Field of Dreams-I gotta know!

Okay, folks.
This is my first thread, but I’ve decided that there’s finally something I need to know enough to ask all of you fine folks?
Who the heck is “The Voice” in the movie Field of Dreams?
I used a search engine and wasn’t particularly satisfied, and the credits say that, well, the Voice plays “himself.”
So, who is it? Ray Liotta? God himself? (Gee, I wonder how much she asked for to do that…phewwwwwwwww!)
Would appreciate help from the teeming, although wonderous, millions.
Thanks!

I couldn’t find it either. IMDb has it listed under “Crazy Credits”, but nothing under the “Full Cast and Crew” category.

I suggest walking through an Iowa cornfield until you hear the voice and ask, “Who are you really?”

Let us know what you find out.

I don’t remember if the Voice in Field of Dreams is the voice I’m thinking of, but in Hollywood circles, “The Voice” refers to Don LaFontane, the dude who does the voiceover on 99% of movie previews.

I don’t know about ‘Field of Dreams,’ specifically, but a good rule of thumb for unidentified voices in movies is to consider the director first. (I’m blanking on the director of FoD right now…sorry). Consider the following:

“Jaws” - Steven Spielberg is rumored to be the voice of the Coast Guard gentleman who radios the Orca with a message for Chief Brody. (I recently watched the DVD and it certainly sounds like Speilberg!)

“Full Metal Jacket” - Kubrick allegedly dubbed his own voice over a soldier shouting for a medic. I just read this somewhere today, in fact. I wish I could remember the particular scene and character…

“Jackie Brown” - Listen closely and you’ll hear Quentin Tarantino on an answering machine.

“The Producers” - It’s obviously Mel Brooks singing some of the lines during ‘Springtime For Hitler.’

. . . the director or Deborah “E.T.” Winger.

Being from Iowa I can tell you for sure that if you are walking through a Iowa cornfield trying to hear voices the first one you will hear will be your own saying “where the hell am I”

Phil Alden Robinson directed “Field of Dreams”. If you get him drunk, I’m sure he’ll tell you.

I always thought that “himself” referred to Ray Kinsella [Kevin Costner’s character]. Remember at the end of the movie Ray says to Shoeless Joe, “It was you,” and S.J. replies, “No, Ray…you”–I don’t think I’ve quoted it precisely but that’s the gist–?

If correct, do I know what that’s supposed to mean? Nope.

Ok, for the sake of knowledge I just found out for you. I went walking around in an Iowa corn field and waited to hear a voice. justwannano is correct in that the first voice I heard was my own saying, “Where the hell am I?”
But just then I heard, “Hey you! Get your ass outta my corn!!” I looked around but I could see nothing but corn. Again, “I said get your ass off my property!! I gotta shotgun!!”
“Oh yeah? Who the hell are you?” I asked.
“Billy Ray. And this here’s my corn. If you dont get your city ass off my land, I’m gonna start blastin.”

I started running as fast as I could. This voice was really pissed. But it looks like we have our answer. The voice in the corn field is Billy Ray. Or, at least it was in this corn field.

but you were obviously in an Arkansas corn field.

Had it been an Iowa corn field, the voice would have belonged to Dub or Luther or Red or somebody. The only "Billy Ray"s in Iowa are recent immigrants.

Well, uhh… thanks guys. That helps. 282 people and nobody knows. Drat. Drat on dat.
I appreciate your cornfield searching for me, though

I think I can help.

I was recently in Dyersville, Iowa - where they filmed Field of Dreams, and where the baseball field still stands. They have little exhibits set up around the field giving little tidbits about the movie. There’s a few paragraphs on “The Voice”.

It goes over the various phrases that are said during the movie, and what they mean. They then talk about how “The Voice” is listed in the credits as “himself”. It then says that only the director knows who “The Voice” is, and that he’s not telling.

Actually, now that I think about it, I really CAN’T help.
