feminist topic (with the topic of abortion making a special guest appearance)
I don’t like abortion, in fact I hate it. The problem is, it’s logical. You can’t stop people from having sex before they can deal with a child. I know I wouldn’t want a parent or parents that didn’t want me but was forced to have me. Adoption isn’t always as easy as it seems, since there are kids put up at the age of, say… 10, and are still waiting. Many people who have an abortion can’t afford a baby. I get along with po-lifers better than pro-choicers. I think the whole “feminist” argument, (as far as abortion goes), is bull seeing that it’s not only the female’s body, but the babies, (don’t like it… don’t have sex… it’s your body). I KNOW if I were a woman, (or if men got pregnant), I would take responsibility and not use my organs as an excuse, I know a lot of women who do to (excluding rape victims). This feminist stuff isn’t going in the right direction (not contributed by ALL feminists)… first off, I’m SICK of watching commercial where a man and a woman are competing in something and… SURPRISE, the woman wins, (you just KNOW the person behind commercials like that is some big fat conservitve man knowing what he has to do to sell a product). I hear “Girl Power” all the damn time. In most of TV sitcoms, men are morons, and their women bail them out: “Simpsons”, “Everybody Loves Raymond”, Even The Cosby Show… all good shows, but when am I going to see another “I Love Lucy”? I see T-shirts that say “Men Lie” or “Men Cheat” bumper stickers that say the same… Hell, women even have their own section in the book store! They have their own TV station (Lifetime), and what woman that you know of want’s to be associated with old made-for-TV movies and reruns of Unsolved Mysteries?? I also think same sex relationships are more excepted for women than men. Two women kissing on a magizien cover, it’s “hot”, two men…“ewww”. Just remember, when I complain about these things, I’m not complaining to women… just everyone involved. Now don’t get me wrong, I think women have a long way to go in order to be considered equal, but the key word is “equal”. People are taking advantage of the women’s movement and making money off of it… I think equal pay is something we should shoot for here. Like I said before… not all feminists are to blame… I think a lot of people claim to be feminist, but don’t know what it is. The REAL established feminists, I think, have a better idea of what’s going on.
I think kids have it worst than anyone… smaller boys might think they are “bad”, or “goofy” when they see these things. When I was in my pree teens, I would see women on TV TRASH men. My mother has friends over… TRASHING MEN. My father does all the cooking and cleaning and he works… !? I took it to heart, and I don’t want my kids to. Whether It’s men bashing women, or women bashing men.
Guinastasia, you’re my new hero. Between this and your response to Vinnie in his DUI checkpoint thread, I’m starting to really dig your posting style. Minimalist, but meaningful.
:goes off to add a name in the Unrequited Crushes thread:
Now I remember why I hate stream of consciousness writing.
Are you trying to braindump the lump sum of your entire knowledge on these topics? I really wish I still had a floppy drive, it’s a shame to waste a whole zip disk or CD.
first of all, you can’t say there’s nothing to what I said. Set aside the fact that I’m not great at expressing ideas and opinions
Second, I didn’t break using paragraphs… It’s a post!? I didn’t know I was going to be graded. Get used to spelling errors too, I’m a dyslexic fool… and wont spellcheck for the likes of people who grade people who post on the topic board.
roving aimless post (with special guest appearance by inanity)
I don’t like these pit threads that don’t make any fucking logical points…problem is they’re logical kind of…but i’m sure SOME people READ them because the think they HAVE to…or something… …but i really don’t like to read them because they take up too much of my time which is one thing that i really don’t have at all in the day you know because i have other stuff i HAVE to do you KNOW…like randomly grow concerned about bumper stickers…or tv shows like “The Simpsons” “The Family Guy” and “The Charlie Rose Show” which i’ve never really understood anyway… i two think their shood bee a “hot” tv channel just for men…maybe if we can ever have some male-only magazines first…but right now there’s just stuff like “cosmopolitan” and that oprah magazine, and the mary kate and ashley olson magazine…not that i think women or anyone else for that matter is bad it’s just that i want to create the most incomprehensible social commentary ever
Scooter, Potsie just called, and he wants you to meet him and Ralph down at Arnold’s. Maybe the three of you can discuss your deep thoughts on feminism there.
But mind, you deserve to be kicked in the ankles repeatedly, as you have been.
Abortion. The argument that it is woman’s body is not “bull,” but rather obvious. The woman is a fully-developed independent human being with rights, including the right to autonomy and self-determination. The embryo is a collection of cells that represents a potential future human, and the argument is that the rights of a potential future human should not outweigh the rights of human already out in the world and walking around. You don’t have to agree with this, but it has been done to death around here. Do a Great Debates seach on “abortion” if this is your topic of choice.
Women besting men in commercials. A citation or example would be nice, since otherwise it’s not at all clear what you are complaining about.
You hear “Girl Power” all the damn time. So what?
TV sitcom views of men. There is, I think, at least an argument to be made that sitcoms perpetuate the “bumbling guy” stereotype. Of course, there is as much of an argument to be made that they perpetuate the “dumb woman” stereotype (Allie McBeal; Phoebe Boufay; Edith Bunker). There is also an argument to be made that, overall, men are still portrayed very positively in TV – as the pivotal figure in almost every drama and as the hero in almost every action flick.
Hell, women even have their own section in the book store! So what?
They have their own TV station. So what?
I also think same sex relationships are more excepted for women than men. I think you mean “accepted.” Do you have anything to back up the idea that lesbianism is more accepted than gayness (gayism? gaydom?)?
People are taking advantage of the women’s movement and making money off of it. Who? And how?
Smaller boys might think they are “bad”, or “goofy” when they see these things. Another possibly valid argument – in fact, a book came out in the last couple of years about how the modern feminist movement (or the more radical version thereof) is dangerous for boys because it makes them think being male is a bad thing. (Can’t remember the name of the book at the moment, cudgel my brains though I may.) But again, you’ll have to flesh this out if you want anyone to take you seriously.
So, y’know, pick a topic. You’ve got like twelve going on here. And your points don’t really lead anywhere – hence all the “so what’s.” Focus is good. Paragraph breaks are good. It’s all about coherency.
