Well, i’m less than enthralled with your over defensive knee-jerk reaction to my observation. As someone that’s grown up in the U.S. as a person of color (asian american male) i’ve seen these things up close and personal. I doubt any white person would truly understand the stereotyping and implications race relations has on gender equality within racial boundaries.

From my experiences, the American media has gone to great lengths to portray asian women as sexual wallflowers out to be exploited by white american males. Look at the evidence before you speak. Look at all the racially denigrating asian porn with racist titles available in the U.S. Almost all of it has some kind of racial angle to it. Look at the different movies that portray asian women as nothing else but scrap heap proxy white women. Even the characters played by Lucy Liu et al are usually nothing but exotic stand ins for white women.

This is exactly what i’m talking about. The stereotype that asian women are “lesser” or “traditional” or “tamed.” This often held viewpoint that asian women are less progressive in society and just sit around waiting all day for a man to liberate them. To be honest, unless you got a mail order bride (which it sounds like you did) most asian-american women are nowhere as “traditional” as you claim.

I have to also point out that this heavy racial stereotyping of asians seems to be a commonly held AMERICAN phenomenon. Like I said before I spent a great deal of time in western europe (and some time in eastern) and the asian stereotyping was far less. My theory on this is there’s still a lot of latent animosity towards asians (especially asian males) in american society due to the many wars America has fought with asian nations.

Connie Chung: Reporter talking head who emphasizes her “american” qualities. She refuses to have anything to do with anyone from the asian-american community. She has repeatedly denied she’s an asian person. She’s married to a jewish-american male Maury Povich. She’s essentially an acceptable asian archetype to the white mainstream because she’s non threatening and known as “that reporter woman.” I’ve noticed that one of the many “acceptable” careers asians can have in the white American mainstream is reporter, kung fu master, chef, or liquor store owner.

Lucy Liu: Played a highly stereotyped sexual wallflower on Ally Mcbeal. When she’s not taking roles like that she’s in movies like Charlie’s angels trying to be a white woman. She’s also known for her dragonlady roles. All in all she does nothing for asians except exacerbate known stereotyping.

Lisa Ling: She was one of the reporters (notice a trend here?) on The View. She was in a series of commercials by Old Navy that had her flauting herself as …drum roll a sexual wallflower! To her credit she is dating actor Rick Yune so she hasn’t completely sold out yet.

Never did I say that asian women have to fit into any particular “archetype” or refuse to date outside race. My problem is that the specific roles America has defined for asian women is in fact falling into a stereotype itself. The stereotype that it’s perfectly fine to be ashamed of your ethnicity and to embrace white America as your adopted identity. It’s not simply adopting America, but if you notice many of these asian women emulate white people in a desperate attempt to switch identities and become accepted by the white mainstream . This is troubling for many reasons because it’s just another Uncle Tom impersonation but the 21st century version of it.

This just proves your an asshole too.

I never said any person should act a certain way however there is something called “selling out” where you go to increasingly great lengths to deny your own ancestry in order to emulate a white person for their entertainment. It’s as low and denigrating as the steppin fetchit sideshow carnivals they used to have for black people. Except it’s more modernized these days instead of a tap dancing black man you have token “orientals” in roles designed to cater to a white audience. What I meant by that comment regarding Lisa Ling and Ricky Yune was that at least she had some type of connection in the asian community and didn’t forsake that in order to make a career. Maybe I should have selected my words more carefully but so many asian actresses try to remake themselves as “white” friendly or white women to endear themselves to a mainstream audience. That includes not being seen with other asians etc… to form that image. It’s all part of the colonialist oppressor role where you try to remake yourself as the oppressor in order to fit in.

I guess you have problems with reading, go back and highlight where I said that dating outside the asian racial group was frowned upon by me? Btw, there’s nothing with taking non asian first names. Frankly, I prefer it since asian names usually get butchered when anglocized. It’s simpler if you happen to live in the U.S. to do things that way.

It’s ironic that everyone attacks that one quote because I think everyone knows what I mean. The fact is it’s like this with any “minority” person who becomes famous. There’s a certain attitude that’s it’s acceptable and actually encouraged to “trade up” in society by becoming more white. This means marrying into the white upper/middle class and pretending to be white. All the while putting their own culture on a backburner or refusing to be seen around people of your own ethnicity at all. This is done to make the minority look more palatable and not “too ethnic” amongst the white mainstream.

This is a common complaint with prominent blacks too when they “change” themselves to look more white. I remember blacks complaining about OJ Simpson (back before he killed nicole) because he remade his image to become more palatable for white people. This includes marrying into the white middle/upper class (nicole) and pretending to be something you aren’t.

This is what “selling out” is. It’s not just simply dating outside your own race it’s remaking yourself in a white person’s image so you’re accepted. It’s mimicking the colonialist, kind of like how when the irish were oppressed when they first came to America. They started mimicking the behavior and actions of the WASP society at the time. Soon there was a seamless transition where there wasn’t a difference between irish/wasp society at all.

You’re right I didn’t read your OP now that i’ve brought it back to your attention why don’t you quote the supposedly “racist” comments i’ve made? It’s funny i’ve been asking at least proof of what i’ve said that’s so offensive for quite a few posts now but noone has stepped up to the challenge. Maybe you’re not but I think quite a few people are. There’s a certain attitude that asians have no right to complain about anything in society. Stereotypically meek etc… then when that boundary is broken people get nervous. Just like when blacks used to be treated like little children until they started revolting en masse. A white guy can make a dozen posts about how foreigners are this and that and generalize with about a million stereotypes and noone will make a peep. Where have I stated that white Americans are all out to get me? I did mention a few times that it seems much of the prejudice i’ve experienced has originated from mostly whites in the U.S. How would that be patently false? Whites make up the majority of the population so it’s entirely believable that most of the racism i’ve experienced has come from that direction. If you interpret that as some kind of tin foil hat paranoia towards all white people then obviously you misread it. Or maybe you’re inserting your own arguments from out of context quotes you keep insisting on using to ham it up for the forum.

It has happened before in random threads i’ll be reading in SD. I remember reading something really offensive to asians but was told to “lighten up” when I brought it up in a thread awhile back.
