on the show) fall apart. That plays into a lot of what drives the characters, so it’ll be interesting to see the development from that point forward.

It looks so far as if this show will be like the original. I know it’s only part way through the first episode, but I need at least one character to like and I’m not getting that. Yet.

Very slow start.

I like the change of pace so far. It’s not as slow as the original.

It’s about as compelling as TWD for me. Interesting to see how it’ll destroy civilization, and deplete the population. This is where most of everybody’s loved ones will die. After the initial outbreak this will happen less and less, like in TWD.

I really liked (can’t say I loved) the premier. But it seems they’re still making logical errors that don’t make sense. Something outbreaks like this, there’s going to be at least one, if not a few vectors and hot-zones. This shit happens fast, and we know everybody on Earth is already infected from the first season of TWD. And yet, there’s hardly ANY news of outbreaks and such on television? Just pockets of conspiracies that something’s going on on the internet and one viral video? Please. Look what happens when a case of ebola shows up in the US. The next day, after the expressway incident, the principal of the school is all like, “What’s going on here? Where is everybody?” An incident like that would be HUGE international news. Does he live under a rock?

Yet, still… hope to see this family transform in the upcoming hell they’re about to go through.

A little slow. I like the shots of an unglamorous Los Angeles.

They said that the authorities had suppressed the news video of the incident (either officially or unofficially) leaving everyone to guess at what happened on top of the bridge. The cell phone video was leaked to the internet and most people believed it to be a fake.

Still, though, you think the authorities would have closed schools and imposed a curfew or taken other measures. I would have like to have seen more media coverage of the “virus” that was spreading; maybe a word or two explaining it. I realize that the drug houses would be outside the view of most of the public but others are dying in hospitals. Maybe the virus only started with needle sharing? I wish they would explain that a bit more.

I gave it a “meh” because, like Baker, I haven’t seen a character that I can root for yet.

When the promos started running a few months ago I noticed that the kid kinda looked like Johnny Depp. As much as I tried to ignore it, it was like watching a psychopathic version of Benny and Joon.

Agreed, but this we’re getting a very different perspective than in the parent show. We know civilization collapsed very fast in TWD (even faster than in the Living Dead films), and based the previews we’re going to the breakdown of public order and all utilities by the send if the season (& I think it’s only 3-4 weeks story time covered). Los Angeles is sure to turn into a complete death trap by then; I imagine the main characters will be hit the road by season 2.

Then break down in the road, and find a bucolic farmhouse somewhere in northern California while they search for their lost daughter.

Yeh, he totally reminded me of a younger Depp too.

Pretty much what I expected. A slow start to establish the characters, the setting and the mood. Not bad. I like that they left us with our main characters confronting the reality of a Walker. I’m in for at least a few more episodes, and expect the pace to pick up from here.

Thinking about how quickly a metropolitan area could be overwhelmed I googled a few numbers for some back-of-the-napkin estimates:

US Population: ~318 million
Deaths per year: ~2.5 million
Greater LA metro area population: ~18 million

If it mirrors the national average, that’s around 140,000 deaths in the greater LA metro area each year. Which works out to roughly 380 new zombies every day.

Granted most of those deaths are the old and the very young, but still. An old zombie is the same as a zombified 30-year-old.

That’s zombies from natural causes.

Since the zombies will kill some people themselves, and panic a few more, the number of new ones will go up steadily each day.

It seemed as if all the adults on the show live under a rock. The ER physicians at least should’ve freakin’ noticed something, given how quickly people are turning.

However, the principal and the two adult main characters mention the flu and getting a flu shot frequently, so I think this is being played in the media as “a bad flu”.

I’d like to start a dead pool on the family.

Also, that principal won’t be around long. Some kid is going to eat him for sure.

I’m in as well. I liked it.

As others mentioned, I also thought the kid looked like a young Depp.

Also deaths (and then zombies) from them old Darwinian blues – people who die from stuff that would have just been an ER visit or Dr. visit in the world before. Appendicitis, broken leg, asthma attack, tetanus. And then the stuff that happened because the world ended, like a generator inside the house/apartment.

Yep, agreed that we’re very quickly going to outpace the normal death rate, and by a good margin. I was just thinking about how it starts.

I enjoyed the show! I plan on sticking with the series to see how all this zombie madness plays out in the big bad city.
