Febrantary (February Minirants)

Keeps the sausage bits stuck together better. Lecithin is more common in liquid-ish foods where consumers might turn up their noses if it looked like the food had separated.

No.

<pulls out soapbox>

The reality is that corn and soy are both subsidized to the hilt in the USA. That means that everything has one or both.

You see, we actually have more of these items than we need so we find creative uses for them. Since it’s so cheap, the companies producing the items get more money.

I actually made a concerted effort to not buy products with artificially added corn or soy (so popcorn is okay as are soy nuts, etc.) and I couldn’t do it without doubling my grocery budget and having to do hours of extra food prep each week. (Having to make my own ketchup was not cool.)

We need to stop subsidizing this crap and start subsidizing other things (or not subsidizing at all since it’s mostly a handful of big agricompanies getting the money anyway).

One of our customers is in the business of making ‘corn products.’ (HFCS, etc.) They spend over a billion dollars every year lobbying (read: bribing) the US government. And the still make a ridiculous profit due to subsidies.

Bwah!

Where I live I can get plain non-fat or low-fat Mountain High yoghurt in my local King Soopers (Kroger) store. The ingredients are milk, pectin and lactobacillus cultures. I suspect if you look you can find some local brand like that wherever you are. I’m surprised it’s such a problem for Nava though, I thought people in Europe generally paid more attention to what they eat, so the companies could get away with less.

And I’m about to go off today for another session of scoring college placement test essays, many of which would make you weep just as hard as you are now. The number of incoming college students that we have to place into REMEDIAL reading, writing, and math classes is increasing all the time. The only bright spot is that we get paid over 40 bucks an hour to read and score this crap. Otherwise, I wouldn’t do it. A while back, some Adminiflake complained that the number of students we place directly into English Comp. ought to be higher. And there’s the rub: what “ought to be” and “what is” are two very different things.

Some sad news. I thought people in this thread would like to know if they haven’t found out already.

Lynn Bodoni has passed away.

I know she had many friends here. There is a thread in ATMB for those who wish to send their condolences.

She will be greatly missed and her death is a tragic loss to the Straight Dope.

Somewhere recently I saw the comment that, “In the last 100 years, we have gone from teaching Latin and Greek in high school to teaching remedial English in college.”

The Piccolo Player
(as told to me by my father…apologies for the coarse language)

Before a Sunday church service, the preacher makes an announcement. “As a result of continued illness from the chicken salad served at Wednesday night’s meeting, none of our choir members are present today. All musical selections will be performed by the music teacher from the local school.” The service proceeds; for the first music selection, the music teacher plays a tune on his piccolo. As he finishes, the congregation is silent, with the exception of a lone voice from the back:

“Piccolo player’s a motherfucker.”

The preacher immediately leaps to his feet. “How dare anyone utter such language in the House of the Lord! I want the man who said that hateful thing to come forward immediately!”

No one moves.

The preacher is exasperated. “I cannot believe this good, Christian congregation would have such people in it! I want the man who is sitting beside the man who uttered that filth to come forward!”

No one moves.

The preacher is flailing at this point. “This is unbelievable! Is this congregation in the hands of the devil??? Is there not one decent person left among you?? Could the man who is sitting beside the man, who is sitting beside the man who called the piccolo player such a vile name see fit to come forward?”

A man in one of the back pews finally stands. “Preacher,” he begins, “I’m not the man who called your piccolo player a motherfucker.” He continues, “Preacher, I’m not the man who is sitting beside the man who called your piccolo player a motherfucker. Preacher, I’m not even the man who is sitting beside the man who is sitting beside the man who called your piccolo player a motherfucker.”

“Preacher, what I want to know is, who called that motherfucker a piccolo player?”

I’ve been considering a return to college, and have been somewhat offended at the insistence on “assessments”. I get it now. :frowning: At least someone will be relieved to grade mine.

 finally googled and read about serotonin syndrome

My daughter is tired. I don’t really have a problem with her being tired per se, but the only other time she’s ever complained of being tired was when she woke up in the middle of the night and promptly began vomiting like she was a cast member in The Exorcist. Plus, her preschool teacher apparently came down with one of those lovely fast-incubating stomach viruses and threw up at work (in the bathroom) yesterday.

