So help me, this is what I was coming in to post, only it predated your occurrence by about 20 years and happened in California at Montaña de Oro State Park:
I was working as a paralegal at the county Public Defenders’ Office when they were assigned to represent the defendant in this case. The Sheriff’s Office wasn’t even sure what charges they could make stick, and I honestly don’t remember what crime(s) they finally charged the guy with. I do remember the most jaw dropping detail was that the defendant had… packed a lunch.
The lawyers in our office were fighting over who would get to represent him. We, the staff, were laid out on the floor with laughter, as they practiced their proposed closing arguments.
Of course someone came up with alternative lyrics to the song, Under the Boardwalk.
The incident earned itself a spot on Paul Harvey’s The Rest of the Story. (Some of you will remember that radio show, I’m sure.)
The guy disappointed us all by accepting a plea deal. But the case lives on in fond memory among certain of my former peers.
