I’d argue the real Maine is worse. It’s dreadfully boring in most of the state.
In fact, anywhere on Bas Lag
The world before it was post apocalyptic didn’t sound so bad, though. I want a rakunk! And butterflies with trippy wings and to wreak havoc with nature.
You know - not for nothing, but I’d vote for the Mayor in any term prior to the one in which he planned to Ascend. He’s got a bad record on supernatural crime, I’ll grant you, but I don’t see anything in the series to suggest he’s anything less than competent with regard to conventional law enforcement. Moreover, his commitment to education seems unimpeachable - Sunnydale High looks like an extremely well-designed and maintained high school, with top-notch facilities. Obviously, we can’t see its test scores, but I don’t recall any point in the series where it was suggested that Sunnydale High was a struggling institutions. (Other than the unusually high mortality rate).
My only real gripe with the Mayor is my suspicion that he’s misappropriated municipal funds to finance the Ascension. And I could be convinced that this is nonsense - corruption of this sort does seem rather beneath the man.

Hold on a second - this is a dystopia that explicitly relies upon random violence and death to maintain itself, and you suggest that a series of terrorist acts would improve matters? Good lord, man, I can’t think of anything better-calculated to serve the Party’s interests. It could use me as an excuse for further crackdowns, I’d eventually be caught, tortured, tried and killed, and no good would come of it at all.
Push come to shove, I can imagine trading my life for a dear enough price. But I won’t throw it away in some damned romantic gesture.
Eh - unless you’re that one kid, you’re okay.