I hope the girl is just legitimately tired - she did wake up at 5 a.m. this morning to tell me her legs were feeling good (she’s 4 - any excuse to get out of bed will do). So perhaps she just never went back to sleep after I put her back in. I give it another 3-5 hours. Because the vomiting usually starts just as I’m turning off the light to sleep.

Soy has been “sold” as supermegahealthy, though, and people buy the notion. I keep having people tell me to try soy milk because it’s SOOOOO healthy: first, soy sensitivity; second, in Spanish it shouldn’t be called leche (which by definition comes from a tit) but horchata, since its organoleptic properties, its production process and its nutritive value match horchata rather than animal milk. But the box says “leche” so they think it’s a nutritive match for cow milk only “so much healthier!”; many people who perhaps should be moving to lactofree and who would never drink milk by itself are moving to soy milk because “it’s so healthy!”. I still haven’t met one who could refute the horchata bit or tell me exactly in which ways is soy milk supposed to be healthy.

Oh, and the lactofree! We’re getting soooo many products labeled lactofree which again have to always be so by definition and legal regulation. But hey, it sells with the people who have lactose sensitivity and know nothing of food composition, which is a lot of people. It’s the same thing as all those “bio” yoghurts with “active bifidus”: it if doesn’t have active bifidus it does not meet the legal definition of yoghurt!

People pay attention to what they eat, yes, but they also very often have very little notion of what is actually healthy or what is supposed to be in food. Propaganda works here same as anywhere else.

I can find soy-free things, but it requires reading every label and I don’t trust the makers enough to keep from reading it again the next time. If I found a brand of yoghurt or ice cream which didn’t have lecithin, next time I’ll start by reading that one’s label, but I’ll still read it because I don’t trust them to stay with the soy-free process.

And holy fuck on Lynn :frowning:

Yes, this is my issue too.

So I was reading an article yesterday about how after the current “break” from the harsh weather, it’s gonna get bad in New England again next week. What motherfucking break? I got sent home twice this week because of the foot of snow and horrible road conditions we got between Tuesday morning and last night, and this is a break??? I hate weathermen almost as much as snow.

Mother nature isn’t a poster here, so I’m going to come right out and say that she should eat a bag of dicks then die in a fire.

I <3 YOU too! Turn it up!

Not tubas.

Roads south and southwest of the Twin Cities are shut down. Thunder snow. White out conditions, with wind gusts around 45mph. Power outages all over (ours has been flickering).

Make it syphilitic dicks and the fire be a slow pit roast.

Was teaching til 9 pm, so just saw this, and it took my breath away. I guess I thought some posters (esp. mods!) would always be here.

So, quick, before anyone else goes, THANK YOU ALL for posting here!

I took the post down. It was filled with comments by crazy, stupid people accusing me of being someone who condones the murder of gay kids and wanting to turn kids into mindless corporate drones. I’m not going to provide a platform for lunatics to bully me.

The crazy was knee deep. All I ask is that we make sure that kids demonstrate they can read, write and do math at a 12th grade level to an outside source before getting a high school diploma. Apparently that makes me the fucking anti-Christ. And those fuckers wonder why no one values a high school diploma anymore. Really. I don’t give a shit about the nurse’s personal traumas. I give a shit that the nurse can do her damned job. And so does the nursing degree program and the hospital she hopes will hire her when she graduates. Your personal traumas are yours to work on out your own or with the help of qualified professionals. They are not a fucking pass thorough life to get whatever the hell you want with no effort and a patronizing pat on the back from everyone else.

AMEN, HALLELUIAH, CHUNKY PEANUT BUTTER (without corn or soy).

The river and I had a good cry for her today :frowning:

We owe on our taxes this year. This makes me very sad. I’m pregnant and due April 1st. I feel a little like the world is conspiring against me, but that may just be the hormones. Now I am not mad to pay taxes but I feel stupid for not compensating last September when Husband got a much better job. I should have realized at that point that we would need to adjust our withholdings but I was, admittedly, a bit preoccupied. I wish it didn’t feel like I had to guess and pray during the year and hope I come out ahead.

I have installed on my home computer every flash-blocking program known to man, so videos don’t autoplay. I’m now on a school computer, and I forgot that videos on websites can sometimes auto-play. :frowning: A video started playing really loudly when I went to a website :frowning: Now everyone at school knows I was fooling around on the computer. Shit shit shit shitty shitty shit shit shit shit.

(I’m finished my work. I’m not fooling around instead of doing work.)
